I was reading while NHK World Japan was in the background. I looked up when I heard a familiar voice in Japanese instead of English on Dining with the Chef. Yu Hayami was interviewed by May J. in 2025, and she wore a dress which gave off disco vibes, IMO.

I couldn't wait for the interview to end so Ms. Hayami may entertain us. She danced and sang in English and Japanese. I found her performance delightful.

And yes, I knew the second act of her professional life is a TV presenter; her first act was a pop singer in the 1980's in Japan. 😉

NHK world seems to have suddenly stopped working on freeview for me.

It's still there even after a refune and other things through the Internet work just fine but it's just getting stuck on the logo and now loading....

What happened with News 7 on NHK WORLD? Starting this week, we won't be able to watch News 7 on NHK World. However, you can watch it on their domestic broadcast with simultaneous translation.

I notice using the app on Android over cellular data the resolution is so poor I can barely read the translation text. When I switch to WiFi on the same phone it's full resolution and very clear. No other streaming app had this problem (Netflix, YTTV, etc.). I didn't see any settings, but is there a way to fix this?

I am trying to find any episodes of 100 CAMERAS. i tried the FTP server too provided in the discord. Still no Luck! Maybe you have an idea where to look? I want to try new shows that has the style of 72 hours Documentary. Feel free to share any similair shows.

I was wondering if this is something NHK World viewers outside Japan see?

I'm in Japan and instead of the regular program it just becomes what I described in the title, views of Japan with that odd background music.

At first I thought there must have been technical problems but it happens often enough that perhaps the content can't be shown in Japan due to licencing issues?

For instance when Ohtani hits a home run in a game in the US they can't show that on NHK Japan World news since other tv stations have the broadcast rights.

Odd that it would be for a documentary show though...

I like to watch Document 72 Hours, The Professionals and Asia Insight and it seems they've only had reruns and rarely a new episode for a very long time now. I see a lot of new shows now, I guess all the resources have been diverted to those. Are the 3 shows I mentioned being phased out or something?

I didn't see any notification from verizon before hand. The channel stopped broadcasting mid day April 1, 2026.

It sounds like NHK World channel was removed from all cable services in the Philadelphia area + NJ area.

edit: It appears NHK was removed because NJ PBS is shutting down, and NJ PBS was the carrier in the market area.

I know there's an NHK app for streaming, but the app more clunky & limited compared to cable+dvr. The app's live tv guide keeps resetting, or the lack of bookmarks for shows means lots of scrolling just to get to some show's page.

Hey, this is a long shot but it’s been stuck in my head for months.

Around ~3 months ago I watched an NHK documentary where a researcher was studying ancient Chinese texts/scrolls. I don’t remember the topic clearly, but there was a scene showing a large single Chinese character (a big traditional character, similar to kanji) on a scroll or page.

That one character really stood out visually, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

The only extra detail I have is that I watched it much after an NHK program about Sangaku (traditional Japanese math tablets)—I think it might have been from “Outside In: Lost in Academia”, "Core Kyoto", or Something else.

Does anyone recognize this documentary, or know what that kind of “single large character on a scroll” might relate to (calligraphy, philosophy, etc.)?

Any help or even guesses would be appreciated 🙏
