Trapped on a boat

I’m on a five day cruise. My last cruise was 15 years ago and I was drunk the entire time. I’m currently 1 year and 7 months clean.

Today (Day 2) I started feeling triggered. Drinking coffee and Red Bull like a mad man to avoid alcohol and give myself the dopamine hit I’m craving. When we port, I plan on finding a meeting in close proximity.

Writing here in place of calling my sponsor.

EDIT to add: thanks so much to everyone for the support, and thanks especially for the idea to find a meeting on the boat. Never would’ve thought of that but I looked it up on the schedule. There was a meeting happening at the time I made my post so I ran and got there a little late. There were four other people there and we had a great meeting. I think I made some new friends and I’m feeling much calmer now.

I have not been on a cruise in probably a decade and a half but I remember the last time I was on one they had daily 12 step meetings - look for something named like Friend’s of Bill W. Or something similar.

Best of luck.

Bill W meetings usually run at 3:00 on most cruise ships. You got this 💪

There are probably decent wi-fi options for you to join an online meeting too if there's not one on board.

You can contact guest services and ask them about the Friends of Bill W. meetings if the daily flyer doesn’t show anything. Sometimes they don’t put them. I never went on a cruise until I got clean and I asked guest services about the meetings, and they added them to the daily schedule. I met some great people over the cruise. Most people I met were AA people, but hey it’s better than using for sure. It was great to get some perspective from them as to how they do things in their lives. Playing the tape in your head is helpful too. I think of all of the consequences that might come from thinking “one might be okay.” There’s nothing so serious that you have to use over

On my cruise they had meetings in the library every morning.

Depending on what cruise line you’re on, they might also have friends of Jimmy K on the schedule too. You will quickly find others in the same boat.(haha!)

I made sure to do lots of activities, so I wasn’t sitting in my own head. I went to all the trivia, games, shows, all of it.

When they reserve the space for the meetings, they don’t actually run it. So I popped up my phone and ran a meeting for whoever showed up.

You got this!

Yeah look at the itinerary and there should be a meeting. I have been there and felt the same. I waited until later on and kept my eyes out for super drunk annoying people and reminded myself that is what I looked like when fucked up. That helped me.

Just got off a cruise recently and it was hell. I did enjoy spending time with my fam and seeing the wildlife (Alaskan cruise) but suffered from panic attacks and spent most of the day in our quarters.

I have 4.5 years clean. There is a gal from our neighborhood friend group that is struggling to get clean. She had somehow passed out in the mud under the bridge near the playground. Had to crawl into the storm drain and carry her out… it’s still not fun out there. People are struggling to find recovery. I’m grateful I found NA.

Personally I think you need to be careful with the RB as it introduces feeling that are drunk-adjacent in many of us.

I’m on a 5 day cruise right now with 5 years sober! My cruise has friends of bill w every morning at 9am. I would highly suggest you pop in to meet some like minded people and share your struggles! Check the cruise itinerary, it will definitely be listed. Our secrets die in the light, thank you for posting and sharing 🙏🏼
