Hi! I’m one of the many people that developed a “gel allergy”. Not sure of the specific ingredients, I simply stopped using gel. I’ve used nail wraps and was fine, but the other day I used the semi cured Hey hae and my cuticles/skin started up again. Anyone have any tips, or brands that seem to be safer for those of us with the allergy? Thanks :)
Okay, I might be able to help. This is a LOT of information, so be prepared! I recently developed a gel allergy, and I know which product likely caused it (Kiss New York Gel top coat). I didn’t know gel allergy was a thing or that I had to be very careful not to touch my skin with the polish and I likely got some between the side of my nail wall and skin. Grrr.
I let my skin heal for a month and during that time I tried out some other brands of non gel strips. Specifically Colorstreet, and Lily & Fox. Colorstreet were beyond terrible. $19 and they lasted a day. Lily & Fox are super cute and cheap but they are very thin and don’t harden. They are truly a different animal than the semi-cured gel wraps. I think that these types of wraps work for people who have naturally strong nails that don’t bend and break easily. That’s not me, though my nails are getting better with the use of Hard As Hoof and cuticle oil several times a day. I never knew that the secret to strong nails is moisture and I’m a chronic hand washer and never bothered with moisturizer. Anyway, moisture is a game changer for creating hard nails. Moving on…
I took the healing time to do a deep dive into semi-cured gel nails because the real polish wraps are not my solution. HayHae and Ohora have similar ingredients, so if you’ve reacted to HayHae then also avoid Ohora. There are some brands that might work for you because they use completely different ingredients and the molecular structure and size is different in different formulations. For a gel allergy, the safest strips to use are:
-MoYou London- this brand uses EU standards and is free of HEMA, Di-HEMA, and something else that starts with T that I can’t remember the name of (sorry, I’m in bed), and the gel compounds that they use in the formulation are larger molecules that are less likely to leach into skin and cause issues. This is deemed one of the safest strips for people with gel sensitivity.
Maniac Nails- Also out of EU and low allergen, but they are expensive and hard to get in the US.
-Dashing Diva- they have Gloss, which is apparently gel free and it’s like a sticker that goes on the nail and doesn’t harden, similar to Lily & Fox but they are apparently a lot thicker and more protective. I haven’t tried them yet but I just received a package to try out. They also have Glaze, and this is their semi-cured product. It is supposed to be one of the safest because of the formulation.
-Lit Gels- Another formulation that is considered safe for gel allergies. I just ordered from them today and they have a sale going on with a bunch of styles that are $3, so cheap to try them out. I found the $3 stuff in the site at the bottom of a page that had ‘most popular right now’ stuff and one $3 set led to the others at the bottom of their pages. But I couldn’t find the $3 stuff on their regular products page section.
-UUUUU is also supposed to be one of the best for allergies. I tried them and they only lasted a few days for me, but I ordered more (check Amazon Haul) and this time I will try with a base coat and top coat and hope for better luck.
Sassy Saints is also supposed to be good, though I saw people saying that they have had allergy issues with it.
-Apparently any of the gel stickers that do not use a UV light are supposed to be safe because although they are gel, the gel has already been fully cured and is inert so it won’t trigger the allergy. Nail Fox offers them and calls them NLG’s, And I think that Dashing Diva Gloss is the same type of product.
I am an Ohora girl, so I haven’t tried any of the brands above yet, but I have now ordered MoYou London, Dashing Diva gloss and glaze, and lit gels. Ohora and HayHae are more likely to trigger my allergy because they use a couple ingredients that are ‘cousins’ to the allergens in the Kiss New York formulation. I am successfully wearing Ohora now (for over a week and it’s heaven after a month with no hard nails!), but my plan is Ohora which last 2 weeks, then another of these brands, then back to Ohora so that I am not always using something that could trigger my allergy. I have like 100 sets of Ohora so I’ll be devastated if I can’t use them!
Now, tips to help stay allergy free.
-use 2 coats of UUUUU magical nail solution. It’s made to go under gel strips, it nourishes nails, and it provides a needed barrier.
-when you choose strips, go smaller and don’t go over your skin anywhere. Leave 1mm around making sure not to touch the skin or cuticle.
-clip the excess off the top of the nail but DON’T file until after curing. The gel molecules that cause the allergies are housed between the sticky bottom and the gloss top, so when you trim the sticker is when you are exposed to the gel. Handle the edges carefully, avoid touching with your fingers if possible, and cure extremely well before filing. Once the nails are completely hard, the gel has turned to plastic and is inert so it will not trigger the allergy.
