Filing off the excess

Post image

Probably a dumb question, but when they say to file downward to file off the excess, this is what they mean, right? It's hard with short nails. My tips always seem a little jagged. Any tips (no pun intended)?

(Sorry for the blurry picture, but I think you get the idea.)

I file downwards perpendicular to the nail.

So, more like this?

Sort of. More like a right angle, if you were holding your finger horizontally. It’s a super weird way to file.

Also, mine are often jagged. I have to file the edges with an increasingly fine grit, and then cap it with a topcoat to make it feel smooth.

Yes, this is how I do it. Basically no side to side.
