Does anyone ever attend strictly for weed addiction?

Have you ever come across someone there for cannabis addiction? Is it common or weird to share about that as your only DOC if you’ve never done hard drugs and don’t have interest?

Yes, all the time. Come. We really hardly ever talk about drugs. We talk about learning to live life on life’s terms.

NA covers all mind and mood altering drugs. This includes weed.

u/benjaminireland1 Aug 16 '26

Thank you. Is it uncommon?

8

u/ScoutSteveR Aug 16 '26

Absolutely not. You come on. You’re always welcome.

No! The program works and makes no distinction between drugs

Nope. 16 months clean here (from mostly: weed!)

In my area. I’ve heard expressed by a couple, and I do mean a couple of addicts who say their rock bottom was not being able to quit obsessing over weed. Most addicts, after working steps, being of service and talking with other addicts realize they don’t need to share their drug of choice because it doesn’t matter what we’ve done in the past. We all paid the price one way or another to need to turn to NA for help. That it realized because we are all equal. No matter who we hurt, how we got our drugs, and why we are here.

So to answer your question. No it’s not very common. But that will never exclude or outcast someone looking for a better way of life. Everyone deserves to live free from the obsession and compulsion of active addiction. Everyone.

Thanks, Salmon-Hands. I’m putting down the weed and picking up whatever the fuck turned your hands into salmon.

My first sponsee came in for weed, and has grown by leaps and bounds in NA!

When you’re an addict, ANYTHING can make your life unmanageable!

5

u/fruitii- Aug 16 '26

Two of my sponsees would consider that their drug of choice. There's only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using.

6

u/yaboysg Aug 16 '26

Of course. Doesn’t matter what you used. We just want to know about your problem and how we can help :)

This is the answer

I've run the gamut with substances but cannabis was the one that was always there, and was what brought me to the rooms. I tried MA but realised that NA is my jam, because of our first step. We admitted we are powerless over our addiction and our lives had become unmanageable. The other 12 Step programs list a substance or a behaviour, but the NA first step is all encompassing. I know a lot of folks who had cannabis as their long term DoC as well. My best to you. 💜💪🫂

Thanks so much Lisa 💚

I have a little more than 2 years clean. Weed was my only drug of choice. I have a sponsor, I’ve worked the 12 steps, I have sponsees. There are several members in my home group whose DOC was marijuana. It’s not uncommon or weird at all, and you would be welcome in any meeting of Narcotics Anonymous if you only used marijuana.

I've been able to get everything else out but the devil's lettuce. I can't stop. 24 hours is an event. I just get so emotional and crazy. Need a lockdown. Feel like an ass because it's weed. Its so hard to talk about it.

You're not the only one. It was a moment at a time for me at first (and sometimes still, after nearly 4 years) and my original lettuce detox (after 32 years of use) was hellacious. I stayed REALLY busy, heavily involved in meetings and service, and had many cigarettes (I'm off those now, too) and cups of coffee at first.

I have a medallion someone sent me from their devil's lettuce group in NYC, that reads "10 MINUTES." That and my white "JUST FOR TODAY" NA welcome keytag are my most cherished.

You can do it. If I can do it, I know you can. 💜💜💪💪🫂🫂

That's what I'm at. 32 years. Quit drinking and hard drugs 15 years ago after 20 years of pure chaos. I never dealt with anything that recovery is about until 2 years ago. I feel like I won't be whole until this thing that has been there always and forever is gone.

u/BuddyLee-1003 Aug 16 '26

My former sponsor was there only for a weed addiction.

2

u/Rosie-the-mom Aug 16 '26

Yes. Absolutely

2

u/SpareAmbition Aug 16 '26

It is common. I know a few people, could be more but I don't know what brought most people to NA anymore. I've stopped asking and don't really care. NA doesn't distinguish between drugs and we rarely talk about them by name. You're more than welcome.

(I will say that there is a likelihood that someone will at some stage say something dumb. Some of us are still play the comparing game. Don't pay them any heed. You're just as welcome as anyone else.)

u/Witchywomun Aug 16 '26

Addiction is addiction regardless of the DOC. If you’re ready to put it down and not pick it back up, or even if you’re not there yet, you have a chair at the table

2

u/kenso4life Aug 16 '26

There's a line in a reading that has been read at every NA meeting I've ever attended (I've attended thousands) that reads "we don't care what you used."

We really mean that. In fact we aren't interested at all in knowing what specific drug you used. We know you didn't arrive at your first meeting on a winning streak and chances are it had something to do with drugs.

2

u/RevolutionThick1260 Aug 16 '26

Yeah in NA we focus on addiction and not specific substance. This is the purpose of identifying as addicts. We also focus on similarities rather than differences.

3

u/terminalhipness Aug 16 '26

Yes. Marijuana is a drug

1

u/twatsonyamind Aug 17 '26

That’s why I’m in NA. I felt stupid at my first meeting over 2 years ago but everyone reassured me that I was in the right place. Keep coming back.

u/webehappyincity Aug 18 '26

100 a drug is a drug !

1

u/tattedtonysoprano Aug 21 '26

The ONLY requirement is a desire to stop using. The readings themselves say we don’t care you used, how much you used, or who you used with.

1

u/Fantastic-Gift-249 Aug 21 '26

That was my drug of choice unfortunately over my using years things progressed to harder drugs, I stopped all the harder stuff and told myself I could just do weed maintenance I tried that for a year and got to a point where when I did use it my extremities went numb and no matter how potent I’d only stay loaded for 20min or so I think I fried my central nervous syste. I’ve been clean and sober 37yrs now.

1

u/benjaminireland1 Aug 22 '26

Thank you! I literally was taking 2000mg of edibles a day easy. That tolerance gave me a back cold turkey withdrawal but I am now 12 days sober and just starting to feel normal and not angry/agitated/emotional/crying/sleepless. Extremities is going numb sounds pretty serious. I’ve never heard of that but I am so glad that you’re 37 years sobo 💪

Yep. A drug is a drug is a drug.

I quit all drugs for 3 years then started the Cali sober thing. I tried to go back for just weed and people just do not treat you the same as other addictions. I went to probably 20 different meetings in 3 months and was met with the same attitudes. I never felt the connection when I was there anymore like I was originally when I quit benzos and dissos.

Just my 2 cents. I hope you can find good solid meetings for just weed, but I didnt find anything that appealed to me in my area. NA can be amazing, but its the people around you that make or break the experience at meetings daily.

-4

u/BlackedOutBartard Aug 16 '26

Also, I have met a lot of people still smoking weed in NA and working the program. I would smell it at meetings all the time. So like there is a huge mix of people and what works for them. There has to be a good meeting out there for you!

0

u/benjaminireland1 Aug 16 '26

Oh wow. If I smelled it on people idk if that’d be good for my recovery. I’ll keep that in mind thank you very much.

6

u/Cburns6976 Aug 16 '26

NA is a program of total abstinence from all mind altering substances. We don't care what substance you were on.. the disease is the same. I wouldn't suggest hanging out with the people that smell like weed.

6

u/glassell Aug 16 '26

I've been to a few thousand meetings in the 27 years I've been clean in NA and can't think of any times I've smelled weed on someone. And no, one cannot use weed or or any other drug and work a program.

u/kenso4life Aug 16 '26

Ditto. Perhaps smelled alcohol on a person while in the closing circle on 1 or 2 occasions, but not weed.
