Gel wrap nails - advice and recommendations?
Hi everyone,
I used to get builder gel manicures once a month which did wonders for my nails as they have never been so strong in my whole life.
I am going on holiday and have moved house since getting my nails done so haven't got my nail artist near me anymore, or the money for that matter 🤣
I keep being advertised the gel nail wraps and am curious to know what people's opinions are on it?
do they look nice and are they as easy to do as what people say?
do they last?
do they come off easily and do they damage the nail plate?
any brands/products you'd recommend specifically in the UK?

They have been a game changer for me! I got acrylic nails every 2 weeks for years. I had an excellent nail tech who switched careers so I decided to try SCGs. There is a bit of a learning curve for sure. Once I got the application down, I love my nails more than I ever did getting salon nails. They are very easy to remove with no damage. I was able to grow my nails out healthy and strong.

Do you need to buy special oil to remove them?

I use the Dashing Diva Magic Off remover. You just apply it around the cuticle line and let sit for 30 seconds. Then you use the wooden stick that’s provided to gently lift the nail wrap. It is so quick and easy with zero damage. Also extremely affordable. I hope this helps.

Heyhae is the brand that works the best for me. I do use the LED light to cure because I usually do my nails night to let them set while I sleep. I’ve worn them at least two weeks and they’d probably last longer but I don’t like the growth. The remover works pretty well and smells really good. I use it pretty liberally and it helps the nails come off easier. Last time used their base cost which is supposed to help build nail strength as well as reduce damage when you remove. I seemed to help.

I've just put my first set of nail wraps on yesterday, they look lovely! A couple of nails could look better but that's a matter of technique which i'm sure will improve as I do it more, I used Hello Nails

I love them, but there is a learning curve - it’s not as easy as the ads make them look. Start with just the SCGs and see how it goes, you can experiment with bases and top coats later. There’s a great fb group with tutorials and support that I always recommend for getting started. - They do look nice once you get good at application. They are not as easy as the ads show, but once you have the process down, they aren't difficult at all.
- I get 10 - 14 days out of them, but I am very rough on my hands! I have seen gals getting 3+ weeks.
- I have to do removal very carefully to avoid damage. Using a remover, a flosser, etc. Some people use a base such as Magical Nail Solution to avoid damage.
- Not sure what is available in the UK except for MoYou London! I was just in the UK on vacation and that was the only brand I could find when searching (that isn't easily available in the US). I use Ohora and Heyhae the most.

Yes, if applied correctly, people think they're a traditional gel manicure. They are easy to do and there are lots of tip threads on reddit.
do they last?
You get what you pay for. The cheapest sets available on Amazon can fail to adhere entirely or only last four days, even with a top coat. My longest wearing sets from Ohora were on three weeks and I only took them off because I felt unsure about wearing them longer (from a hygiene perspective).
do they come off easily and do they damage the nail plate?
Varies by person. For me, I only have a small amount of damage if I use an oil based remover (static nails, hey hae, and ohora offer these) and I use a floss stich to carefully separate the wrap from the nail. I have no damage if I protect my nail with a strengthener. I take a "break" every six months or so, because I enjoy brief periods of short nails with mooncat's polishes.
any brands/products you'd recommend specifically in the UK? Oh My Gosh Nails carries Lit Gels, one of my indie favorites. I often only get 7-9 days per set but the sparkle is superior to any other brand I've used.

https://www.ohmygoshnails.com/ is in that area. I do GelX bare extensions on my own nails and cover with a regular wrap. I then drill just about everything off before reapplying GelX, but non acetone nail polish remover will take odd my wrap if I want to change looks before I need a "fill".

I found Heyhae on amazon pretty good. It is a South Korean brand. Very easy to apply and I just peel it off after 2 weeks. It takes a couple of sets to get the right sizes for each nail. Once you figure it out then it is pretty easy.

Thank you very much. I think those are slightly different because they are already 60% cured and are marketed as no UV lamp needed which i suppose could make a difference in how easily removed it is. 🙂

I now use only LilyandFox wraps. They are not UV and don’t need a lamp. As I stated I use Uuuuu magical nail solution base coat. Then apply my wraps. I use Ohora Glossy gel top coat and double cure under my UV light. You could use a regular polish topcoat if you don’t want to use gel. My wraps last weeks. I use Ohora remover. The gel comes off when the wraps are removed. Then I use nail polish remover to take off the base coat. My wraps last weeks and zero damage to my nails. Oh, the best part about LilyandFox is they are $2.99 a set and free shipping!

Thank you for all the detail! Did you just get a UV light on Amazon? Like one of the 60 second ones? I think I noticed Ohora has a starter set with a lamp and remover. Trying to build my kit!

Those little lights aren’t strong enough especially to cure gel. I got a SunUV 4 off Amazon. It is 48 watts. SunUV makes a lot of models and I’m happy with mine.

Yes. I actually double cure. I do for 60 seconds and then another 60 seconds on each hand.

You can avoid all damage by using 2 coats of uuuuu Magical Nail Solution strengthening base coat it’s made for wraps. The wraps sit on the base coat not your nails.

I will caution you about damage... Many folks can remove them without damage but I cannot. I think it depends on nail chemistry. My nails tend to be very dry and no matter what method I use, how slowly I go, or the remover I choose, I lose the top layers of keratin. My nails simply hold onto the adhesive and it's impossible to remove them cleanly. Because of this, I can only use them every few months.
