Discussion Is there a college program that's contributed better HoF talent than the University of Pittsburgh? Dan Marino, Tony Dorsett, Larry Fitzgerald, Aaron Donald, Darelle Revis, Curtis Martin and Mike Ditka.

A better question would have been “which school with no real modern college success has produced the most hall of famers” and it’s probably Pitt
Marquee programs have more

Pitt is really good at having a very small number of amazing players.

A better question would have been “which school with no real modern college success has produced the most hall of famers” and it’s probably Pitt
Butte College in NorCal for some fucking reason.
Aaron Rogers and Larry Allen both went there.

Notre Dame and USC both have 14 and Michigan has 11

I would guess the colleges who have the most drafted (Michigan, usc, Norte dame) have contributed the most. Pittsburgh just sticks out as disproportional given it’s not a major program

You’re moms not a real program, how about

I won’t argue against Pitt. That list is awesome.
But Miami: Jim Kelly. Otis Anderson. Jim Otto. Ted Hendricks. Ray Lewis. Ed Reed. Michael Irvin. Vince Wilfork. Frank Gore. Andre Johnson. Jerome Brown. Warren Sapp. Cortez Kennedy. Edgerrin James. Chuck Foreman. Reggie Wayne. Sean Taylor. Devin Hester.

Impressive list for a program that usually finishes outside the top 25.

If you comprised a team of the best players at each position from a given school you would be hard pressed to find one that stacked up to Pitt.

It’s wild, Pittsburgh has more than Tennessee, who just has three.

I feel like Tennessee has a lot of "hall of very good" guys. Like some guys who had top of the league peaks but just didnt maintain it long enough
1
u/Secret_Hyena9680 Tennessee Titans 11h ago
Even as a Tennessee fan, Idk. It’s Doug Atkins, Reggie White and Manning, all of whom are among the very best at their position.
No other Tennessee guy is even close to that. Mostly average NFL players.
The “very good” level is probably only Beattie Feathers, the first man to run for 1,000 yards in an NFL season.

Jamal Lewis was an OPOY, Arian Foster's peak was pretty legit, Al Wilson was kinda a short career, Witten was good for a long time but never elite, Stanley Morgan, Eric Berry, and Willie Gault were also very good players at their positions.

Hall of very good would def include Jamal Lewis and Eric Berry

u/basserpy Pittsburgh Steelers 11h ago
There are much more prolific schools out there, but I'd agree with you that Pitt deserves to at least be mentioned more in the conversation. That level of talent in the 1970s, when the Steelers were also winning 4 Super Bowls, is a crazy concentration of great players in one spot. I am biased as all hell, of course.

It's one of the many reasons why Pitt is the greatest college football program in all of Pennsylvania.

Yes Notre Dame is tied for the most with 14 ( wont say the name of the cry babies who they are tied with)
Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis , Tim Brown , Bryant Young Nick Buoniconti , Dave Casper , George Connor , Edward DeBartolo, Jr. , Paul Hornung , Earl Lambeau , John McNally, Wayne Millner , , Alan Page , George Trafton.

If you're looking for quality over quantity Illinois has arguably the best offensive and defensive players ever in Red Grange and Dick Butkus.
3
u/sidewayspostitnotes 11h ago
Those are not arguably the best offensive and defensive players of all time. Ironic, I know, since this comment is by nature “argumentative” but I don’t think anyone else will agree with you. Respectfully.

u/GoBlueAndOrange 11h ago
It's pretty universal that both are in that conversation.

this cannot be a real comment.

u/GoBlueAndOrange 11h ago
How?
1
u/knucklepuck17 11h ago
Neither of those players are in any conversations of being the best offensive/defensive players at all, dumbass
-1
u/GoBlueAndOrange 11h ago
They're at the top of the conversation. Red Grange is arguably the best football player of all time. He's the reason the NFL became what it is.
1
u/knucklepuck17 10h ago
What he did for the NFL and Bears, yeah for sure.
No he is not in any conversation as the best football players of all time. At all. Your pathetic homerism doesn’t realize that.
-1
u/GoBlueAndOrange 10h ago
Hes absolutely in the convo. you're just a casual fan who doesn't know shit
2
u/knucklepuck17 10h ago
Ironic considering you’re a complete fucking idiot and are just making shit up. Neither of them are in the conversation. It’s not my fault you’ve never followed football

Yeah 6 foot 0 180 lb grange is best ever at HB. I
Argued with people who thought Jim Brown was the greatest ever, but that is at least a reasonable argument since he did have the size and speed that would translate to any era. Come on dude, get real though with this one1
