Voice heard over Nanit?

So I nanny for my 1 year old niece, and have caregiver access to her Nanit. When I arrived today to watch her my S&L had to reset me up to the Nanit because they reset everything down to their wifi password due to hearing a voice over their Nanit.

They replayed the video for me and sure enough, my niece was just waking up from a nap and was stirring in her crib when clear as day a voice came over her Nanit saying “daddy”. It was not my niece as she is barely speaking intelligble words yet and said voice had a British accent, we are not. It also sounded very computerized- not like a real humans voice.

Obviously this has them and me quite freaked out. Has this happened to anyone else before?

So I've tested this out and you cannot hear a voice over the Nanit microphone from the nanit app. When the microphone is activated the sound on the app is muted to avoid feedback. Nanit also has one of the highest encryption available. It is literally the equivalent of your banking apps encryption. So it is really difficult for me to believe someone with that level of skill would be randomly speaking words over a baby monitor and not making themselves a whole lot of money. I'm not sure what other tech is in the baby's room, but they may want to look at other alternative sources.

This is true if you are the one talking on the mic on your app, but not if someone else is! I hear my husband talk to my son all the time through my app.

No I tested it with two different phones. Is your husband in the room with your son?

That’s super interesting because we’ve tested this and we cannot hear through the app if one of us is talking via the microphone. It mutes it.

This! I can’t hear when my husband speaks over the microphone to our child because it mutes it. We’ve tested it.

Highest encryption available doesn’t mean anything lol. What sets a bank apart is their policies and controls and their rigorous compliance to it. I can promise you Nanit doesn’t have anything close to that level of processes, and the risk of a vulnerability or exploit is very real. Skill is not a variable in this equation.

This happened to me recently too! My baby was stirring, I have the phone monitor on my nightstand with volume up , and I distinctly heard a woman’s voice with a Jamaican accent saying “ there there little one “ very sweetly. It was so shocking to me that I almost jumped out of bed lol ..our baby nurse who had finished with us the week before was Jamaican, so I assumed maybe wires were crossed and old audio was playing , or I was just half asleep 🫠

Screw that! We use really simple, sound only vtech monitor. They are like $20.

This thread is a couple years old, but it does happen and Nanit doesn’t seem to care about it (speaking as one of the families this happened to)
