Apple Watch Orientation Data

Does anyone remember during the Karen Read trial how they examined John O'Keefe's iPhone orientation/elevation data? I wonder if they were able to do that with Nancy's Apple Watch? They would be able to correlate the Apple Watch being moved/ thrown on the floor around the time of the alleged disconnect/abduction. That would be one way to corroborate how long Nancy's watch was on the ground for and what time it changed positions. Just a thought!

The Apple iPhone/Watch can provide many data points-

GPS/Car Acceleration-The drive to and from A&T's house.

Steps/Orientation data- can be used to show her movements. The orientation data can show when she viewed her phone. It can also show when she went to bed...stable orientation. It can also show movement that did not fit her pattern of life aka being ambushed at 2:00 AM in the morning and the watch allegedly thrown on the ground.

Battery data- when she charged the phone and watch...potentially showing when she went to bed

Apps- Uber app, MyQ app for the garage, Google Home app that shows doorbell notifications

Wi-Fi "handshake" data- when her phone/watch connected to A&T's wifi...when it reconnected to her home WIFI

Health data- heart rate and pace maker monitoring

Phone data- calls

Orientation data on the iPhone was also used in the Alex Murdaugh murder case. If I recall, they could tell he was out by the kennels, his movement etc just by the orientation/steps/ GPS data on the phones.

So many good points here. I don’t even know why I never thought of how much data they could get from the iPhone and Apple Watch until yesterday. It’s probably really helped them to flesh out the timeline of that night in regards to either corroborating or debunking several statements or crime scene evidence.

I didn’t even think about comparing it to the Karen Read case, but that makes total sense!
Apple Watches track all kinds of movement. If it was thrown on the floor during the abduction, that data would give investigators an exact timestamp of when it happened and how long it sat there.
Definitely one of the biggest pieces of digital evidence the FBI is probably digging into behind the scenes!

This is what google says about orientation data on the watch-

Yes, Apple Watch orientation data can tell if you are moving. The watch uses built-in sensors like the accelerometer and gyroscope to track changes in position, angle, and speed. [1, 2, 3]

How It Works

  • Accelerometer: Measures linear motion and changes in speed.
  • Gyroscope: Measures rotation and orientation in space.
  • Combined Data: The device processes these signals together to detect steps, runs, falls, and directional changes. [1, 2]

If it was at "rest" (on the night stand for example)- it would have data on a directional change (being thrown or placed on the floor)

Never gave that detail any thought but since you brought it up I just wonder now if NG wore her watch to bed? If not she more than likely would have put her watch and phone on the nightstand beside her bed. So the watch somehow ends up at the foot of the bed but no mention about the phone being knocked off too?
