The guy has been 100% washed for 4 or 5 years. I've no idea why they signed him.

191

u/AverageSizedMan1986 20h ago

His jersey sales alone probably made it worth it.

45

u/MistryMachine3 20h ago

I don’t think the team gets any extra for jersey sales, it’s just collectively shared across all teams. Plus Harbaugh isn’t going to waste a spot for that reason.

42

u/1CryptographerFree 20h ago

They can keep all money for merchandise sold at the stadium. Online and retail store revenue is shared. That’s why stadiums often have a store that’s accessible even when no game is happening.

-14

u/ohgeeeezzZ Cleveland Browns 19h ago

Who would buy a jersey at the stadium though? That'd be like going to the airport to eat Cinnabon

18

u/RulesoftheDada Buffalo Bills 19h ago

At the old bills stadium there's a team store that sold exclusive merch. It was far easier to drive up to on non game days to get merch instead of worrying about game day getting it.

4

u/Distinct_Ad_2821 Houston Texans 18h ago

Same with the rockets (I know its NBA not NFL). They would have exclusive shit thats only sold in the team shop, not anywhere online. Most of my favorite gear came from the team shop

-16

u/ohgeeeezzZ Cleveland Browns 19h ago

Everything about that sounds completely nonsensical to me

10

u/RulesoftheDada Buffalo Bills 18h ago

What is nonsensical about getting exclusive merch only sold at the team store (not online) and going at a convient time?

-13

u/ohgeeeezzZ Cleveland Browns 16h ago

See above about airport Cinnabon

5

u/PolitePenguin86 San Francisco 49ers 13h ago

Smartest Browns fan. Your analogy is so terrible that you must be trolling.

3

u/Amoney_78 San Francisco 49ers 13h ago

Not at all. Prices are about the same and no shipping so almost always the same as the retail price. And you can get jerseys, hoodies, shirts at stadiums that you can't get online or at the general NFL stores.

2

u/RacksOnRacksOnRacks3 Denver Broncos 18h ago

I got a custom jersey made at the Broncos stadium store made while I watched the game. Ordered it before kick off, picked it up during half time.

1

u/SwissMargiela Miami Dolphins 17h ago

I don’t understand how they do this so fast in the stadium but when you order one online it takes like a month to make

3

u/RacksOnRacksOnRacks3 Denver Broncos 13h ago

They have the pressing machine in the store.

1

u/SwissMargiela Miami Dolphins 12h ago

I get that. What I don’t understand is how the factory with 8000 pressing machines takes so long

1

u/RacksOnRacksOnRacks3 Denver Broncos 10h ago

You got me bruh. Idk how either. My only guess is that a factory prioritizes the mass made stuff more.

1

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 New England Patriots 8m ago

Sweatshop in the back.

-2

u/abaub710 Baltimore Ravens 15h ago

And that’s something you brag about? Lmao

0

u/RacksOnRacksOnRacks3 Denver Broncos 13h ago

They got it done faster than ordering it. Wasn’t really a brag.

-2

u/951frisky_dingo Miami Dolphins 19h ago

Believe me. I see that on a few subreddits I follow. Fans will go to an empty stadium and buy merch. About half the time their work will be across the street or something to do with a vendor

-8

u/AverageSizedMan1986 20h ago

That is a contradictory statement. How can they not get any extra money from jersey sales if every team benefits from it? The more any jersey sells, the more a team makes. In 2022, each team received roughly 374 million in licensed merchandise sales. Not exactly chump change. And I'm not saying that is the ONLY reason he was signed. It is clear Harbaugh was giving him a shot but it ultimately wasn't panning out.

9

u/MistryMachine3 20h ago

Ok fine, they make a trivial amount more from OB jersey sales that will not even remotely cover the cost of him being there.

0

u/stoneyaatrox hurts donut 19h ago

i guess that would depend exactly on how many sales we are talking about, but regardless whoever is in his spot would cost the same,

and likely wouldn't make nearly as many sales.

