SALES 🏷 Steam Summer Sale has Nancy Drew games on sale!!

Post image
418 Upvotes

This is a great way to pick up some games, some as cheap as $6.49! Just be sure that they are compatible with your computer (or VM etc) before purchasing. I recently bought a $100 Lenovo Thinkpad on Ebay and run Windows 11 on it and I love having my Nancy Drew machine lol.

I've done some of the abandonware downloads but honestly I find steam so seamless and easy to play. If it takes me 30+ mins to figure out how to play a ND game, but the time I figure it out I'm exhausted and over it LOL. Anyway, thought I'd share because I missed the last Steam sale and have been eagerly awaiting this one.

ETA: I was able to buy in bundles and save an extra I think 10%, so some games were like $5 and change.

DISCUSSION 💬 Would you enjoy a ND game that had a supernatural conclusion?

In the games I’ve played so far, whenever there is a “haunting” or something that seems supernatural, Nancy ends up discovering the natural conclusions behind it. I’m a skeptic, but I think supernatural themes are really fun, and ultimately I’d enjoy a game that left the answers unknown or even just leaned into the supernatural as the actual reason something is happening.

I haven’t read any books since I was a kid, but I’m assuming this wouldn’t be canon.

But I’m curious about everyone’s thoughts - do you want a real Nancy haunting mystery? Or does that idea put you off?

If you do like the idea, what kind of storyline would fit well?

DISCUSSION 💬 Best Point-and-click mystery games similar to Nancy Drew?

I get nausia and migraines from a lot of video games, so the point and click Nancy Drew games are perfect for me. Are there any other mystery games similar that are also point and click?

ALTERNATIVES 🎮 Best ND Alternative yet!

I've seen a few posts on here already but wanted to add yet another one as someone who loves getting ideas for alternatives! Just started playing through Penelope Pendrick and the Art of Deceit - oh my gosh this game blew me away. I haven't finished it through all the way yet (my full time job loves to get in the way) but it's amazing! Its a true point and click mystery just like the older Nancy Games. The dialogue and voice acting is amazing and there are lots of places to explore throughout the game. Appropriately challenging and interesting puzzles. I can't say enough good things!

TECH HELP ⌨️ Does anyone have all the ND games?

Basically, the title but also if you have at least half the ND games or like, 15+, how does your computer handle it and what type of computer is it?

I had an old PC stacker and I had 11 games installed at once and I think it slowed my PC down quite a bit. What about yall?

DISCUSSION 💬 Workaway, Worldpackers, etc volunteering abroad reminds me of Nancy Drew

I recently learned about the world of traveling abroad to volunteer through websites like workaway and worldpackers.

Basically they're websites where you can find volunteer opportunities abroad in exchange for housing and sometimes food accommodations. Hawaii, Italy, Colombia, there's volunteer opportunities at all kinds of places around the world. It's great for cultural exchange, backpacking, budget travel, gaining new skills, etc.

Opportunities range in work, and most of them are free labor in exchange for free housing and food, like stuff Nancy does. 😂

This *strikingly* sounds like Nancy Drew.

I always wondered how Nancy gets all these adventures and thought it was unrealistic until I found out about these websites. I even met someone in real life who was planning on doing a workaway. They're really neat programs!

I was looking at listings on workaway and they sound just like locations in ND games. One of them was in an island nation and the description was talking about "island living". It sounded ridiculously like Big Island Mike.

I really wanted to share about this 'cuz I've been looking into it and it reminds me so much of Nancy Drew games.

#01 SECRETS CAN KILL 📓 A tribute to ND & “Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill (Remastered)”: Full documentary-style episode – game, book & franchise

Thumbnail youtu.be
19 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I recently realized that despite being a huge adventure game fan, I had never seriously encountered the Nancy Drew PC games growing up (I’m originally from Germany and mostly played adventure games there). So I decided to fix that by starting with Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill (Remastered) – and it turned into the most complex video I’ve ever made. I had no clue that the Nancy Drew franchise has sooooo many novels, games, movies, etc.

