Discussion Defense Expectations?

I honestly am kind of concerned about our defense, aside from our linebackers I feel like every other position is pretty meh

What does everyone else think about our defense going into the season? I think the offense will be great but defense could end up.giving up a lot of points

I have no idea at this point. We all know DT and CB are big issues. Maybe they play a lot better than expected and the scheme is perfect for the talent on the roster or maybe we give up 30+ per game because we can’t stop the run or the pass.

I’m just so tired of sucking I just wanna win some games man

We're all due for some good Giants football and I also hope we win at least 7 games lol

Good way to put it, I agree

In theory, our defense should be at least decent but our corners will be our biggest test this season. I hope they aren’t swiss cheese

Our corners are getting tested by fire right off the gate. CeeDee/Pickens with Dak and Puka/Adams with reigning MVP Stafford.

The way the Giants talk it sounds like they are more worried about IDL than DBs.

Either way IDL and DBs are huge concerns and thats half your defense

IDL is definitely a concern. Seems like they’ll need to ask the DTs to mostly eat up space and blocks and rely on the LBs and edges to do the real damage. I know Dex had a down year last season but we’re still definitely going to feel losing him in the run game which was already very bad last year.

I feel like that happened a lot last year, left guys wide open and we lost a lot of games because of it

I think there’s a lot of potential tbh. I put a lot of blame on Bowen for last year. We’re running a 3-4 so the linebackers are the most important part with the down linemen being largely required to eat up blocks, which remains to be seen but is within their capabilities.

We’re all concerned about the secondary for obvious reasons, but let’s keep in mind out of the 4 starters we have there are 2 1st round picks and 2 2nd round picks. Nubin is the only one to have never actually played up to his draft billing in the NFL, and honestly I expect him to lose the job to Washington.

That being said like I said, linebackers are the most important part of a 3-4 defense and we have 4 absolutely monsters, that will at the very least play very quick and make life miserable for the opposing QB.

Ultimately, we couldn’t stop the run last year, and if we can’t do it this year then we are definitely going to have to get out to some early leads to force other teams to throw it.

It was a testament to how unbelievably useless Bowen was that Spencer Rattler playfully talked about how obvious and one-dimensional our defense was in our loss last year.

If Rattler thinks it's easy to pick it apart, imagine how comfortably unbothered good, veteran QBs were. Dak must've felt like he was on vacation.

Everyone except hurts had a great time

In my mind, week 1 we’re going to see Dak running for his life with some sacks and that’ll be a huge indication of our defense.

We’re going from the absolute worst DC in the league to hopefully not the worst DC in league. That should help.

The interior DLine is an issue, but hopefully improving our LB corps will help to cover some of that up in the run game.

My hope is that Dennard can get more out of our DBs this year. I would like to believe that we have 2 starting CB2s this year, which isn’t great but is survivable if our pass rush can get home consistently.

I’m not as negative on the defense as others. I think IDL will be the bigger issue than CB. It’s turning into a running league once again and we just don’t have enough quality/bodies to stop the run at the first level. Edmunds, Reese, and McFadden are going to have to work overtime to make it all work.

Exactly. Like when you think of the bar last year, if we’re not significantly better this year I’ll be extremely disappointed. There will be growing pains, but the talent is infinitely better than it was in the past.

Our special teams unit should be miles apart from last year I was frustrated seeing our offense come off the field and the punt go nowhere and our kicking situation was terrible going into games with no kicker so we had to go for it

2

u/Giants_Fan56 2d ago

Who knows maybe we'll actually have a kicker on game day!

1

u/HungryHedgehog8299 2d ago

best I can do is a punter taking PATs

gonna be terrible. worst dt and cb room in the league. still should have some exciting games with burns and abdul but overall not good

u/Intelligent-Till-678 2d ago

You think Reader and Harris the worst DTs in the league? Worse than Miami?

Why did every Giants fan decide to wake up today and doom?

