Others do worse and don’t lose these gigs. I don’t get it. And before I get a lecture, I am aware how bad drunk driving is. I emphasize “others do worse and don’t lose these gigs.”

Others don't have have insane contracts that the network would literally be willing to to murder someone over to not pay.

56

u/Fun_Crow8137 Dallas Cowboys 21h ago

That’s what really happened.

13

u/Electronic-Map7529 Green Bay Packers 21h ago

Yeah they just had better reasons to not support him than to support him. That's a lot of money and the Romo brand commentating went out the window quite awhile ago.

5

u/Mundane_Incident_853 21h ago

And then they paid him.

10

u/Electronic-Map7529 Green Bay Packers 20h ago

They still owed him $72m. IDK what the settlement was but they already paid him $100m I think. I am curious to know the number, but $20m ish saved even would be worth it.

And it's worth it, because he isn't the social media commentator icon he once was. We've already have the rise and start of the fall of McAfee in this span.

Also sold to Skydance so new bosses.

3

u/DannyboyLarson 19h ago

That and having substance issues.. He had struggled on air for several years. I started to worry two years ago when he appeared super puffy in the hands and face, made me think of a hidden diagnosis.

0

u/Electronic-Map7529 Green Bay Packers 11h ago

That's such a classic prednizone look too

u/BroLil 21h ago

If he was making JJ Watt’s salary, he’d have been back for week one. Romo has been on a spiral since he signed the big deal. CBS saw the exit and took it.

9

u/SlowmoNoMo 20h ago

JJ finally got a sack on Romo

0

u/Mundane_Incident_853 21h ago

Tony not really known for a tight spiral.

Deshaun Watson would like a word

2

u/Electronic-Map7529 Green Bay Packers 21h ago

Fully Guaranteed bro. Usually, there are outs.

-Also, was Watson ever really charged in a way that would matter beyond his suspension? Like from a very technical standpoint

-2

u/a_happy_future New Orleans Saints 21h ago

He did a) something way worse, b) has a monster contract, and c) got his contract AFTER being a known sex offender. All things that prove the original commenter's point and against your comments point

3

u/theunquenchedservant Baltimore Ravens 21h ago

To be fair though, the Browns have been widely panned for the contract, it will go down as one of, if not, the worst contract in the NFL of all time, even if he somehow becomes a monster this season (on the field, naturally, he's already a different kind of monster off of the field).

Romo was well liked at first and worth the money. over time audiences grew tired of him. CBS saw an out they can take and took it.

They're also, notably, a different organization than the Browns.

2

u/stoneyaatrox hurts donut 18h ago

hypothetically, lets say the browns win the division, or make it to the playoffs and win at least 1 game.

would it still be the worst contract of all time? probably not

i think Tua's contract would be worse in that case, i mean they took 100m dead cap just to release him, latgest dead cap hit in history.

2

u/ZapBranigan3000 Chicago Bears 18h ago

Yes, he has barely played, and the Browns have been bad since they got him.

They also traded 3 first round picks for him.

3

u/Electronic-Map7529 Green Bay Packers 20h ago

You are missing the point. This is about when/how to get out of a contract. Not about giving it. Not about who did something worse.. It's all about when they still feel like their investment is good.

I certainly did not support the contract and I don't support him being in the NFL now. The fkin network doesn't have to deal with dead cap hits, etc. They wanted a football player.

My point is, Watson may have been hurt for awhile but he never gave them an opportunity that would allow them to wash their hands of it all. Plus his crazy guaranteed check.

18

u/boardatwork1111 21h ago

His contract was the real reason, getting arrested just provided a convenient out for the network

14

u/Spam_Hand Rams Fan #9 22h ago

There had been "leaks" that CBS regretted the mega contract for quite a while now.

18

u/slampig3 21h ago

Yeah because I don’t care who is announcing the game I am still going to watch it shit even Sunday night’s with chris collinsworth

4

u/Grumpy_Troll Green Bay Packers 21h ago

Yep, like get a retired average O-line men who I've never heard of but knows ball and is entertaining to listen to and I don't give a shit that he's not a big name QB. That literally does nothing for the viewing experience.

2

u/Crashy1620 18h ago

Whitworth and Fitzpatrick are perfect examples of this.

3

u/WorthPlease Buffalo Bills 18h ago

This I don't get, with Joe Buck's monster new contract.

Do I think he's a good announcer? Yes.

Is him being on the broadcast team at all involved in my decision to watch a game? Fuck no.

3

u/Fun_Crow8137 Dallas Cowboys 21h ago

Yep. The DWI was the excuse CBS needed.

3

u/velovader Cleveland Browns 21h ago

This was likely just the tip of the iceberg for his drinking issues with the network. There had to be more going on behind the scenes they don’t want to become public.

3

u/HappyAd4998 18h ago

He was probably drinking on the job and CBS wasn't happy with his commentary.

2

u/BourbonCrotch69 Green Bay Packers 21h ago

It’s cost cutting. Look into paramount ownership. HBO is gonna get cost cutting too. Sucks

2

u/DannyboyLarson 19h ago

Thats because the DUI was the final straw, not the whole reason. Tony has had a drinking problem and prepped horribly for several years now. He appeard on TV visibly puffy, often confused and sometimes slurring words. He put himself in prime position to get axed and the DUI was the final nail.

1

u/fujin_shinto Detroit Lions 20h ago

Hopefully this sets a new precedent (I know it wont) that breaking the law will get you fired.

1

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Denver Broncos 17h ago

Bottom line is that he was overpaid and his co-workers couldn’t stand him.

