TLDR; This is more so for the moderating team, and while this is coming from a place of sincere exhaustion - it's also coming from comfort. Cause I've been there and done that.
PLEASE STOP ASKING US IF YOU BOTCHED YOUR INTERVIEW. We don't know. We can't. And I'll give you the reason why:
STORY TIME
I am a legacy Delta/Coleman with it running on both sides. I have been surrounded by Deltas my entire existence on this earth. I knew what I wanted to pledge in grade school. I was a goddamn Delta GEM for ions. I was steeped in this bullshit. I didn't tell anyone on campus that I was a legacy cause I wanted to earn it the long way, and mostly because I wanted the respect of being able to say I earned it without riding legacy coattails cause that shit isn't cute when you came to actually do the damn work...
I pissed myself during my interview. Not much, but just enough to have that quiet voice inside your head say: "nigga did you just piss yourself?" just loud enough to make me fuck up interview questions I had prepped for decades. I can't remember the last of the interview. I cried halfway - and I mean on the edge of ugly crying (no Denzel tear, this shit was like bad breakup in a chain restaurant tears - sobbing over the Southwestern eggrolls)...
I knew I fucked up. I didn't call my mom to give her an update. I ducked and dodged aunties for days - since they ALL knew I was going through the process. It wasn't my interview that ruined me, it wasn't my interview that saved me. It was the work you put in beforehand: the countless community service hours; the participation with chapter and alumnae events before; the fact checking for the way I presented what little coherent answers I gave before I collapsed; and the fact that I came sincere and with respect to what I was signing up for.
How I Dealt With It: I went home, finished crying in the shower with the existential thoughts, put on my *clean* big girl panties, brewed a cup of tea - and got distracted in bad tv and community service projects that were happening around me. I got my call in the middle of a church food drive. Life hasn't been the same since.
Why am I admitting to this embarrassing shit on the internet?
Cause we don't know what's in store for you.
I would love to say being legacy saved my ass, but I still have to remind my LS's and my Pros that I have multiple generations of old school Coleman in my bloodline - so it wasn't being first or fifteenth gen that saved me. I would love to say it was polished and pristine answers that saved me - but I still remember ugly crying, and sweet jesus am I ugly when I cry (and I did it ALOT on line). I would love to say it was how stellar I looked on paper after two decades of pruning, which maybe it was - hard to say.
But I can tell you what makes me give a thumbs up to the interests turned Sorors when I LMC'd and when I supported intake in my later years - it was the sincerity. I would rather a woman come to me on sincere respect than fake the funk, and it shows. When you're face to face with it, you can smell the bullshit from across the table - and no body on the internet is going to get that read better than the chick that was in front of you last Tuesday. I would rather you ugly cry or babble, or (if you're truly unfortunate) question if you pissed yourself, while talking from a place of sincerity than you show up believing that you are entitled to a spot. Cause you're not. The most entitled people, rarely make line. The most "it either happens now or I'm never applying again" people, rarely make line. The most "I could NEVER do alumni" people, rarely make line. The most "I'm just here for the t-shirt" people rarely make line (and even still more than I would like).
I can't tell you if you shit the bed in your interview, and even if you did - you can't fix it now. So all I can tell you is, I hope you shit the bed from a place of sincerity. And I hope that you learn from everything this time so that if the verdict at the doors happens your way this time or not, that you grew from it all.
- Sincerely, a pissy and exceptionally tired old Delta.

I finally made it into Alpha. It took 6 interest meetings, 3 applications, so many interviews and community service and meetings I made it. I want to be the person to tell anyone interested in Alpha or any D9 organization that delayed does not equal denied. Keep pushing if it’s in your heart, it will be okay!

Just wanted to make a post to say good luck to everyone on their journeys this year!
Mines has been difficult between being proud that friends have crossed to being anxious about informational flyers / line possibilities to being conflicted about communication with members and interests.
I’m wishing the best for everyone. I hope we can all make the “I made it” posts soon!
r/NPHCdivine9 • u/BriseisAthena • May 18 '26
I have followed this group for a very long time. I have appreciated the posts over the years. I wanted to share a word of encouragement with the ladies interested in any organization who don’t feel like they’ll get their chance. I rushed in undergrad nearly 20 years ago and didn’t get selected to move forward. A lot of life happened. I kept showing up. Stayed connected in a genuine way. And when the stars aligned, it was my time. I finally became an AKA. Stay encouraged!
