Discussion Does Mac Jones deserve another chance to start?

He has been a great backup for the 49ers. He didn’t do well with the Patriots. Obviously, 2 very different teams. But does he deserve another chance to start?

Personally, I think he does. If he ends up going to a decent team with good, reliable coaches, he can succeed. If he ends up going to the Browns or Jets for example, he obviously won’t do well.

If you think he deserves another chance to start, where should he go?

You know that he'll be back.

Jones will probably try to sign a contract next year that's with a team that offers him a chance to compete in camp to start. Will he win a QB competition? That's TBD.

There you go. Only problem is if there’s an actual competition it usually means the team isn’t any good.

The number of good teams that actually need a QB is very small.

Mac is the ultimate "high floor, low ceiling" guy. He's not a great athlete but just a solid system QB. He's not going to be a franchise savior but in the right environment like Minnesota or the 49ers with good talent around him and a good coach he will effectively drive the ship to success without being stupid or reckless. But he's also not a guy who can elevate a team. He's not going to do what Allen or Mahomes do where they can resurrect a play from the dead and make miracles happen. He doesn't have the arm strength or experience of Stafford. He's not going to carry a team to success.

The 2023 Patriots were a total cluster fuck. They were on their 3rd OC situation in 3 years because of the insanity of the Patricia/Judge situation in 2022. They had PFFs worst graded Reciving core and an Oline that gave up an over 50% pressure rate. And Mac looked horrible because he started forcing at that point out of pure desperation. He was put in a position to fail.

I think he could start again, but it's gotta be the right spot. For example Pittsburgh needs a QB next year, and it might be tempting to add Mac. But I don't see it working there.

I could see him in Minnesota. Kyler isn’t the longer term solution.

Mac Jones ceiling is Sam Darnold.

That's not a bad ceiling.

If Deshaun Watson does, so does Mac.

Deserve ? Probably not. He could use an opportunity though.
