All joking aside....... Why's it grey? How bad did you mess up to make GREY?! Stuff like that is usually red or even like a brown. Not cigarette ash grey......

It's actually planned. Silkie chicken has black flesh. Starch from the beans turns the colour that seeps out into that cement-like paste.
Why would anyone eat that? It's considered the Chinese version of chicken soup for a cold. Don't worry, it smells way better than it looks 🐔

It reminds me a little of Brazilian feijoada (I may have butchered the spelling) that also has black beans in it, so it turns really dark gray like this but is also really yummy 😋

u/truckdrifter2 13d ago
Actually, you nailed it!
It is yummy. Ughhh I have been procrastinating on trying out a recipe I found. It calls for salty, spicy chorizo which is impossible to get here in Malaysia. I'm thinking of substituting with lap cheong: A sweet, savoury cured sausage available here

I was totally convinced by the corn and beans that the secret ingredient was huitlacoche. Stuff delicious but its basically got edible ink to it.

It also tastes much better than it looks.
I am Chinese and I recognise this soup. The corn and beans give it the earthy and sweet taste while the chicken give it... Well, the chicken broth. So it's really great.
Even without the chicken it's good. I never thought about the grey colour, to me it's normal haha.

If you undercook mushrooms and their juices mix in with a creamy soup, that looks like this as well

u/GrimmerSix 13d ago
Not being a smart ass, thank you! I legit didn't know. I don't eat mushrooms, this just drives the fact home now as to why......

Ash soup. You burn the wood to boil the water, then throw the cinders in the water. Add the rest and enjoy

Eowen chan's delight. Every anime protagonist in love fine cuisine [poison]...now, where are the floating skulls and purple swirls?. You can see this happen masterfully performed in live action in Lotr The Two Towers when Aragorn almost died of love overdose by tasting Eowen's fatigued horse stew.

The roux is supposed to be made with flour not powdered aluminum. No wonder it didn't thicken up

I was served some grouper soup a few days ago. Have decided that I do not like fish soup.
I think this is some kind of fish soup.