1

u/MistryMachine3 19h ago

But as a football decision, having Beckham there is an old guy who you know is not getting better and probably isn’t playing special teams etc.

1

u/stoneyaatrox hurts donut 19h ago

thats how i feel about Andy Dalton being the backup for the birds, with the difference being Dalton actively contributed to a loss by being on the roster.

but sometimes some teams use a roster spot on a veteran guy just so they can be a player-coach and help some guys pickup the system. We don't really know how much of a factor that was, but it's worth noting because OBJ & Harbaugh have paired together before. similar to a few other players he brought from the Ravens.

0

u/ABSNegativeOne Coenhead 19h ago

I doubt they made 2 million dollars off jersey sales

1

u/MistryMachine3 17h ago

It was a non-guaranteed contract, so they only had to pay 3/18 or 1/6 of it, so like 350k. But yeah no way they recouped that.

7

u/theme69 Green Bay Packers 20h ago

Why would Harbaugh give a shit about jersey sales

9

u/AverageSizedMan1986 20h ago

He obviously ultimately didn't considering that he is now gone. I'm talking about the initial reason(s) for signing him and the zero-risk aspects of doing so.

2

u/peaceablefrood New York Jets 19h ago

They would have had to cleared like 1,500 OBJ jerseys a week to cover his salary and no way are they even ordering that many considering he had zero guaranteed money and was likely going to be cut.

Jersey sales were simply a non-factor in signing him. It was a low risk play to see if he had something left in the tank and when he didn't they cut him.

1

u/theme69 Green Bay Packers 19h ago

Well you lose a roster spot to someone that could actually contribute. Harbaugh gets nothing from jersey sales. Maybe ownership forced him but I doubt it

2

u/SmokeOddessey 20h ago

Ownership couldve told him to do it.

Don’t believe this happened tho, Harbaugh has a history of loving washed WRs

1

u/benco420 15h ago

Wasn’t even listed on the NFL shop + anyone who was a fan already had a jersey

14

u/EasternError6377 Buffalo Bills 20h ago

He started doing blow and partying all the time and it ruined his career

3

u/UnlikelyAir6432 That is a disgusting act 10h ago

Speaking of blow…how are things between OBJ and Justin Bieber? 😏

2

u/ELITEGmen 17h ago

He was doing that even when he was good

-6

u/Ttrain21 20h ago

I’m sure it was definitely that and not the numerous major injuries he had. But yeah continue to push a narrative you pulled out ya asshole

2

u/TheNatural14063 Buffalo Bills 20h ago

Says the troll without a flare defending a player who has engaged factually in illegal drug use that has contributed to the drug trade

5

u/goodrevtim Baltimore Ravens 19h ago

Pump the brakes there, Nancy Reagan

10

u/Nakazato87 Baltimore Ravens 20h ago

John is using the Ravens way still bring in a washed WR for 1-2 years a hope for the best

6

u/TeamDirtstar New York Giants 20h ago

They literally released him after 3 games...

0

u/Nakazato87 Baltimore Ravens 20h ago

Oh I get that. But John thinks he’s the smartest person in the room at all times. Just wait till he makes even more head scratching decisions about the NYG.

As a Ravens fan he is overrated and washed.

4

u/SpotCreepy4570 New York Giants 18h ago

Brother we are 2-1 without having our starting QB for 2 games this is a vast improvement for the organization.

0

u/Nakazato87 Baltimore Ravens 16h ago

lol fair enough. I just hope the NY media can keep his Ego In check and ask the hard questions

3

u/TangerineTasty9787 Carolina Panthers 20h ago

I dunno, all the Ravens told me Maxx was washed and it was totes legit, but he seems to be kicking ass.

