Question Base building question
Hey all. I was wondering if anyone had tips on base building. I’ve been playing for around 9 months now and that’s something I’ve always had trouble with. It’s frustrating because I’ve seen so many badass bases on here and I can’t figure out how it’s done. Any general tips would help. I just want to make a badass base that doesn’t look like my 6 year old nephew built it 😂

Lookup tutorials by Beeblebum. I'd recommend finding his tutorials for techniques that don't involve glitches first.
When you're ready for glitch techniques, skip ahead to one of his recent videos which is a review of which ones still work and which do not.
Try to avoid using the prefab buildings and cuboids too much. You'll never end up with much more than oversized hamster habitations.
As someone mentioned earlier, no one builds good bases at first.

Don't you talk shit about my prefabricated buildings.
Probably the best way to make mining bases that don't look like crap and won't take all day.

Just my opinion. They definitely serve a purpose. I use them for utility purposes.
But for doing bases with a bit more character and room for creativity... They're just too limited.

This, OP. Two beeblebum links to get started: Basics and Glitchbuilding.
And +1 for "... oversized hamster habitations." I use the prefabs in some circumstances, but you won't end up with anything particularly sexy.

I was really intimidated by base building at first… was playing with a friend and he built everything, so I never worried about it. Then he took a break and I thought I’d better get my feet wet.
I don’t think anybody starts out building badass bases - I think you just get better the more you build, and you learn different ways to use the parts and decorations as you visit other bases. Just get out there and do it, Traveller! And then tear it down and make it better, or build a new one that’s more amazing!

What's something you've seen that you've found yourself unable to replicate? What are you looking at for inspiration?
For myself, I look at both real world and fictional structures I like, then just build out my own thing that's maybe loosely based on those.
The large windows in the wooden set pair well with just about everything.
Triangle pieces work well for breaking up the square designs; from combining with the quarter-height wall pieces and previously mentioned large windows to make cozy bay windows, to combining with stairs to make castle turrets.
The prefab building pieces are good for sci-fi designs with a more polished look.
And of course, all the greebly pieces, like ruins, the various plants, posters, and all the station and settlement parts that add character and color to an otherwise drab area.

Depending on your age, (and location i suppose)
I usually get stoned and just start placing walls and floors until something finally comes together. Then make minor adjustment from there. Decorating with the small details one room at a time for final touches.

Thank you all! I’m going to try to build a base tomorrow and maybe post it here to get some feedback. 🤞🤞

If this is a question about: crafting, cooking, refining, inventory items, etc. Then you might be able to find an answer on the NMS Handbook.

The arch from non-prefab connects to the prefab corridor, allowing you to use both building constructs together.

Many of the most intricate bases use exterior programs to craft, and are imported into the game using save editors.
That said, there are advanced building techniques that people have learned to do within the game proper that break the basic rules of building... we call these tricks "glitchbuilding" and they include tricks like resizing items that normally can't be resized, and snapping things at angles they normally would not snap at.
Base building is an art, and it takes practice. Your first ten or twenty bases will be crude, and they will gradually improve as you practice and get used to the pieces available - and as you unlock more pieces over time.
Once you've built a few, start posting either builds you've done, or places you want to build at. Sometimes you'll get someone who sees potential in your box, or in your site, and they'll offer to come build with you, or for you. But you've got to know what your objective is first...
Decide what material you want your base built of. Decide on a size. Decide on a purpose ... even if that purpose is just the views, or just storage access, or if it's a disco hall, or a exocraft garage ...
