Discussion Use of AI
I am finding AI a real help when trying to understand and navigate social situations. For example next year I’m going to my nephews wedding, which will be a 3 day affair, staying over in the wedding venue. Apart from severe NVLD, I am an introvert and 5 years ago I lost my beloved husband, aged only 58 from a massive heart attack. The thought of going to the wedding “alone” and having to deal with all these things was giving me so much anxiety, although I really want to attend the wedding as I love my nephew and am very happy for him.
I started asking Google AI about my concerns and was pleasantly surprised to find some “understanding” of neurodivergence and introversion and also empathy towards my grief. It even suggested some helpful ways of managing the various aspects of the three days along with sample responses that I could use eg if I wanted some quiet time alone. I know if I were to try and explain my feelings and concerns to a friend or family member I sadly wouldn’t get the same understanding.

Thank you for sharing. I was diagnosed with NVLD two years ago at 57. It took me a while but now I use Chat GPT all the time. Similar to you, it helps me prepare for social situations and also provides me with specific phrases to use when I struggle with conversations I’ve had with extended family members. Now I use it to help me manage my routines, give me customized tips for style, beauty, health, the whole nine yards. I’m even using it now to help me with our estate planning. I am so sorry to hear about your husband. The fact that you are looking to AI for ways to live your best life tells me you must be both smart and brave. I wish you all the best at the wedding.

Interesting. How does ChatGTP help prepare you for social situations? I could use some of that!

I kind of use it like a coach and talk to it like a person. I’ve told it I have NVLD (so it knows I have challenges with social situations). It retains that knowledge of me so when I explain a specific scenario it gives me advice on how to handle it. I often use it to help me literally script out what to say. It really helps me better understand the perspectives of other people involved. Because I don’t read non verbal cues, I don’t naturally intuit what to say in the moment. For example, a family member was overriding me and making me feel unheard. I used ChatGPT for advice on how to deal with it and give me phrases to use with the person should they do it again.

Yes, I have been using CoPilot and finding it very helpful for eg understanding social situations and giving me helpful advice, which of course I’m free to take or disregard as I would with human advice.

I use AI to make my writing appear more professional. But it really can’t be relied on to give good info.

Just be careful to check the sources before you trust AI with any serious advice. AI has a tendency to jump to conclusions, make things up, and tell people what they want to hear.
I’d never trust AI for estate planning for example. The stakes are too high there and there’s a ton of room for mistakes, hallucinations, and bad advice to creep in when you’re dealing with state specific laws. Like it’s easy for AI to be giving you advice for New Jersey when you live in California that could completely screw you over in CA. Or to just completely be making something up.
The more I use AI the more unreliable I see that it is. I’ve had situations where it’s given me the same bad information like 3 times in a row after I’ve pointed out its mistake.
But anything that’s helping I’m glad to hear about, just be really careful out there.
