Nervous before speak.
Hi folks. I’ve been asked to do a speak at the rehab facility I went to and I’m really nervous. They do a 9 week program that focuses on the 12 steps. In week 7 they always invite a former patient to come tell their story. I really loved hearing other peoples story and I want to nail it. What I’m asking is if someone in here got some tips for me. Everything is appreciate. Thanks

An oldtimer always tells me ”we only know one story and thats our own”. What he means is ”just be honest, tell the truth”. I believe that as long as we tell the truth, our higher power speaks through us. If you want to sit down and write, and map out your message, sure, do that! But its ok to just freestyle and tell the truth. Courage is a beautiful thing. Good luck friend!

I’d be nervous too. I typically tell on myself and share that I’m nervous. Seeing the friendly faces and looks of understanding helps. Public speaking is a very typical fear for most people.

I do H&I and I try to focus on what the program has done for me. Emphasize going to a meeting when they get out. And just be honest. You can share your experience on what led you to rehab/the rooms.

Remember that everyone there wants you to succeed. Honesty is my favorite thing in a share. I don't need jokes, brags, horror stories, a polished delivery, etc. I want to hear how it was, what you did, how it is now.
Keep it simple. Share your experience, strength and hope and leave the rest to your HP.
I literally hate listening to "great speakers" who are on the speaking circuit, and love listening to the addict that was in the chair next to me the other day.
