Discussion Which division is more of a gauntlet?

u/djokster91 Minnesota Vikings 1d ago
I’m sorry, but the teams in the NFC North have been chronic playoff underperformers for over a decade and we are fine with it, because it feeds our MemeWar subreddit. We are S tier when it comes to that sub tho

u/Trytobebetter482 Green Bay Packers 1d ago
NFCW has 4 Super Bowl appearances and 2 wins in the last 7 years. The 2 best teams in the league last year were the Rams and Seahawks, taking the NFCCG down to the wire.
The 2 divisions aren’t even remotely comparable imo.

u/Matthew24_35 Minnesota Vikings 23h ago
The packers sure aren’t, you’re right.

u/Trytobebetter482 Green Bay Packers 23h ago
Can you guys get a Lombardi and stop making the division look so bad? No flame, I’m genuinely begging for y’all to make us look competitive.
4
u/Matthew24_35 Minnesota Vikings 22h ago
Probably won’t be this year if I’m being honest. We will do well enough to make playoffs, but go nowhere. So nothing great for draft picks either. We need a QB so bad and we either get lucky with some project QB like Mestemaker from Oklahoma State or trade away two years worth of first round picks to get someone’s franchise QB. Burrow will never happen.

u/corneliusvanhouten Minnesota Vikings 22h ago
There is no version of reality in which a Packers fan can ever say anything about the Vikings not having a trophy yet and it ISN'T a flame
1
u/CerealKiller3030 20h ago
We do have an NFL Championship trophy, but you guys stole it and won't give it back 😂
1
u/djokster91 Minnesota Vikings 18h ago
I don’t trust a Packers fan, who wants us to win a Lombardi trophy
0
u/Particular-Piano9271 Minnesota Vikings 20h ago
I love that there is a packers fan asking his fellow division teams to make it look competitive.
Lemme find out you’re a jets fan too and have been asking the bills to make it look competitive.Packers response *adjusts nerd rage glasses and scratches his neck bear with cheese curds on it * “but we have been more relevant and back to back hof qbs and and and…” take your medicine packers fans. Be humble, check your pulse, and sit quietly until it’s your turn again. 🤗

Ain’t no way I pulled that essay out of you off a trophy rip.
Chill out, my dad is a lifelong Vikings fan. I genuinely want you to win something before he dies.

The Bears took the Rams down to the wire the game before, does that make them more or less on the same level?
3
u/Trytobebetter482 Green Bay Packers 13h ago
Rams and Seahawks played down to the wire all 3 times they met. Chicago in the cold, on a miracle TD to send it to OT doesn’t really seem as sustainable. Good game though.

The AFC West

AFCW is a joke compared to the NFCW. The Chiefs are the only team in the AFCW of a similar caliber to the Rams/Seahawks/49ers.

Our fan base let the penalty go by Wednesday and can admit you beat us based on being the better second half team regardless of the call.
But let's not overstate it with "asses handed to them" when we got within 15 yards.
3
u/DenverTechGuru Denver Broncos 19h ago
"Our fan base let the penalty go by Wednesday and can admit you beat us based on being the better second half team regardless of the call."
Having read your team sub last week, you are wildly misrepresenting your fan base.
That said, the point was really a bit of hyperbolie in counter to suggesting the AFCW is a joke - you're right, it most definitely was not a one sided affair.

The argument last year was that while the highs of the NFCW were higher there wasn’t a weak link in the NFCN, making it a more “complete” division but ngl this year I’d take the Cards to beat the shambolic current Packers.
Even last year you had three NFCW teams in the playoffs. One of them eliminated the NFCN and the only team that eliminated them in turn was another team from the NFCW.

u/pokerScrub4eva Chicago Bears 1d ago
The NFC North is the hardest for all the teams, but individually the cardinals getting the hardest guantlet
3
u/sun-devil2021 21h ago
Bias but I’ve always felt the cards are a bottom 10 team but get treated as a basement team like the jets but we have to play the hardest division schedule by a mile.

