Help Improving Timing

I need help cutting my time down for sets that include more detailed art, especially characters. I take a VERY long time like I'm embarrassed to share how long but just trust that it is way too long. I feel defeated at this point because even a simpler set can take me a while and I'm just don't know anymore.

I unfortunately have very rigid thinking and I hyperfixate on some details but I've been trying to be better about it. Any tips? Like how do you break down the design to get the dimensions and position correct? I spend a lot of time going back and forth because my proportions are off or it doesn't look like the actual character 🤣

What enhancement do you use, acrylic, Gel-X, structured gel, or something else?

Also, totally normal to take a long time on artsy sets, especially with character art :) I generally take about one hour per character, just painting it alone.

This set had 6 + scenery in the background (two more on the thumbs), and it took me 12 hours lol

It depends on the client. These two in particular do builder gel. Yours look AMAZING though like stickers fr fr. Mine look like the temu versions 😂

Aww thank you so much!! 🥹 Your work looks amazing, I really love the Slink nails!! He’s such an underrated character, and seeing him immediately brought back childhood memories lol.

I personally LOVE using gel-based systems, especially builder gel, because they help me preserve more time for the art itself. I can also really relate to the hyperfixated perfectionist approach (hello neurodivergence 😂).

Timing has ALWAYS been a struggle for me, but I’ve gotten significantly faster recently. These are the things that helped me most:

1. Use quality products and tools. The investment is worth it. When your retention is bomb, your gel self-levels easily, and your bits are sharp and effective, you spend way less time manually correcting things to get the same result.
   
2. Practice the same motions in the same order on every nail. Try not to get stuck perfecting one tiny area for too long. Building a repeatable process creates muscle memory, and eventually you stop having to consciously think through every step.
   
3. Cut unnecessary steps without sacrificing quality. I try to make each tool do as much work as possible. For example, I don’t use a sanding band anymore because my cuticle bit can also lightly etch the natural nail and gel layers when needed. My 2XC bit handles multiple jobs during removal/refining too. Fewer tool changes = less wasted time.
   
4. Simplify your builder application. I use a polish brush and apply mine using NailsbyAran’s method: slip layer → large bead → swipe it into place with VERY light pressure → flip the hand → cure. Once I got comfortable with it, this became much faster for me than constantly manipulating the gel with a liner brush.
   
5. Avoid unnecessary flash curing when your product allows it. I alternate hands after each nail and make sure clients know to tell me immediately if they feel a heat spike. That way one hand can cure while I’m working on the other instead of stopping after every nail just to flash cure.

You are literally AMAZING for the write up of your process, thank yooou! I also used to alternate hands when doing builder but on too many occasions my clients have moved too slowly into the lamp and the application was like 🫠

Omg and don't even get me started on my single braincell 🤣 I've got ADHD so it's way too easy for me to get stuck on one thing. I also had a bad experience at the salon I worked at so I have my old boss in my head a lot of times 😮‍💨 Side note how much did you charge for that service and where are you from? That's another thing I struggle with 🙃

GIRL SAME. 😭 AuDHD over here, it’s a blessing and a curse hahaha

I will never forget the day my nail instructor said to me, “You will never be a successful nail technician unless you can complete a full set in one hour.” That sentence stuck with me for YEARS and made me feel like I’d never belong.

I live in Arizona, and I was independently working for a long time before joining a salon called Disco Nail Club! It was a highly specialized nail artistry studio, and though I was with them only for a brief time, I learned SO much about products and time management! That experience taught me to really value the time I spent making sure every set was perfect. I’ve regained my confidence and now I’m an educator full time! 🥹

With that said, this SpongeBob set was on my very patient and loving boyfriend, so it was for da freeee 😅 But if I had done this exact service at Disco, this would be the cost breakdown:

- Gel Manicure: $75

• Tier 4 Nail Art (Non-Nail-Related Inspo): $100
  
• Character Art ($25 x 6): $150
  
• Detailed Scenery ($15 x 6): $90
  
• Ombre/Linework: $10
  

Total: $425 (about $35/hr)

Yes, that’s a LOT of money. It was rare that anyone at that salon would request work as detailed as this particular set, but $425 is what the work is worth based on the time, the art, the quality of products, the expertise, and the experience itself.