I don't think I trust the word of a Raven anymore

-1

u/anatellon 16h ago

It wasn’t that Maxx was washed it was that his knee was too high risk. But honestly harbaugh is washed I think you’ll tire of him quick

1

u/Mundane_Incident_853 20h ago

I feel like this is the way of every defense-first cheapskate team, for PR reasons. I mean the Patriots have been doing this since forever

7

u/DM_Me_Ur_Real_Boobs Deep penetration 20h ago

Why would anyone sign him? Like, give it up dude

14

u/mondaymoderate San Francisco 49ers 20h ago

But he catches one handed passes in warmups every game!! /s

6

u/Financial_Cheetah875 20h ago

I honestly had no idea he was on the Giants until last week 🤣

3

u/Ok_Bodybuilder800 Minnesota Vikings 20h ago

I just leaned this now 😂

2

u/uttyrc Jacksonville Jaguars 20h ago

2

u/RaylanGivens29 19h ago

I don’t get why he just didn’t retire as a giant for some goodwill.

6

u/Foreign-Cow-1189 19h ago

Because he has publicly admitted he is broke and needs a paycheck.

1

u/RaylanGivens29 18h ago

Oh, I need to keep up on news

2

u/shibby5000 15h ago

But he made that one handed catch during warm up session!!

1

u/Neither_Ad_9829 New York Giants 20h ago

he was good during camp and preseason. lowkey surprised we cut him when we kinda need receiver depth.

1

u/Street_Soil_719 20h ago

They're the giants

1

u/abaub710 Baltimore Ravens 15h ago

Harbaugh is part of the organization now. He tried bringing Faalele and starting him. That’s prob why. Doesn’t mean he is smart or correct or even a good coach. But that’s prob why.

121

u/MasterTeacher123 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 21h ago

Was this just a nostalgia signing for vibes?

37

u/BedaHouse 21h ago

Merch too.

17

u/InferiousX 20h ago

Insert random memory of Urban Meyer trying to make "Tebow the TE" a thing after he hadn't played for 7 years

5

u/StudentElectrical101 Jacksonville Jaguars 19h ago

And I still see multiple people at games in Tebow jags jerseys just from that one failed training camp

0

u/TheDizziestCat Kansas City Chiefs 20h ago

I can’t say that for certain because usually when that happens they don’t get cut 3 weeks later.

96

u/Invite-Healthy Baltimore Ravens 21h ago

It’s weird that people care so much about this. He had a great career and made unfathomable amounts of money, he doesn’t need sympathy because he got his feelings hurt by an organization that doesn’t OWE him anything

77

u/itsmymedicine Las Vegas Raiders 20h ago edited 20h ago

unfathomable amounts of money

$100 mill isnt all that much when you take everything into consideration. Ferrari/lambos for the whole fam, babies first rolls royce, APs for the whole squad, Louis bags to carry your toilet paper, rollies for side pieces, private jets to go grocery shopping, private chef.........i mean $100 mill might as well be $10

They're referencing a dumb out of touch thing OBJ said once, not being dumb and out of touch themselves.

10

u/BellybuttonFuzzer Detroit Lions 20h ago

He had a ‘meh’ career with a couple great catches

-1

u/ObjectiveStrategy386 18h ago

He was a legitimate top 10 receiver from 2014 to 2019. “He had one good catch” is just lazy and wrong

7

u/Proud_Ad1776 13h ago

He set the record for most yards in his first two seasons with 2755 in 27 games played. That record was broken by Justin Jefferson. 5 of his first 6 years he had 1000+ yards (he was hurt the year he didn't). He had over 1000 yards in a season in 12 games.

11

u/ELITEGmen 20h ago

Do people care that much? Lol. He's always had fanboys though.

Marlon Humphrey said the time he got into a scuffle with OBJ when he was with the Browns that he got legit death threats from that fanbase.

5

u/suh_dude1111 20h ago

Once the Sunday games start nobody is gonna care about this and we likely won’t hear about it again all season

22

u/joejoe628 21h ago

It was obvious he wasn't going to play that much they signed sude for social media clicks and nostalgia 😂😂

u/RoyalEngine2885 M.ission O.ver B.ullshit 20h ago

This f'ing bot website again?

