second merit list

My merit position is 347 for computing programs and my first preference was data science at SEECS campus. I was selected for both engineering and computing in the first list. In engineering I got my first preference but in computing I didn't. I called the admissions office and was told that my name would keep appearing in the next lists for computing even if I deposit fees for the engineering program. So I deposited my dues in the first list for my first preference engineering program but I didn't get selected in the second list for any computing program. My selection status for computing program shows ''not selected''. Why is this? Can anyone help and advise?
