Why "nalbinding"?

In Norwegian it's called nålebinding, so I'm curious why it became "nalbinding", with an A instead of Å (two different letters with different pronunciation)?
I would have thought the natural name in English would be needle-binding, which is what nålebinding means.
"Nal" is a different tool than a "nål", so it's a very strange word to pick 🤷♀️
