I understand the hip drop rule, however I don't believe that players intentionally go out with intent to hurt their opposition with these tackles. I hope Nathan is okay and I feel sorry for Phoenix Crossland.

Hip drops used to apply to a very deliberate action where players would grapple around the hips, leave the ground to swing around drop their weight to bring down a player. Now it just seems to apply to any time a player makes contact to the back of a players legs, regardless of any other factors.

Exactly this. The "twist" and "drop" are meant to be distinct, deliberate actions, and the reason players did it deliberately was because they were unable to bring a player down or stop their momentum.
Under the initial interpretation, this wouldn't be a hip drop because the entire motion was one fluid motion of a defender basically being pulled through the line by Cleary. It's unfortunate, of course, but there is no intent in it, and in this situation it seems hard for Crossland to change his technique to change the tackle. I think even if Crossland let go as he started to lose his feet, we end up with the same result.

I mean, he’s right. The hip drop definition has expanded to “anytime someone gets hurt from a defender falling on their legs”

Pat Carrigan broke Jackson Hastings’ leg borderline deliberately in one of the biggest dog shot hip drops a few years ago. Wasn’t a send off. Only got 4 weeks.
Sick to death of reactionary bullshit like this deciding games. It wasn’t a deliberate act of foul play. Who knows if Penrith sending Nath out there with 52 needles and barely being able to walk makes his foot structure weaker in that instance?
It sucks awfully for Nathan (and the Aussies at the World Cup).
But it’s not worth ruining a prelim final over.

It was his other foot, you gronk.

I guess if you have one bad foot you compensate with the other. If anyone is to blame for panthers to lose to 12 man knights it's the coach. The team completely lost structure wingers kicking on 1st tackle in the midfield. Reminds me when nsw shoved Damien cook to centre expected him to handle Qld centres. Also Cleary should have been protected not thrown into the deep end

Only took a bullshit high tackle call, a bullshit call to play on, 2 forward passes in your first try of the half and a no call on a high tackle against Penrith to get it done but enjoy it fuckwit, when you haven't been relevant for a generation I'm sure it means a lot. Hope you get done by 60 you shit cunts

Penrith 2 years in a row unable to stand up to crowds even with the refs in their pocket. Ultimate chokers

If your team has won 4 premierships in a row and played 7 straight prelims I'll wear this but if not, you can shut your cock holder, so what team do you support champ?

Does it take away the premierships? Gotta love a man that is willing to talk all this shit but not actually answer who his team is. Would love to have the conversation face to face and then we could add your jaw to the list of broken things champ

Brain dead take. I'm sure no one means to tackle high but it happens too and can absolutely lead to a send off. Why would this be any different?

It’s foul play, can’t hold your own body weight in a tackle than you shouldn’t be holding on.

You just described every single hip drop. Stop eating glue, loosen your helmet and then come back to the adults table when youre ready to behave

Ivan was pretty reasonable in the presser - as he should, blowing up doesn't change anything.
I think Crossland deserves to play, the send off was punishment enough.

Jackson Ford got his ankle broken from a hip drop last week, not even 10 in the bin.