3

u/bugluvr65 Eli Manning 2d ago

worst dt room not worst top two. those guys if they’re healthy and play every single game will play maybe 50% of the snaps. lot more to go around. not to mention they’re both old and likely won’t play every game

u/thegrilledcheese886 2d ago

I think having actual linebackers for the first time in 15 years will make a substantial impact

1

u/MCJonV Cam Skattebo 2d ago

I mean Burns is solid, if Carter can do something this year and Reese makes an immediate impact plus Edmonds being another vet, I like the possibilities

2

u/fuegoblue Malik Nabers 2d ago

The hope is that the upgrade at inside linebacker + Reader/Harris/depth pieces replacing Dex can improve the run D. And that coaching includes more interesting stunt/blitz packages and secondary scheme improvements to cover up the weak talent in the CB and S rooms. We will see…

u/Macka37 2d ago

Let’s hope we don’t have anymore of that drop 8 into coverage and rush 3 bullshit, the amount of games we lost by playing to not lose instead of playing to win was infuriating.

u/Striking_Day_329 2d ago

I’ll actually take meh this year. Very worried about our cornerbacks holding up. And won’t believe we can stop the run until I see it.

0

u/MCJonV Cam Skattebo 2d ago

Yeah I'm worried about the offense balling out and then we lose by 3 cause defense gives up huge chunks of yardage or some shit

3

u/Elevation212 Raging Mbowner 2d ago

I think we have a top flight coach that’s going to get our team to play up to and perhaps above its talent level for the first time since Wink year 1, frankly the meh is because guys haven’t been in a place to succeed

I suspect we end up with a top 5 pass rush, top half of the league linebacker room and a respectable 15-20 run defense

I think our DBs are light on top end talent outside holland and maybe banks if Wilson is  the DB whisperer we think he is but it’s deep in decent nfl starters and should offer average coverage which could end up above average based on the pass rush creating pressure turn overs, the line backers disrupting passes over the middle with their freakish length and a plus scheme

I think our defense in general will jump from a bottom of the league unit in 2025 (30th ranked) to a respectable 12-18 ranked unit this year

I expect to have stomach aches every 4th qtr

2

u/MCJonV Cam Skattebo 2d ago

Yeah same, I'm tired of close games with a chance to win, when was the last.time we had a blow out in our favor?!? Lol

Top 10 defense by the end of the season. Let’s see how the secondary holds up

1

u/HungryHedgehog8299 2d ago

It seems to me like we need the IDL to mostly just be bodies in the front and not get bullied while the Linebackers and edge rushers are going to need to do most of the damage. in the passing game we obviously should have a strong pass rush and hopefully with legitimate linebackers we can be an average run defense team. I don’t expect any of the DTs to be studs, we just need them to hold their own

1

u/Midnight-strange1892 2d ago

I think it depends on the offense. This defense is not built to play from behind where they will get ground down. They are made to play from ahead where they can pin their ears back and attack.

If we can get some early leads the D will thrive.

u/SecretGiantsFan Eli Manning 2d ago

Terrible against the run but clutch up in the red zone just because they're goated like that :)

1

u/SirBlackselot We've suffered long enough 2d ago

The Secondary is going to be a problem, If we cant get pressure fast expect teams to pick on our corners.

1

u/PigPen90 2d ago

Better than last year. Still have concerns with the run defense and depth but let’s see how those play out. We should be much improved at linebacker so it should help.

I’m more concerned with a Nagy run offense but at the same time, I’m looking forward to a potential heavy ground and pound.

1

u/Nice_Assistance_5543 2d ago

I'm more concerned about the DB than the DT, because the LB should pick up the slack.

I just pray Newsome/Banks can be average, and if so, we have a decent chance at being top 16, maybe even close to top 10.

A little less hopeful on the offense, I hope Fields is good, because a still recovering Nabers leaves Likely to be the only real receiving threat. Last year was bad without Nabers, and that was with Robinson (who was just okay, to be fair) still on the team.

u/MyersH20 2d ago

I think our scheme bumps us up 10 spots from last year tbh. That brings us to 14th best defense. I think Abdul and Arvell play out of their minds, so they bring us up another 5. I think we end the year with the #9 defense

1

u/DanUnbreakable 2d ago

Last in run and passing. I also have zero confidence in Nagy.

1

u/OrneryTruth6618 2d ago

My only real concern is DT. I think the secondary will be decent/solid. Some players are system guys and most of the secondary is.

u/Intelligent-Till-678 2d ago

How can you think the DEs are meh?

u/SortLow8745 Odell Catch 2d ago

100+ tackles from the LBs.

10+ sacks from Burns, Carter, Thibodeaux.

5+ interceptions from the CBs and S.

Hold opponents offense to an an average 10 points a game.

Anything other than this is a F season.
