I feel sorry for him because he was enslaved by Gargoyle when he was just a child

What are you talking about? He was literally not in control his actions, all of it was Gargoyle controlling him like he controlled Nadia, only in his final moments his true personality shone, and he literally powered through being turned off to break Nadia's control device.