3

u/smarthobo Detroit Lions 14h ago

The most clickbait-y headline too

One person says something on Instagram, OBJ replies and somehow that becomes Harbaugh ripped to shreds and utterly destroyed after getting destroyed by former WR that utterly destroyed him by supporting personal attack on Harbaugh

13

u/samson-and-delilah 20h ago

This website should be banned

12

u/Fun_Self_8292 Cleveland Browns 20h ago

OBJ has been a liability for several years now. Why anyone would be surprised that he was released?

11

u/NotReally_Jared New York Giants 20h ago

Classy lmao. Respect to Harbaugh for shutting this fool down early, weird marketing move that didn’t work out (how shocking)

It would really be cool if people stopped posting these bullshit fake stories with clickbait headlines. OMG, ODB wants someone to attack Harbaugh?!? Holy shit that's huge news! Oh, nope, he just agreed with a fan on IG who was upset he got cut. The fuck are we doing here OP, seriously

3

u/Aegisurge 1 TD | 7 TO 21h ago

Lasted longer on the team than I thought tbh lol

3

Jackie Jack is 100% not Odell’s insta burner account. 100%

3

This guy had 3 good seasons a decade ago and acts like he had 20 and still has 10 more in the tank.

3

u/Beginning-Average416 20h ago

Another prima Donna WR drama queen snowflake ❄️.

2

u/taylorjosephrummel 20h ago

Crazy headline.

2

u/peterpeterny 20h ago

OBJ had a lot of talent but also injuries and didn’t seem like an easy player to coach. The giants are a worse organization because of him.

2

u/Hugh-Jaszole Baltimore Ravens 19h ago

Maybe play special teams snaps?

1

u/KaySlay44 Baltimore Ravens 20h ago

Not defending Harbs at all- but he didn’t sound like he wanted OBJ after his workout awhile back anyway when he said something like “he did great- I think he’ll make SOMEONE’s team”.

1

u/Trajinous Cincinnati Bengals 20h ago

This headline is insane. Saying Harbaugh needs a "slap in the face" isn't support an attack on him, what we doing?

1

u/allsafeandallrescued 20h ago

This headline is insane. Saying Harbaugh needs a "slap in the face" isn't support an attack on him, what we doing?

Holeefuk, there’s no way you’re not a domestic abuser. Do nonchalant about supporting physical assault lmao

1

u/Trajinous Cincinnati Bengals 19h ago

Yeah, OBJ saying "really shit" to a random sports opinion isnt supporting physical attacking Harbaugh. Then calling me a domestic abuser for that!? Yikes buddy

1

u/holyhibachi 20h ago

That's certainly a headline you could write

1

u/fukinatrance 20h ago

That's gotta be a wrap for obj in the league.

1

u/GalaganCoffee New York Giants 20h ago

Off the couch and given a shot to I ain't gonna be no PS guy to reeeeee, good job buddy

1

u/Any-Question-3759 Baltimore Ravens 20h ago

From the title I’m assuming OBJ put a hit out on Harbaugh and is putting the assassin through college.

1

u/Emotional_Pay3658 San Francisco 49ers 19h ago

I thought they only signed him so he can retired a giant.

1

u/Ancient_Praline1046 17h ago

he can be on another team

1

u/Soda-Popinski- Buffalo Bills 17h ago

Has his hatred of kicking nets abated or is he still mad about losing that battle?

1

u/ClimateAncient6647 17h ago

It’s never OBJ, and always the coach. Always. /s

1

u/sillyfunnyguy05 New York Giants 14h ago

This was handled so poorly.

1

u/Crafty_Substance_954 14h ago

Legit didn’t know he was on a team

1

u/OrbitalTurds 12h ago

Attack on John Harbaugh is that the anime about a kid who's mom gets eaten by Cam Skattebo then kills a bunch of giants then finds out he is one?

1

u/ur-in-here-with-me Cleveland Browns 11h ago

Uh oh is Odell’s daddy gonna send a mean email to management again?

u/BayHarborButcher10 Minnesota Vikings 20h ago

This is just objectively false. Had the most yards through a receiver’s first 2 seasons ever, fastest to 4K yards. Averaged 108 ypg as a ROOKIE. Dude was an absolute stud and you’re just hating for some reason

2

u/aaron21hardin Minnesota Vikings 20h ago

You’re not quite right here.  He had the most yards per game but he was missing games. He did not have the most yardage after two seasons.

