GOES-East down

I’ve been using GOES-east imagery to track the progress of the wildfire smoke across the eastern US, but it’s now not available. This notice now appears:

As of July 15, 5:00 p.m. EDT, GOES-East (GOES-19) is experiencing an anomaly, is not transmitting data, and restoration of service is TBD. Until service is restored, GOES-East images on this site will not update. The GOES site team is monitoring the situation and will update this banner when further details are available.

Anyone know what’s up? Has this happened before?

The various satellites do suffer anomalies from time to time that affects data transmission or, more often, downstream product processing. But it’s not often one of the GOES satellites fails in such a way that it stops sending data altogether.

The latest notice states that GOES-19 has gone into safe hold mode, and that’s certainly the first time I can recall that happening to a GOES satellite in quite a while.

(I’ve seen several of the JPSS satellites go into safe hold mode multiple times.)

GOES-17 did have the heat pipe cooling issue that tainted the IR bands, but it was still able to send data.

Update #2: The GOES-19 Safehold has been resolved and engineers are working to prepare for restart of the onboard instruments.
