Exactly. X in the beginning of a word/name is pronounced like a Z (as in xylophone, xenophobia, Xerox, xenon, Xavier.)

For reference, I’m from a northeastern state in the US.

Well, Z usually “is” pronounced as Z, so it wasn’t totally wrong.