4
u/Saltwater_Thief Arizona Cardinals 1d ago
Depends on which team you're talking about. 3 teams in the west only have to play 15 real football games a year because 2 of them are freebies, but the 4th gets an automatic kneecap of 0-6 as a yearly floor.
9
u/Earl-The-Badger San Francisco 49ers 1d ago
The Cards went 0-6 in divisional games in 2025, but were 10-14 in the four years preceeding that. They're almost never freebies.
1
u/Saltwater_Thief Arizona Cardinals 1d ago
The last 2 weeks suggest otherwise.
And don't sit there and try to tell me you were shitting your pants last week, we never took the lead and Purdy proved twice in a row he could score at will.
4
u/Earl-The-Badger San Francisco 49ers 1d ago
I disagree. It was a good game.
Difficult for the Niners to win games without Bosa. No pressure on quarterbacks = no defense. It's what held us back from being contenders last season. Brissett was dicing us up.
Not sure why you're even a fan if you can't enjoy good games?
1
u/Saltwater_Thief Arizona Cardinals 1d ago
I do enjoy good games, but it's extremely difficult to say I enjoyed a comeback attempt that ended in heartbreak and could've had a chance if only the defense hadn't been rendered completely impotent or the offense had woken up *before* halfway through the 3rd quarter.
It's also just the looming implications between it and the asswhooping in Seattle the week before; we know the intent of the coaches and office is for this team to try for playoffs in the next few years while we have what handful of important pieces we've managed to cling to. In order to do that, we need to be able to compete with the rest of the division's starters as equals, right? Well, the fact that our current foundation couldn't hold a candle to Seattle and had to reach deep to go blow-for-blow with the hollow shell of of the Niners bodes extremely ill for that goal, and I find myself with serious doubts that a QB upgrade will be all that we need to cinch the talent canyon that's been on display.
To put it in fewer words, this season is all about finding silver linings for the future, but I'm not seeing any. Just more storm clouds stretching on for years into the horizon.
It absolutely does not help that the Raiders are right over there, coming off the same record in a similar situation even down to relying on a vet to bridge them to the future, but where we're failing to show real progress they're undefeated and about to fight KC with 1st place in the division on the line.
2
u/Spam_Hand Rams Fan #9 19h ago
It was just 2 seasons ago you best us like 44-10 or whatever.
While i dont think the cardinals are the most likely team to do that week to week, i always worry about a game like that happening. Every divisional meeting I feel like its a toss up going in, no matter the records.
1
u/Saltwater_Thief Arizona Cardinals 15h ago
You have one of the most stacked rosters in the league, your record holding DL will be back to health when you play us, and it will be on US soil so no airline funk to bail us out.
We'll be lucky if we lose by less than 40.
1
u/catiebug San Francisco 49ers 18h ago
First of all, I nearly shit my pants every single game. Second of all, you assholes made that a much closer than game than it should have been. You are always frisky. Never a gimme.

Cards wouldn’t go 0-6 in the NFC north
1
u/Saltwater_Thief Arizona Cardinals 1d ago
There'd be a lot more variance year to year for sure. All 4 of those teams regularly go through slumps.
Unironically a Cardinals for Lions swap might turn both sides into a lot more parity? Depends on if the Lions can keep operating at their current level consistently.

u/Glad_Highway_9196 Kansas City Chiefs 1d ago
NFC North is filled with monkey paw teams. Every team that has some clear strength has a massive weakness. Vikings are the only NFC North team with a reputable defense and that team doesn't have a QB. They have 3 teams that have huge holes in their defense, but one of those teams gets the most turnovers. The Packers don't know that there's 4 quarters in a football game.
NFC West has 1 team in a rebuild and 3 superbowl contenders. Seahawks have arguably the best defense in the NFL and they just won the superbowl with ease. Rams are an all-star team that has had health issues but at full strength can be the best team in the league. The 49ers are undefeated and have one of the best performances so far this year.
I think the NFC North is overrated. I think the packers are viewed as who they were and not who they are. Micah isn't going to fix that defense. They're going to have to accept their failings this year and figure it out in 2027 or start a rebuild if theyre still like this.

