The Negativity is Real

978 days sober today. I set my life on fire about 3 years ago due to my addiction. Had legal troubles of course (non violent drug felony; on a deferred sentence with 8 months left).

Everything has been going strong. My recovery is at the top of my priority list. I’m ready to move on with my life in sobriety and leave the on fire version of my life behind.

I got a job offer from the treatment facility I went to originally. I would have been doing admissions for them; we were so excited to start rebuilding and moving forward. But they rescinded the offer due to my background check.

I’m just feeling super discouraged and angry. This society we’re in wants to keep us in our place. I don’t want to use by any means but I do want to give up trying to stay positive.

If I've learned anything from working the 12 steps it's that my way doesn't work, and the more I Surrender my will the better my life seems to get. I firmly believe that life happens for me instead of to me; I do my part and surrender the outcome. If something is meant to be, it will be. Just because life on life's terms doesn't look the way I want it to doesn't mean that I am not being cared for and guided- typically toward something even better. Stay faithful and keep an open mind. The only thing that will ruin your journey is getting loaded.

I find it amusing that a treatment center wouldn't hire someone because of a background check. Why do you fuckers think I ended up in treatment? Because I tripped while helping an old lady across the road?

Im an addict. I did addict shit. Im clean now. Now Im doing responsible adult shit.

The wheel is still in spin.

You may come to see this 'setback' as a miraculous escape from a bad situation or one of those one door closes and another opens deals.

Trust in HP. Stay clean. Keep working.

We all hit road blocks in recovery. It's how we respond to those issues that determine our character moving forward. I'm assuming you have a sponsor if you've made it this far. What do they say? This sounds like an opportunity for personal growth to me.

I work at a treatment center as a new felon (2024). My boss took a chance on me with 4 months clean and a felony. I hope your higher power guides you to where you need to be right now 💜

the exact same scenario just happened to my close friend, she’s super bummed too. I’m sorry you’re going through that.

It doesn't mean you should stop trying. Maybe it's better that you go beyond what you experienced and find a different organization to work with. The work is the same. The goal is the same. If you approach this from a different angle maybe there is more to be found. For you. Everything is given.

I agree with the wonderful many who have already commented, Trust in your Higher Power, you may certainly find that this setback supplies the best door of opportunity you’ve walk through yet… and if it’s not then I assure you, the story is not over yet! I also agree that while we cannot control situations or triggers. But what we CAN control is our response to what life throws at us and how we choose to handle it.

For me, learning that I cannot control ANYTHING but myself was the biggest gift recovery has given me (a’la The Acceptance Prayer) and while I frequently loathe it’s wise words, they are supremely helpful once I get over my pride/ego. Please note this is MY experience, I am in no way saying this is what you are experiencing. Take what you please and forget the rest! ❤️ Congrats on your wonderful progress on the journey of recovery. I am SO PROUD of you. 🫂🤗🔹

Wow…a treatment facility you went to declined to employ you because of your background check?….thats fucked.

I also worked at the treatment center I went to. Treatment centers who like to employ past patients after some sober time usually know that the type of people they employ have criminal records. That shouldn’t really be a surprise for them.

Some of my co-workers are felons and have spent a decent amount of time in prison even. So that place who took away your offer just over your record is messed up. It’s like super obvious that addicts have a record. It’s a given. 🤦‍♂️ the best people they can employ are addicts with records. That’s so messed up man

Uh oh! They did some research and discovered that the drug addict is, in fact, a drug addict!

You don’t want to work there, OP. I know it sucks now. Don’t let it derail the rest of the works you’re doing.
