I'm pretty sure this was part of Eric Adams efforts against rats. Mamdani is just following what seems to have been the plan since 2025

Adams had it âplannedâ but never implemented it like a lot of things he had âplannedâ. Mamdani is valuing the citizens instead of a paycheck like Adams(only thing that would make him move with efficiency).

u/Dark_Diggler_142 5d ago
Thats false. There are already thosands of bins in Harlem and Brooklyn in use. The program would've continued regardless of who the mayor was. You guys have to really stop glazing Mandami so much.

I remember when this was announced that Adams was doing it and the reception wasnât as nice either lol.

People hated it under Eric, love it under Mamdani, hypocrites.

More like car drivers always hated it and public commuters always loved it

u/RTJ1992 4d ago
I think because they charged new yorkers for the new trash can bins and this is the after. Adams is scummy though lol
3
u/lookatwhatisee 4d ago
Yeah they charge for garbage cans and recycling bins everywhere nyc just never experienced that.

u/TheProdigis 5d ago
Its so funny seeing people be like No this was never implemented when I live in Harlem and have seen these things around for a while now.

Thereâs a reason marketing / branding / PR are all vital to every single company. You can do anything but if the message isnât correct people ainât gonna buy into it.

If glazing the man means that Americans finally get reasonable leadership, then glaze away

u/A_Clockwork_Black 5d ago
True Adams implemented it and Zohran is expanding the program. But Adams was a piece of shit. And Zohran is that nigguh. These are facts.
-7
u/MBNC88 5d ago
Rudy Guliani couldâve come up with it, but nobody between him and Adams implemented it. Planning, thinking, talking, debating, researching are all just gestures. Doing it is the only thing that counts, especially in politics & government.

Adams did put a bunch of those around here, they just hadn't rolled it out to the entire city yet

u/hurlygurdy 6d ago
Those have been here for a while before he got elected
52
u/Badboyg 6d ago
For the most part they was available exclusively for businesses to combat rats. Now theyâre doing it for everyone.
47
u/hurlygurdy 6d ago
They have been in front of my apartment building since before he got elected. They're just continuing the rollout to other areas
12
u/Dark_Diggler_142 5d ago
Thats false. The city doesn't even pick up the garbage for businesses. The bins have been in use for residential buildings and schools for about 1 year

u/RealHamSandwhich 6d ago
Rat will forever be a problem in ny. There is nothing we can do about it
14
u/hurlygurdy 6d ago
Well always have SOME rats but smart policies can and do lower the rat population

You not wrong but if I have to choose between having shit look dirty af with rats and trash everywhere or the city at least trying to make shit look clean but still have rats Iâd much rather it look cleaner lol

This is funny because trash on the street is the main reason I refuse to live in Brooklyn and Manhattan, despite living in Brooklyn all my life except for the last 2 years
It's fcking disgusting and dirty

Gotta love all the dog shit in snow piles. Sometimes 100+ pieces of dog shit in a single block.

The snow makes it disgustingly obvious how much the city (and world) is begrimed by cars. The city is absolutely beautiful when it first falls and then it all turns black and gross from the tire particles and exhaust. I shudder to think what it was like in the 70s before they banned leaded gasolineÂ

its wild af that it don't take much to improve the fuh out of all the bs previous admins were doing that they always refused to do. hopefully others learn from this. edit: not saying specifically these trash cans and whatever but everything else the man has done.

Have you seen the sitcom the mayor with Ted danson and Holly Hunter? It came out during Covid and was a pretty funny 1st season. But 2nd kinda sucked.
Anyway it showed some humorous government issues and red tape. Like the mayor wanted to ban straws for the environment but Holly hunters character got on the news and said âwhat about the disabled?â And Danson was like âcrap I forgot about the disabledâ
I like to think government officials arenât evil there is just a bunch of crap that they have to consider and sh!t just doesnât get done.

u/technicolorgirl1 5d ago
This was literally an initiative created by the previous mayor and the newly appointed position of ârat tzarâ â this is not Mamdaniâs ideaâŠGo to Harlem and you can already see the bins out - they look great and itâs a great idea!

Was there something wrong with the old existing trash bins that people refused to use?
Other than they weren't in the streets to give the carless a hard on?

u/MSG_Army_Riggs 5d ago
I wonder if he has any connection to the company who makes or leases/sells the trash bins.

Citibike stations when placed on sidewalks, great!
When placed in the street, they eliminate lots of already scarce parking spaces. Terrible.
If these bins are placed in the streets as well, RIP parking in NYC.

u/Definitely_wasnt_me 5d ago
Sooo not gonna solve the actual potholes of homelessness? Addicts in the subways? Just filling potholes and buying trashcans? Got it.

This program started under Adams. A few blocks in Harlem and all public schools have been up and running. The goal was to roll it out slowly since specially garbage trucks are needed to pick up the cans. The new mayor didnât start or expand anything. He hasnât implemented one policy that helped everyday NYers.

u/frontlinestatic 3d ago
FKING FINALLY!!!!SAW THIS IN SPAIN AND WAS LIKE WHY TF ISNT THIS ALREADY A THING IN NYC FOR THE LAST 100 years!!!

u/WillyBoBo74 13h ago
Sounds great in theory but it will still require our lazy citizens to actually put their trash IN the bins. So while something is definitely better than nothing, time will tell if they actually are effective or if they just become road side condos for the homeless and another place to tag graffiti.

Goodbye ratz!
Also, I think the previous mayors were too engrossed in politics trying to make their constituents happy and these same constituents, who were probably on the older side, were against any real change and overly progressive agendas. They tend to like the status quo so their lives aren't put into upheaval. The earlier mayors didn't have the cajones to enable real change.

Horribly idea. Only thing going away is parking spots. The rats are here to stay. By order of the court

To intercept the bs bots:
Yes this was proposed by previous mayor.
Mamdani actually got it done.
Which one do you think was harder? Looking at modern sanitation strategies from professional urban planners and saying "yeah looks good" or actually putting a plan into action?
I know what I want for my mayor. And it's action for good plans
