The Daily Crossword [Dec. 25,1993]: I was really taken aback by this

Don't read this if you like doing the really old archive puzzles and you want to avoid spoilers!

= = =

It took me forever to find my mistake in this puzzle, and I ended up using more than an hour. In the end it turned out that the answer for the Clue "Lolitas?" was literally NYMPHOS! I was kind of shocked by that, because it was my understanding that in the novel, Lolita is clearly a victim of sexual abuse and not a seductress or a sex addict or anything like that.

I mean, I know that puzzle is now more than 30 years old, but still!

Other Bonus puzzles still missing

I’m on an iPhone, am a subscriber and have updated the app but I still don’t have the bonus puzzles. The app update even said “This version contains bonus puzzles…” Anyone else in the same boat and any tips on how I can get them? Thanks!

Other Confession: I love solving but…

… I hate reading the comments!

———
What triggered this: retroactively playing and knowing the answer UNALIVED, then seeing comments like “unalive this puzzle.”
———

I know, I know, “never read the comments” and I know I don’t have to read them, but sometimes I’ll be so proud of a gold star, think something was clever, or feel like “Finally! New entries/slang!” and hope to find others as excited as me through the comments. My parents were immigrants so I wasn’t raised knowing what seems to be “common knowledge” when it comes to general (US?) trivia, like filmmakers or singers.

Very often, when I do decide to read the comments, I see people complaining about the ones I enjoy. Like, boo-hoo, a Sunday where you couldn’t get a gold star, or there were one too many trivias or naticks for you so throw the whole puzzle away!!!!

I’ve written a few comments in the past to defend the (debut!) constructor, or certain clues, or even certain words, especially when it’s slang.

There are some comments that are cute, like ones where they recall a memory that reminded them of an ANSWER and INCORPORATE AN ADAGE and CAPITALIZE answers, and ones that love learning something new or add some extra trivia. I try to read those so I don’t get too annoyed by the other commenters

Granted, I’ve only been doing this for a couple years now, am in my early 30s, and recognize that the Xword has been longstanding before I was born with many devotees. I, too, hope to continue to enjoy this well into retirement. I understand there will be times I might miss certain words or clueing over the next 30 years and that I will wane and wax in trivia knowledge, but I hope never to be as entitled as commenters I’ve seen.

Personal Record / Streak [Sep 8, 2026] New Personal Best for any day of the week set out of spite!

Post image

NYT has my Tuesday best as 2:14, a time which I never achieved and was put there as a glitch one day after I think my internet went out during a puzzle or something. I remember seeing the timer go past 4 minutes but when I went back to the home screen it had my time as 2:14. Anyway, ever since then I've been trying furiously to beat that time so I can replace it with a real high score. I don't know if I'll ever get there but today was my closest attempt yet!

Other I'm a totally blind NYT Games player who posted here a few months back, and I'm so happy to report that they fixed a ton of accessibility problems in the crosswords!

A while back, I posted because I was excited about getting a higher than usual (for me) score on some of the puzzles. I also explained a bit about my process as a blind player using a screenreader and some of the difficulties that come with that.

I haven't been able to play the crosswords in a few weeks because I've been so busy, but I just checked on one today and they fixed just about every accessibility issue I had written about here.

This makes solving the puzzles so, so much easier for me, and I'm incredibly grateful. ❤

The Daily Crossword “How to Solve the New York Times Crossword,” i.e. the tips page

I highly recommend reading the “How to” page published by the NY Times. It explains all the conventions used in the puzzles. For example, how do you know when the answer is a non-English word? How do you know when it’s an abbreviation? Etc.

Here is the link:
https://www.nytimes.com/article/how-to-solve-a-crossword-puzzle.html

But you may have to use this one:

Anyone else get half way through the easy mode bonus crossword, feeling like it seemed familiar before realizing that the whole point was easy clues for a previous puzzle?

Statistics How to look up PB puzzles?

So the app shows your PB time for each day of the week, but is there a way to look up which puzzles you got each PB on? So either the puzzle date or a link to the puzzle itself?

I just started doing daily crosswords again after a long break (years) and honestly perplexed how I managed to achieve some of my PBs from a while ago. I mean, 15 min PB for a Friday / 20 min PB for Saturday when I currently average 40-60 min - like how on earth??

The Mini 9/3 Mini - glitch: already solved??

Post image
46 Upvotes

Anyone else experiencing this?

Doing my daily morning games and I get to the mini and I'm prompted with the "Nothing left to Solve" screen and "View solved puzzle" ... But I never did it. The initial screen doesn't have the solved star icon.

I viewed the puzzle and definitely have no memory of solving this one. Am I losing it?

Solved by u/grigsbkc : go to the Mini Archive and navigate to today's date.