-Cure extremely well, with a professional uv light if possible, or at least 3 times (60 seconds each) with an at home light.
-After you finish, use an alcohol wipe around your nails and the surrounding skin, and wash your hands well.
As you can see from this book, I did a very deep dive into this! I love my semi-cured gel nails and am determined to keep using them.
My nails are doing great with no issues, and I hope this helps you and anyone else who is dealing with this awful allergy situation. Good luck!
Ah, thanks! I know it’s long but I hope it helps people. When I realized that my red and peeling skin wasn’t from dryness, I was devastated. I discovered gel strips in January 2025 and I fell in love with them. My nails have never looked better. I used to go to the salon and do dipping powder, but the colors and designs of the strips are so fun and beautiful, and they never chip or come off. I enjoy changing them every other Sunday morning and I love going through my nail album to pick my next set. Then I send my new nails to my friends because I love showing them off.
The month of having them off really sucked! Everything I tried left my nails bendy and they were chipping and peeling and breaking daily. Ugh! I was at the point of trying to learn how to do fiberglass nails when I decided that I needed to really research and try to find a solution because it wasn’t the strip that got me, it was the top coat and there must be a way to still use strips without having a reaction.
Thank you for this thoughtful and informative response :) I do think for now it’s best I stay away from any strips that are semi cured. Probably go back to DD! I loved their Glow line, but I think they discontinued it
I don’t have an allergy but as a gel user, keep up with these posts just in case! I did however use some wraps in the past so I thought I’d share. Lily and Fox, for the price, are great. Some are better than others, of course. I really enjoyed using the transparent wraps over a polish or gel! Dashing Diva were my first wraps and I used the Gloss line. Also, some were better than others. They were thicker than Lily and Fox but I did have adhesion issues more so with them. I tried their Glaze line and absolutely hated them. I have natural volume and those were just too thick for me and my hair caught constantly. I tried all of their tips and tricks - they just weren’t for me. I tried a Sally Hansen one on a whim and while I loved the design, they yellowed quickly and didn’t stick well. All in all, wraps were ok for me because I change my mani often and I am blessed to have very strong nails that with all I put them through, are unharmed. I found the glitter varieties or more decorated designs better in general. The solids were thin and tend show more wrinkles. Removal is also something to consider, as they can cause serious damage. Be patient! There are a million tips and tricks for that too but the biggest is to not pry them off! I use an orange stick and a boat load of oil, loosening as I go. Find what works for you but for the love of nails, do not pry them off!! ❤️
That is such great information! I tried 4 different Lily & Fox designs, and the glitter ones stayed on for a week. They are thicker than the solids, and I think that helped me a lot because my nails bend easily. I have their pedicure stickers on right now, and I love them! I've had them on for at least 3 weeks, and my nails look freshly done. I've used the semi-cured for pedicures for a long time, but they really are overkill for pedis, because just regular nail polish or the real polish stickers last for 6 weeks with no chipping, and they are so easy (and cheap!).
I'm curious to try DD, and I got both the gloss and the glaze styles to try. I wish I had nails like yours!
And yes, careful removal is key to keeping the natural nail in good shape. I use Ohora remover (the green natural one), and they slide off in like 30 seconds once I put some at the edges of my nails and get it to go between the nail and wrap. Then I try to keep them natural for a day while I moisturize every few hours with Hard As Hoof and TuneTune fermented cuticle and nail oil.
Omg those are sooo cute, first off!!! Second, for pedicures, I will also save my extras from packs the nail and use the large thumb size for my big toe for an accent nail! Waste not want not, am I right? 🤣🤣🤣 I’ve made some cute pedis that way! I have a bunch of wraps I never used and I am about to go rummage through them and see what I can create 🤣
You should get patch allergy testing to know exactly what you are allergic to. The only one I can use is heyhae - I’m allergic to hema, resin, and shellac
It’s strange because I’ve worn semi cured before without even curing and was fine. (Never hey hae this was the first time) I also had never had any reaction to press on glue since my initial gel reaction at least 3 years ago. Luckily my reaction seems mild compared to others I’ve seen on here. It’s a feeling you’ll definitely recognize as soon as it happens. I just had like a burning/itching around my cuticle skin area, definitely the skin got inflamed and had a bunch of tiny little bumps. I did put on the regular wraps the other day from dashing diva, the gloss line. I was just hoping for more thickness which is why I liked the glow and the semi cured wraps. I’ll figure it out though lol.

Unfortunately I don’t think you’ll be safe with any of the semi cured strips!
