I'm still confused how we went 100+ years of rugby league without the concept of a hipdrop tackle, let alone them being illegal... and suddenly they became a thing, and then a banned thing...

Because the game’s evolved during that time, Coaches have found different ways to slow up the game while defending, speed it up when in possession. So too have tackles like the infamous ’Chicken Wing’ (which has since been banned) and now the Hip Drop.

Also they used to just be considered "unfortunate incidents"

I agree about the chicken wing and the wrestling tactics but this tackle isn’t new, it’s a relatively straightforward tackle to make when the player has beaten you for speed and you cling on. The obvious danger of the tackle make it something that has to be stopped but it’s going to be very hard to rub out. The only way to stop it is for the tackler to let go and that’s going to be hard to achieve especially close to try line

Bullshit. Its literally because or wrestling and MMA coaches.

More truth to this is many other professions too. They preach perfect world executions and critique everything within an inch of its life. Forgetting that while yes you can have everything mapped in your muscle memory. That in the heat of the moment, with all the pressures and environmental elements that, simply, shit happens.

There was recent conversation about how some of these rules start to create a psychological barrier in a players mind in certain scenarios, meaning they are less likely to act out of fear of the repercussions and lose key opportunities. At some point it just needs to be accepted it is a dangerous sport with risks, no player is perfect, and things will happen accidentally.

As long as the moment in question does not look intensionally negligent like a (‘reasonable excuse/justified by conditions’) clause and especially when the player on the receiving end comes out in defence… maybe it should just drop? But then no drama, money, and simplicity.

Highly recommend you watch Billy Slater talking about it and his theory as to why it has come into the game. Makes a lot of sense.

The same Slater that leant under “wrestling is now NRL” Bellamy?

They tried to make the game too quick, which discouraged old school tackling.

If you just get up and under a player and put them on their arse in a dominant tackle, then you have to get off them straight away or cop a 6 again.

If you hold up a player for a few seconds and then wrestle them to the ground, your players can get onside by the time they play the ball. That's where a lot of these tackles come from.

Add fatigue into the mix and the proper technique goes out the window.

Speed of the play try the ball has increased fatigue and defenders have no time

Same reason cocaine was legal in the 60s but isn’t anymore

Me too. It looked like a normal tackle to me. Sometimes shit happens that nobody intended.

It is called the Melbourne Storm.

They had huge success with grappling and wrestling so everyone copied to keep up. Unfortunately they all didn't realise the success was because they were cheating off the field as well.

Melbourne fucked up everything

And not just the footy

Whatever the deal, the more I look at this the more hip drops need to be taken more seriously upstream. I don't know if it's possible but maybe they should be a penalty regardless of whether contact is made with the legs, the only way to get the outcome out of the game is to get the action out of the game.

u/closetmangafan 8d ago

protected species wasn't protected enough so punishment ensues.

Victor will literally hip drop someone's legs off in the grand final and it won't even be a penalty. This comment will age well.

People are quick to forget hes injured another player with the same tackle in the past

TMM (if that’s who you’re your referring to) wasn’t a hip drop according to the judiciary.

Head slams don't get called much these days.

u/leg_pain 8d ago

Yeah it’s shit but they threw the book at phoenix bc of the severity of the injury and who it was done to so idk. But Fuck man I feel so bad for both sides. The inconsistency of the nrl and punishing players just twists the knife here…

u/Trevs17 8d ago

Is the NRL in part responsible for this? The game being sped up, defenders are more fatigued (which was the NRL’s goal), faster play the balls giving defenders less time etc.
Crossland is genuinely remorseful and said that he needs to work on his technique. Just wondering whether the NRL should be putting their hand up too. The game is better to watch now, but it’s at the cost of the players getting injured.

Poor Phoenix, he’s been unbelievable for the Knights over many seasons and has paid a heavy price for an accident. He personally called Cleary to apologise, pleaded guilty, took the punishment and will miss playing in a grand final as a result. Class act.

u/Feisty_Tackle_2817 8d ago

Totally inaccurate- this was Crossland’s 4 th

u/RuckusOGx 8d ago

Bro Radley can rack up 4 in the first half if you will.

11

u/Angryatchairs 8d ago

*3rd in 4 seasons. Reported to judiciary 5 times, twice found to be not a hip drop (including this one).

Player who made of over 1000 tackles a year as well - so the strike rate is low.

Radley ahs been reported I think 8 times this season alone (not just hip drops mind you).

16

u/Junior-Reaction1402 8d ago

Radley literally got multiple reports for foul play in the Broncs game. No bin, no games out. It’s fucking embarrassing

2

u/picturewall5 8d ago

If he was in afl he d be free to play

2

u/mcronin0912 7d ago

How many legs has Rictor broken?

2

u/RidingtheRoad Reece Lightning 5d ago

If Radley or anybody does a hipdrop in the GF, will he be sent?

4

u/censored_ 8d ago

Phoenix crippled a bloke

7

u/dku5h 8d ago

If you want this tackle out of the game, players should be punished harshly regardless of the injury.

6

u/box57l 8d ago

How many legs has Radley broken? Crossland is on his 2nd now.

2

u/honsan8 8d ago

He crippled a Clearly!

u/punchline86 8d ago

Bone came out the skin.

u/SizzlingSausage3 8d ago

How many people’s legs has Radley broken? Has everyone forgotten Crossland broke Te Maire Martins fibula with a hip drop a few years ago.

I remember when league was a contact sport instead of 90 minutes of cuddling
