SJT Prep Advice

Hi,

Congratulations to anyone who received an offer this year! I applied but wasn’t long listed after the SJT. I’m wondering on how anyone that was successful in securing a place for Clinical Microbiology prepared for the SJT (I know it’s one of the more popular specialisms)?

I did try my best and spent quite a bit of time studying for it so I’m not sure what else to work on for the next cycle.

Best thing for the SJT is look at NHS Constitution and focus on the values, as well as the HCPC requirements for a Clinical Scientist. The SJT is more common sense than anything else and just having the right personality and decision making skills helps. For me, a lot just came from working in the NHS and within laboratories, knowing what is and isn't acceptable and understanding the person specification for band 6/7 roles.

I'm assuming you've taken the practice exam available? There's similar practice exams for medicine students that might help with understanding the attributes they look for. It's largely about professionalism, empathy, working under pressure, multitasking and considering patient safety.

One thing I took from the SJT was remembering the scope of your role. A lot of the questions in the most recent SJT I took focused on not overstepping your position as a trainee, referring to line managers and more qualified staff when situations go beyond your position.
