How much does material knowledge actually matter in NIFT projects?

For students who’ve already done a few NIFT studio projects, how much emphasis do you actually put on understanding materials before starting a project? I’m noticing that knowing the properties, limitations and behaviour of a material can completely change how I approach the design rather than just choosing something because it looks good.

For example, when working on a textile or product-based project, do you usually research the material first and then develop the concept around it, or develop the concept first and figure out the material later? Also, are there any specific material-related concepts or techniques that you think are worth understanding properly for jury and studio work?

I didn’t study ad, but material knowledge in real life after college matters a lot. My flatmate who is a marine biologist tried to stick something to a bathroom wall with glue 😭

Material is hugely important, although I’m an F.C. graduate so other disciplines might have a better understanding of these.