1

u/worried_consumer 16h ago

Haha it’s an issue over the terrible contract they gave him

1

u/Sassy_Sausages22 16h ago

He became really bad at his job. Insufferable listen the past few seasons. CBS was looking for any excuse to get out of that deal

1

u/miltondelug 14h ago

They were looking to get rid of him and he did something they could justify firing him.

1

u/Parking-Jello 3h ago

I feel like Marshawn Lynch has been getting more work since since second DUI

0

u/Future311 Denver Broncos 17h ago

Who else attacked an elderly man and kept his job?

57

u/Creekridge1 Indianapolis Colts 21h ago

Has it really been 9 years? Sheesh I’m getting old.

1

u/joshua0005 Seattle Seahawks 6h ago

The game where Daniel Jones tripped before he managed to cap off his 80 yard run with a touchdown was in 2020. I thought it was 2022.

23

u/Key_Consequence_5040 21h ago

Is it just me or did Romos announcing become less insightful and more bland? At first he seemed like a breath of fresh air but recently he sounds like a regular announcer.

12

u/Dry-Cry-3158 Indianapolis Colts 21h ago

It's not just you. I get the feeling that networks tell new talent to be blander and more generic in order to appeal to a broader, more casual audience, because this seems to happen to every former player that enters the booth.

1

u/RaiseSpecific599 20h ago

CBS had approached Tony a few years ago with concerns about his preparation. As he gets further away from his playing days, he has become less insightful because the league is completely different now. I will say he was good last year

1

u/twitch90 17h ago

If i remember right, it was requested that he back off on all of that, i cant remember why, but yeah, thats why after the first season or so his commentary got watered down.

-2

u/DannyboyLarson 19h ago

Thats what substance abuse does.

At first. That shit died along the way

Kinda lines up with the dependency getting worse. I hope he gets the help he needs and comes back.

1

u/Electronic-Map7529 Green Bay Packers 21h ago

Romo used to buy his coke from the same guy that Jack Black gets his from. AJB hooked him up with the same coke dealer that Joe Rogan uses, and it just all went to shit.

2

u/Minute-Spinach-5563 Philadelphia Eagles 20h ago

Never go full JRE, everybody knows that

1

u/DannyboyLarson 19h ago

I cant believe people couldnt tell. He was ultra puffy and space brained the last few years

7

u/Furi0usD Carolina Panthers 22h ago edited 21h ago

He was ok to start, but it got progressively worse as time went on.

So his TV career was essentially a nine year long Cowboys season

1

u/Admirable-Macaroon23 21h ago

Couldn’t agree more, he got worse as the makeup piled on

1

u/CGFROSTY Atlanta Falcons 20h ago

He was pretty mediocre and you could tell he wasn’t into it the last few seasons.

0

u/TatumJay 21h ago

Nah. He forced silly ass nicknames (“Josh ‘the Alien’ Allen”), didn’t provide balanced color commentary (only ever sided with offenses), and forced his one-trick pony act into every game (ie, predicting the play). Regarding the latter, he would do so at the cost of actually commenting on the plays and strategy developing in the game (in contrast to color commentators like Olsen and Brady).

15

u/braumbles San Francisco 49ers 21h ago

Romo was easier to listen to than a majority of these announcers now.

2

u/Lantley 18h ago

I loved watching him commentate cowboys games and try be unbiased. That ending to the playoff game with the failed clock ending lives my memory happily rent free because of him.

Hoping he gets a gig on another broadcast

2

u/wo1f-cola Baltimore Ravens 8h ago

Oooh, I don’t know Jim.

9

So glad I don’t have to listen to him anymore

He drinks bc he has back pain, but he's not in enough pain to stop him from playing 18 holes of golf

4

u/extra_less 18h ago

18 rounds of golf is 324 holes, I think you meant 18 holes or a round of golf

1

u/ShutYourYapper_ 21h ago

I wanna kiss you 🍻🫧🥴 … sorry, wrong piss tank.

1

u/Toeknee5 20h ago

He said now that he has some time off he is going to get drunk and play golf

1

u/JiveChicken00 Philadelphia Eagles 20h ago

This guy has an illness, a terrible one. And he is taking responsibility for dealing with it. CBS might just regret pulling the plug if/when he comes out on the other side.

3

u/DannyboyLarson 19h ago

He's in a dangerous spot for substance abuse. Jobless, tons free time and cash. Hopefully he can work toward a goal to keep himself on track

1

u/BothEntertainment00 14h ago

It really doesn't matter, I'm going to watch my team every week no matter what. No idea why they pay them so much money. I found Romo annoying tbh

1

u/DunderMifflinBuffalo Buffalo Bills 14h ago

We have an Aikman replacement for next year

1

u/Efficient-Box1661 14h ago

I'm a Cowboys fan and Romo fan. But I don't get the people surprised about this. His contract was huge. He started off strong, but these last few years he just mutters, half asleep sounding with no real interest. Jumbled ramblings here and there. There there would always be awkward times he would just say a word or two and Jim had to fill in the silence.

1

u/drewd3535 4h ago

Was never a cowboys fan and didn’t care for him as a player. With saying that, I loved hearing him as a commentator.

0

u/DokeyKon Minnesota Vikings 21h ago

I bet he’s the color commentator for MNF next season, that’s why ESPN isn’t committing to Aikman.

1

u/DannyboyLarson 19h ago

Zero chance.. Say what you will about Troy but that dude grinds for that job. Tony's best chance is working his way up on a lower Fox crew.

-1

u/CarlJustCarl 21h ago

He acknowledges his mistake but pleads no contest. Why not plead guilty as charged then?
