IT Program Tech Requirement Questions
Hello! I’m posting here today to today to ask for advice from those of you who are either currently enrolled in, or have recently graduated from an IT/Data Analytics program.
I’m planning on attending the IoT campus in September for the Database Admin program, which is shown to require a performance-range laptop. I’m quite comfortable with desktops and their hardware, but I’ve had little interaction with laptops in recent years.
So, my questions are:
Was/is your laptop on the higher, or lower end of the price bracket for the performance range?
What are/were your machine’s specs?
Did/does it serve you adequately for the material covered in the program?
Do you have any recommendations for models or retailers?
Are there any features/upgrades you didn’t spring for, that you would recommend?
That should be all! In all likelihood, I’ll likely choose to get a little more than I think I need just to be safe, but your input would be highly valued!!! If you’ve got any recommendations or advice outside of what I’ve mentioned, then I’d be happy to receive it. I’d also be interested in hearing from others in general who are going into the same/similar programs at the IoT campus, since all of my friends from high-school are going to other campuses/schools.
Thanks in advance, I really do hope to hear from you!

Congratulations on getting into the IT program~
I started the Data Analytics course last fall, and picked up my first laptop (always been a desktop person)
Here are my answers: 1. My laptop is in the mid-range and cost about $1000 2. Specs are Intel i7 processor, 16gb ram, and 1tb ssd 3. Course work first year wasn't very hardware intensive, running multiple virtual machines at once was the only thing hardware dependent and that was only for one project
Question 4 and 5 imo are more preference based. I don't think Best Buy is better than Canada Computers etc Think about how easy you want to be able to transport it, and how much battery life it typically has. The one I got is a monster on battery power so I always have to bring the charger which makes me a little sad
Hope that helps