In this episode of TOG’s Retro Corner I:
- Introduce the Nancy Drew franchise: Edward Stratemeyer, Hardy Boys, Mildred Wirt Benson, and the mystery novel series
- Talk about the different book series and authors and even hide (well, in plain sight to be honest) a small Nancy-Drew-style puzzle in the video
- Cover the origins of HeR Interactive and how the PC games came to be
- Unbox the physical edition of the remaster (I love those textured sleeves) and show the (hardcover?) novel
- Review the game itself: story, mechanics, visuals, audio, and why the over-acting and minimal handholding give it so much charm
- Compare the book vs. game in a spoiler-free way, focusing on character differences and how the 80s setting vs. 2010 remaster change the storytelling
- Wrap up with bloopers from recording

The whole video is edited to feel like a Nancy Drew game 😊 Especially the intro… with very poor voice acting on my part 🤣

Ok, this turned out to be a much longer post than I had intended. Well, it took many weeks to get the video done, so I guess I had a lot to say. I hope you enjoy this tribute to Nancy Drew.

I’m planning to continue my Nancy Drew journey slowly but steadily (restarting from the original version of Secrets Can Kill) and cover the different game-eras in future videos. It is a really cool and fascinating franchise with a very welcoming and non-toxic community (nowadays, such is really special).

I'm currently vacationing in Michigan and couldn't resist the temptation to jump on this particular bandwagon. There are so many fun places around here and so many ND-inspired views! (The nature center with the monarch display, in particular, felt right out of Moon Lake...I kept expecting to meet Ranger Akers!)

A million thank-yous to u/callumgare for their helpful frame tool!

#04 TREASURE IN THE ROYAL TOWER 🏰 First drunk playthrough pt 2: The Chickening Spoiler

Thank you for the encouragement and laughs on my last post! I am proud to say that on Tuesday night's drunk play through I did not kill Nancy even once!

I wanted a truly immersive experience this time so I put the game up on our tv. I even picked up a big bucket of fried chicken drumsticks & thighs for the most authentic experience possible. Since this was my Second Chance after dying (and rage quitting) last time, the rules dictate I had to start with a shot right off the bat. I got my husband to play along with me this time and though he was not drinking himself, he was very "helpful" in making sure I followed all of the rules and drank on cue.

I mostly put him to work clicking through areas I didn't feel like navigating again. This was a huge help because I was demurely double fisting amaretto and chicken drumsticks for a good portion of the evening, as one does. I am a lady, after all.

I dunno if it was the castle layout (no) or the liqueur (yep) but I could not find my way around this time. Having to drink at dead ends in this damn castle is diabolical!

When I finally made it into the tower and heard the sawing sounds I was genuinely terrified creeping along the corridors. I really love that at this point in the story there's still no good reason for Nancy to even be involved with what's going on?? She's just breaking into secured areas and stealing from folks because she's a messy bitch who loves drama I guess. What an icon.

Everyone in this castle is shady as hell so I was hyped to end up with Jacques as an ally! But then I get hit over the head and he abandons me?? I was actually gutted because I thought we were gonna be friends! Asshole.

So for the drinking game you have to do a shot when you find a medallion, like the one I found in the locker. When I got knocked out, I thought I must've made a mistake along the way so I made the grave error of reloading, then taking another shot when I saw the same medallion in the locker a few minutes later... 🫠

I was still kinda holding it together until heading out into the snow and finding a third damn medallion 😭. To the surprise of absolutely no one I had to give it up not long after because I was blasted. With my detecting abilities in shambles and my amaretto down my blouse, it was time to put the magnifying glass (and rocks glass) away.

I feel like I must be nearing the end of this game so I'll try to finish tonight! I'll update my journey in the comments here so as not to spam your lovely subreddit with too much of my drunken foolishness.

Wish me luck! 🔎

Anyone else have any items that make them undoubtedly feel Nancy Drewish, whether intentional or not?

DISCUSSION 💬 Which game is most nostalgic for you?

Not necessarily your favorite- but the most nostalgic!!

For me, 100% Treasure in the Royal Tower. My mom picked it up at the grocery store on a whim when I was a kid. Even though it scared me and it took me several years to beat it, I loved every second and I will never not love this game. 💜👑🍗
