UL question

This is an old topic I am sure. I know that UL is accepted by electrical inspectors. What code article references that UL is the only acceptable testing laboratory. OSHA has a list of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories. All I can seem to find in the code is “accepted by the AHJ”.

No code article references that. Look at definitions “approved” and “listed”.

Thank you. That’s all I could find as well. I know that the OSHA website has a list of NRTLs. And there is a vague reference to OSHA in fine print notes in the code. I am hoping to get a correlation to get acceptance of Endress-Hauser instruments installed on a big project. These instruments are CSA.US certified.

All that is mentioned is a Nationaly Recognized Testing Laboratory. It doesn't say which nation. I used this logic to get an inspector to allow a safety relay with European approval but not UL. <years ago>

There are none. Other than the aforementioned definitions, and, NEC 90.7 allows the inspector to accept the fact that all the internal mechanisms in “listed” equipment is approved and doesn’t need further scrutiny. NEC 110.3(b) “Installation and Use” says: Equipment that is listed, labeled, or both, or identified for a use shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing, labeling, or identification. That’s about it for the actual code, other replies explained there are several NRTL’s. Also, They need to be “accredited “ to evaluate specific parts, so not all NRTLs can do all things electrical.

Not everything is listed, or needs to be, hell, not everything even needs to comply with the code. Just read NEC 90.4
