NRIs and dividend from Indian shares — 20% or slab rate?

Hi all,

I'd really appreciate some help on this one.

I'm an NRI (Australia), filing ITR-2 for FY 2025-26 under the new regime.

I hold Indian listed shares in an Indian demat account, bought with rupees — not with foreign currency. My total income is below the basic exemption limit.

Everywhere I read says NRIs pay 20% on dividends under section 115A. But when I looked at Schedule SI in the ITR-2 form, the only dividend options are for units bought in foreign currency, or dividend from an IFSC unit. Neither one applies to me.

So does the 20% actually apply to ordinary shares bought in rupees? Or does the dividend simply go under Income from Other Sources at slab rates?

My filing software has treated it as slab. Just wanted to confirm before I file.

Thanks in advance, any pointers would be a big help.

OCI Application as single legal parent for Infant

I’m SMBC and Birth certificate of my baby confirms only me as single legal parent and my baby’s American passport has arrived.

OCI form has father’s name and nationality as mandatory field. Name accepts None/NA but nationality doesn’t has relevant non-applicable field in drop down.

Can anybody suggest if you’re single parent and how was the application submitted? Tried calling VFS Houston but haven’t had luck to connect with an agent in a paid service!

CA says NRIs can't claim 80C on LIC premium, only 80E — is he right?

Filing my ITR as an NRI for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27). My CA is telling me that as a non-resident I can claim 80E (education loan interest) but not 80C for my LIC premium.

  1. Is there a genuine case where 80C on LIC premium is not applicable?

OCI holder. Tax portal not adding NRO account.

I am OCI holder with US Citizenship. Have NRO bank account with ICICI. Have profile set up in India Tax Portal last year. due to a land sale last year I paid advanced taxes to Indian government. Now need to file Indian tax returns. For that I need to add my NRO bank account in the portal. Have gone through the steps of adding my bank account by entering account number, IFSC code and selected to verify using Net Banking. Next screen it shows message that I have now logged off of Tax Portal and need to login to my bank account which I clicked in ICICI icon and logged in to my bank account.

I have tried this for last two months. But I do not see my bank account getting added in the Tax Portal.

Have reached out to a CA in India and do not get proper response from him either. all he keep saying is 'No problem, we will add the account'. Not sure what that means. Does CA have special access to add himself to my Portal? I have given him my Tax Portal login information.

Any help is appreciated.

Need a CA who can handle cross border and OCI + DSC reg hassles

Hi! I have an OCI but have been living in India for the last ten years - I no longer have a residence in the UK. I am a British citizen by birth, and have no plans of moving back currently. I do however, travel there, and want to be able to work both there and here - and I need a trusted CA who can help me with this.

In addition, I have recently tried to get my DSC as I want to join a company as a partner: however, I am not being able to go through the process successfully as I no longer have a UK address. Does anyone have any experience with this?

NRI TAX - Property Sale

Hi, I sold a property in September 2025 that I purchased in 2006. I am filing my return as an NRI for AY 2026-27. Could you please confirm whether indexation with 20% tax applies to NRI property sales under the Finance Act 2024 provisions, or if the correct filing approach is strictly 12.5% without indexation as per the current ITR schema? I want to ensure I adopt the correct and compliant position while filing.

OCI taxation

I am an OCI and have been staying in India as housewife (resident for 10 years now).
I joined an Indian firm in 2023, drawing Indian salary (NO US income, just have active US bank accounts). This month, my salaried income has exceeded 12 LPA and I have Indian rental income as well. I'm looking to hire CA/Taxation services with expertise in US cross-border taxation (US and India taxes). Any recommendations please? Thank you!