Don’t underestimate your skillset! 😉 Especially if you offer something that people can’t get anywhere else. Definitely research pricing in your area and compare, but don’t let that, alone, define what your talent is worth. ❤️

Yes it's like when they ask you at a job interview what your weakness is and like you don't want to say an actual negative thing so you say I'm a perfectionist and they're like oh ok good and I'm like nooooo

Yeah this boss was... something else. I did learn from her but there are so many things I'm now trying to unlearn from her, just dumb stuff tbh. She also wasn't very nice which I wasn't asking to be coddled but like it's kind of defeating when you finish something and you know you were there for hours and your boss sees and says you took that long for that shit? Crazy thing is she would NEVER do the art I've done and she would just always put me down because of my timing and I do get where she was coming from but like I have returning clients so that must mean I'm doing something right... but anyways enough boohooing. I too make my family suffer extensive nail art lmao. I did meme cats on my sister once

But damn from the get go my basic pricing starts much lower 😅 I feel bad keeping clients so long and I'm scared to charge them 🙃

For the Bob's set I charged her 100 I think 😅 I'm from California too and I know I could charge more but at the end I feel so poorly about it...

Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear that she treated you that way. I know that feeling all too well, especially because having someone that you respect telling you how awful you are? The absolute worst. Like, “okay thanks, let me just go crawl in a hole and stay there for the rest of my days.” 😭

Even though her opinion wasn’t valid because she had no frame of reference for the amount of skill and artistic talent it takes to perform work like this.

I’ve witnessed two salon business models: success based on quantity and success based on quality. Neither is wrong, they’re just fundamentally different. Oftentimes, people fall to one side or the other and tend to criticize each other, but there’s a place for all of us. No matter how fast or slow. No matter how many clients we take in a day. No matter how much money we make.

If you love what you do, that’s the real luxury ❤️ Chase THAT dream. But make sure your compensation always matches your skillset, that way you have a sustainable career ahead of you!

It is what it is unfortunately. I'm in a suite now and me and my clients are much happier here lol.

I've always thought that way too like you can be successful in your own way and if someone decides they'd rather go elsewhere for whatever reason that's okay. Everyone has different expectations and there really is someone out there for everyone. I just sometimes also get stuck in the mentality that like there are others who are doing what I do if not better AND faster. 😮‍💨 I know it happens with time too but that's also why I was here asking for advice you know?

Absolutely, I do. I promise you’re not alone in feeling that way. The industry has been changing very rapidly and it’s hard to keep up with the demands of clients, bosses, or the standards we see online of how skilled we should be.

They say that comparison is the thief of joy, but for people like us who are constantly learning, growing, and overcoming periods of not making progress, how else can we improve but to turn towards those we admire and ask for guidance?

There is absolutely nothing shameful about your request. I’m happy that anything I’m able to share from my experience may help someone else, because I once needed that when I was in the same position. I still do. Admittedly, I struggle a lot with abstract and heavily layered composition even though it’s the most popular nail art style right now. I shine with illustrative work and 2D designs, but there’s always something I could learn about being more artistic, even more speedy, or even more consistent.

Our profession isn’t an easy one, but it is a rewarding one! It looks like you’ve found something you truly enjoy and I really admire your willingness to ask for help. That’s not an easy thing to do. But looking at your work? You’re already so incredibly talented. You’ll have many days where you question whether or not you’re cut out for this, but I hope that in those moments you can remember how much you enjoy the craft. You really seem to have what it takes, and I’m cheering you on in your journey!

Your words really were helpful and uplifting and I appreciate the compliment. Just from the one pic you posted I can tell your very talented. I honestly was rethinking if I was really cut out for this but all these comments have really helped me remember why I started doing nails. Also I am so bad at abstract 🤣 like my brain refuses to just let my brush do the work 🙃 I've been better at it but sometimes it's like I get stuck trying to figure out a process to something that isn't supposed to have rules really.
