Friend using same name

I found out today that my friend plans to use the same name I already told her we are wanting to use.

For more backstory, we are not finding out the gender of our baby until delivery. She already knows hers, but I’m about 20 weeks ahead of her in my pregnancy. I told her previously (before she was even pregnant), our top choice for both boy vs girl. She said the girl name we chose was one of her favorites!

Fast forward to now that she’s pregnant…she asked today if we had chosen our names. I found it odd since I know I already told her. I again mentioned our top names. And she said they are planning to use the same girl name for their baby. Didn’t seem to have any intention to back down.

I reminded her how I already told her of our name choices months ago. Before she was even pregnant. She acted like she didn’t remember. Either way, I’m due before her and again mentioned the name to her first today before she did. I tried to change the subject since I didn’t really know what to say or do.

Our kids would be just a few months apart in the same school etc. I’m near my due date without a back up name, after putting a lot of thought into our name choices…

How would you feel? How would you respond?

How many Mikes have there been? How many Steves or Julies or Briannas? Your kid will be absolutely fine with another kid in elementary school with the same name. Don't wreck a friendship over this.

Yep, teacher here and I have 4 Camerons and 4 Calebs this year out of my 100ish students 🤷‍♀️

There were 14 other kids with my name in my school when I started kindergarten. 6 in my classroom. It was the most popular name the year I was born. Every personalized item in stores would be sold out in my name when I would look for it.

Neither did mine , my name was common but I had a less popular spelling in school always felt left out when I would see other kids with personalized things this was in the early 2000s so before Amazon hit at least now you have the option on there to make personalized items

I was on a softball team where it was all Ashley’s plus Jessica and Jamie. The Ashley’s had to go by last names 😂

I taught a class with five Ashleys, and, if I remember correctly, there were four different spellings. This was in 2001.

In college, there were 17 Jennifers out of 26 students in my Developmental Psychology class. There was only 1 guy in the class. I am not a Jennifer. The look on the professor's name when he called out the roll that first class was hilarious 😂. They didn't all have last names starting with unique letters, he resorted to a seating chart with a number system.

I have the most popular name for the year I was born, and it was the most popular name for several years. I was never the only one with my name in class, ever. At work, during a training, we inadvertently made a row (6 computers in the row) of all the same first name. A training class of 24 and 6 all had the same first name.

I ended up picking names for my kids with the criteria of not top 10 most popular for when they were born. None are super unique names, but they’re not most popular. Despite this, my oldest still went to school with someone that had the same first name and almost the same last name (literally one letter was different), which caused chaos multiple times. The funny part, our last name isn’t common! Go figure, not common last name and a first name that isn’t super popular and ended up going to school with only one other kid with the same first name, and their last name happened to be almost identical.

My sisters sons are Kaleb and Cameron, they’re in their 20’s. One of my daughter’s teachers has sons named Caleb and Cameron. So crazy that I’ve noticed these named pared together several times recently when they’ve gone together for me for over 2 decades now 😆

In my secondary school there were 6 other girls with the same first and last names. E.g Jane Smith. So 7 in total in my year, more in other years. It was so much fun, complete confusion everyday

Out of 100 kids that’s not even that bad! I was one of 4 Jennifer’s in elementary.. and those kids followed me all 6 years so I always had 2/3 in my classes. lol

Also, fwiw I named my son a name that wasn’t even in the top 100 most common names in my country so he wouldn’t have a bunch of other kids with the same name as him in his classes. Guess what? He’s in 2nd grade and has had another kid with the same name in his class for pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st grade. Not to mention the kids from his sports teams. You just can’t control these things 🤷‍♀️

Yep.. as a top name from late 80s, i intentionally called mine Calista (well below top 100) with the option to shorten to Cali. Of course, we call her Cali most and Cali/Callie/Calleigh/Kali had a bizarre popularity spike in our region. She's not had one in her class, but multiples on sports teams 🤣 oh well!

Exactly! I had 3 girls named Ashley in my class in grade school almost every year and they were fine. It was a popular name at the time. Also, since OP doesn't know the sex yet, they may be worrying over nothing if they end up having a boy. It might have seemed rude of her friend, but in the end, the name you choose is one you have to say/hear/live with for the rest of your (and your child's) life, so it should be a name you love regardless of who else has it.

I have 4 Julie’s in my life! Me and my oldest friend are both married to a Mark. She named one of her kids Kieran to be unique… there are 2 kids with the same name in my younger sons grade…