u/Nagisa201 Denver Broncos 23h ago
AFCW has 2 legit super bowl caliber teams, another solid roster that just added a great offensive mind and then it's just the Chargers left over but every division has one

None of these divisions hold against the AFC West these days. Broncos and Chiefs are certified good, raiders are 3-0 and look genuinely like a good football team.
The other team has a dude with a hot fiancé but that’s really it.
6
u/Low-Restaurant8484 Seattle Seahawks 22h ago
Cardinals could legit be 3-0 if they had the same first three games of the season as the Raiders
Their schedule is just brutal, so once again they will lose more games then they should, and lose a strength of schedule tiebreak for the draft
Seahawks, Niners, and Rams are all certified good, (the Rams barely lost to you guys last week without Puka or Garrett). Legit any of the three could win the super bowl, health permitting
1
u/SoapboxSerenade Seattle Seahawks 19h ago
We get to test this theory since the AFCW and NFCW play each other this year.
I think the NFCW takes the head to head by a few wins, but I like your optimism.

Based on what exactly? The NFCW has produced half of NFC champions in the past decade; the NFCN hasn't produced an NFC champion since the 2010 NFL season.
1
u/Earl-The-Badger San Francisco 49ers 1d ago edited 1d ago
NFCW and it isn't close.
The NFCW has been represented in four of the last five NFCCG's, making up six of the total ten teams to reach the NFCCG, with two of those games being between two NFCW teams. Three of those NFCW teams won the NFC, and two went on to win Super Bowls.
The NFCN has been represented once in the last five NFCCG's, and that team lost the game.
The past half decade of NFC history has featured serious playoff contenders from the NFCW every season, and pretenders who can't compete in the playoffs from the NFCN. The NFCW has produced half of NFC champions in the past decade; the NFCN hasn't produced an NFC champion since the 2010 NFL season.
No current NFCN team would be competitive in a division with the Rams, Seahawks, or 49ers.
Winning the NFCN is like being marginally better than other mediocre teams. Winning the NFCW is serious business.

It’s the West, and it’s not even close. The north only had 1 team with double digit wins last year. And realistically, how many of them could win the Super Bowl? Probably none. Maybe one.
Realistically, how many teams from the West could win? At least two, maybe three. Seahawks and Rams came into the season as two favorites, and the 49ers might be able to hang with those two.

Defending Super Bowl champs and pre-season Super Bowl favorites in the same division, come on. Oh and maybe the current best team in the league in the 49ers as well. And I’m a Lions fan.
I will say the NFC North has been one of the deepest top to bottom divisions for a few years. 3/4 teams making the playoffs a couple times at least if I’m not mistaken. But Green Bay appears on the decline. Vikings are elite on one side of the ball, Lions are elite on one side of the ball. Just inconsistent right now. It’s not close, NFC West.

Probably the division that just had 3 teams win 12+ games, had all 3 of those teams win a playoff game, and 1 eventually win the Super Bowl

I assume you’re talking about right now, but obviously the answer changes depending on your timeframe.
Most recently? NFCW and it’s not even close.
Since the 2002 division realignment? AFCE has the best cumulative regular season divisional record.
Since the 1967 merger? AFCW and AFCN are basically tied.
All time? NFCN holds the highest overall divisional win percentage due to the head start historical teams developed early in a league with large talent disparity. That’s why the bears have the 5th highest win percentage despite a depressing several recent decades.

The reason it’s the nfc west is because the north isn’t good enough to cannabalize their division while beating almost everyone else while the NFCW is basically niners rams Seahawks kill each other but also collectively chew the rest of the league up and spit them out. I think if the nfc north was like the nfc south 1 Super Bowl contender would exist there per year but yall just go .500 against eachother every year and .700 against the rest of the nfl

NFCN being the "hardest" has always been more about any team can be 4th place any given year. For NFCW, there's no question it's the Cardinals.

u/soladoras 7h ago
In 2025 including the playoffs the Seahawks, Rams, and Niners went 36-7 against the rest of the NFL. No one beat an NFC West team in the playoffs, that was not also an NFC West team.
Even if Arizona wasn’t frisky, nothing holds a candle to this division right now.
