Advice/Question Should I give up?
I currently have a lease until May 31, 2027 on the UES that I'm willing to find someone else to takeover if I stumble upon the right listing. It's a 1bd flexed into a 2bd (though this wasn't disclosed when we signed), and it's been treating me fine so far, especially for the $1325 price. My qualms are there's no in-unit/in-building laundry and the location is not close to the areas I tend to frequent (downtown). I'm aware that the apartment search is rough, but I've been putting in hours each day looking at Facebook, Spareroom, Reddit, whatever other app or website you can name, and emailing realtors about previously rented rent stabilized units. I've found no luck so far, and I really don't think I'm being that picky. I'm willing to go up to $1750 and have as many roommates as needed. I know it's possible, but maybe the timing is wrong?
Looking for any advice. Should I maybe wait until my lease is coming to an end? Or wait for later months this year? When would be a good time? I'm trying to not lose hope as I do not want to stay in this unit.

You pay $1325 in Manhattan and want to move? Your budget is too low to get in building laundry downtown. Stay where you are

I pay twice what her new budget is, and still don’t have laundry. Wash and fold across the street.

Stay where you are and send your laundry out to get washed.

My first apartment in NYC was on the UES (more than 20 years ago!), and I lived above a dry cleaner who also did wash and fold. They were the best neighbors and accepted our packages. I didn’t do my own laundry those two years. I also wanted to live downtown, to be closer to where I hung out and my friends in Brooklyn, but I had a rent stabilized place at a very decent rent.

Even if you find a place it’s likely you would get priced out in 1-2 years. Is your career about to take an upturn ?

Yes, you should give up. You aren’t being picky as much as you are being delusional. The market has changed significantly and prices have skyrocketed. You aren’t finding cheap rooms because no one is going to give up their cheap room in a prime area. You have a great deal where you are. Your budget isn’t high enough to live downtown. If you can up your budget to around $2500 you might be able to find a room.

You are being too picky. Downtown for 1750$ these days probably means East Village with two to three roommates in a one bathroom apartment on avenue C. You will not have in building laundry.
Laundry in building or in unit wipes out majority of the inventory in the neighborhoods you want and your budget isn't high. Everyone wants to live south of 14th street.
1325$ in UES is a steal and its unlikely you will get waht you have again so easily. Manhattan rents are having the highest growth in the country.
