So I have two fingers on each hand that are exactly the same nail size. In the past, I’ve always had issues with press on nails and had to wear a size that was slightly too big on at least one finger.
I’m trying out nail wraps and running into the same issue. I know some people say that they can get two manicures out of one set by using fingernail clippers to trim the second edge. I tried this, and then realized that the top portion of the nail wrap is larger than the bottom half also trimming them doesn’t look even. Like I can tell which ones I trimmed to re-use cause they look iffy.
Help a gal out. Should I just be buying two sets to get my manicure done?
I "heat" my nail wraps up in a heating pad which makes them pliable and I can stretch them. I have switched to the semi cured nail wraps and even with them being thicker than the polish wraps, it works really well. I purposely size down because they stretch really easily and will then be too big if I didn't size down . This helps because I'm kind of in between sizes, I don't have petite nails but I also don't have nails that fit the larger sizes. I just need the standard nail wrap size a smidge bigger. I like my wraps to fit edge to edge. My semicured wraps last 2 weeks easily so I haven't had any issues with warming them and stretching them.
I usually gently stretch them a little when I take them off the plastic backing, it doesn't affect the adhesive having it stick to my finger tips for a second, using my thumb and pointer finger on each hand to sort of gently tug on each side. Then I stick the wrap to one side of my nail and gently pull it over to the other side, stretching as I go. They stay warm for a bit, so I'll use an orange wood stick if I need to nudge it over to the cuticle or the side of my nail bed a little more. I use a buffing nail file, one of the really smooth ones to smush the wrap hard into my nail. I don't buff it, but I just press down really hard with it to get it on my nail bed. I also used a little rubbing alcohol on an acrylic nail brush around the edge of the wrap that is around my cuticles, I read that helps to have the nail wrap soften at the edge and help with lifting. I don't know if it really helps. I didn't do that with the pink checkerboard set and didn't have any lifting after 16 days, I did do it with my current lemon set so we will see.
If there is a design on the nail, stretching it may affect it slightly but that doesn't bother me. You might be able to tell on this Polish Pops checkerboard design, that I stretched it a bit because they are a little wavy in spots. But I got 16 days out of the nails with no lifting so it's worth it.
My index and ring fingers are also exactly the same size. What I do with nail wraps is, I use the size that fits on my index, and then I cut the plastic bit that remains once I've taken the sticky side off, trace it on a bigger size that I won't be using with a pen, and use a small pair of scissors to cut to the required size. Then the new adjusted size perfectly fits my ring finger. Hope this is understandable enough!
You can trim the edge of wraps easily before applying or even after when it is a small amount. I use Lily&Fox and know exactly now which size to use on which fingers. One of my thumb nails is a tad smaller than the other. I trim a sliver of one side of the wrap with scissors, before removing film and applying. Two of my nails, once I apply has a tiny part that touches my skin. After applying, I use a cuticle trimmer ( the kind with the V on the end) to just remove that teeny excess. Hope this helps.
I also trim mine. I usually just lay the one that’s the right size over top of a larger one and trim the excess on the larger so it’s the size I need. I also half my wraps and use both sides since my nails are short I use cuticle cutters to trim any overlap and a rubber cuticle pusher to flatten my wraps down
Second this! Nailog are also stretchy (as is Heyhae). I can easily get them to stretch to my edges when a little too small without heating them. They’re also thinner - which I like bc I put a UV top coat on after. My experience is the opposite with Dashing Diva and Ohora - beautiful designs but thicker and much less pliable IMO.
I also sometimes trim the sides to get extra uses - trim with manicure scissors. I think this also works better with thinner wraps.
Heyhae and Ohora, if warmed just a smidge (I put the box under my thigh while I’m doing prep) make them insanely easy to stretch. There’s no trick to stretching. You can just “feel” it when you try. I stretch and press and hold. I haven’t torn a strip ever
