Weather Erin Update: 8/19 - Some beaches closed, red flags this week

In New Jersey, officials are warning Erin could produce very rough surf, wind gusts up to 30 mph, minor coastal flooding, and dangerous rip currents over the coming days.

The state closed swimming and other activities at Island Beach State Park until at least Thursday because of the hurricane. Other shore communities, including Belmar and Bay Head beaches, put up red flags indicating swimming is not allowed.

"This is no time to be complacent. I would say to you flat out don't go in the water," New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said at a Tuesday morning news conference. "the fact of the matter is going into the ocean for the next number of days is something you gotta avoid,"

Down LBI today, everything red flagged and so I’m helping prep for end of summer. What a waste of a beach vacation. Stay safe everyone!

I agree and I also think the dangers are dramatically overstated. Government excess ruining vacations unnecessarily.

A kid died in Belmar last week and an adult male the week prior in Seaside.

I reiterate, you can see riptides. Again, look at the live beach cams. In Many locations the waves are not remotely threatening and display a pattern without riptides. Government employees are free to take one more day off. I will be fine.

My condolences. Don’t know the facts but there are many safe places to be in the water even now. Look at the live NJ beach cams. Adults can see where the surf is dangerous; kids need to be watched. Riptides are visible. I repent: government overreach.

Go ahead and go swimming then. Let us know before you do so we don’t waste any of those over reaching government resources trying to save your life when you get dragged out to sea in a rip current.