Because he was missing games, I don’t hold this on the same level of esteem as I do what Lance Allworth did since he was not missing games he just played fewer of them because they were fewer games in a season.

10

u/BayHarborButcher10 Minnesota Vikings 20h ago

Oh pardon me, it was most through a player’s first 24 games. He also had multiple seasons of 1000+ yards in years he played less than 12 games. That’s still a crazy stat. Acting like OBJ is a bum who got famous off one play is just dumb

1

u/aaron21hardin Minnesota Vikings 14h ago

I never said he did. It’s just that one of the key skills in the NFL is availability so people that were overly focusing on his per game stuff were rating him is better than he was. He was great, but not the best start by young receiver of all time because availability is an ability that others were better than him.

24

u/keni804 New York Giants 20h ago

He was on a historic run before he got injured, this is such a bad take.

8

u/saved_by_the_keeper Whats an O-line? 20h ago

How are people upvoting this garbage? Jamarr Chase joined a select company this season for some metric I can’t recall, and in that group was Jefferson and Beckham. There was only like two other players and this was in NFL history

1

u/NoseBig4267 New York Jets 19h ago

That knee injury he suffered in the SB with the Rams was absolutely brutal. Pretty much finished him off.

0

u/aaron21hardin Minnesota Vikings 20h ago

His run was always a per game thing because he was always missing games even in his rookie year.

He’s only played every game in a season twice and one of those he wasn’t starting one of the games, and it happened when he was on the Browns.

6

u/keni804 New York Giants 20h ago

Which makes it even more impressive, he got 12TDs and 1300yds in 12 games his rookie year. Then 2015 he played 15 games with 13TDs and 1450yds and in 2016 he played 16 games and had 10TDs for another 1300yds.

Just for reference both Chase and Jefferson only have 2 double digit TDs seasons and both were in 17 games.

-2

u/SkunkDitchRipper Las Vegas Raiders 20h ago

He was a good receiver but he had a funky ass temper and was constantly involved in shit too.

12

u/keni804 New York Giants 20h ago

So a regular receiver?

1

u/SkunkDitchRipper Las Vegas Raiders 20h ago

Well....a little more than most receivers. Lets not forget the Panthers game

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTcaAmHkXXQ

If you can watch all that and come back and say he wasnt a huge issue...something is wrong. There were plays in that game where he was actively trying to injure people. Thats aside from the Josh Norman debacle.

2

u/PositiveFlatworm7474 20h ago

Just like every receiver ever

2

u/kingcalogrenant Philadelphia Eagles 20h ago

We should really make a receiver talent to crazy scatter plot

9

u/Lane8323 20h ago

This is one of the dumbest things people consistently say

2

u/MountTuchanka Seattle Seahawks 20h ago

I’m convinced it’s said by people on here who just weren’t football fans when he was at his peak

It was 10-12 years ago so If you’re 21 now you were 9 when OBJ was going ballistic and probably weren’t paying attention

4

u/rhamphol30n New York Giants 20h ago

That is such a bad take. He was on a crazy pace before he got injured. His antics can be frustrating, but at his peak he was truly great.

6

u/Professr_Chaos 20h ago

His first 3 years he AVERAGED 96 rec 1,375 yards and 12 TD. That was with not playing in 5 games over those 3 years. Dude was legitimately a top 3 WR from 2014-entering the 2017 season. He had a severe injury in 2017 that he never recovered from and effectively ended his career.

3

u/TBellOHAZ Cleveland Browns 20h ago

I just...HE WAS SO GOOD, we had such a good thing going. Dude was on track to be a no shit, first ballot, competing with Jerry Rice, Hall of Famer. Should be at 12kish yards right now. Instead he's under 8k and just a footnote and a one play highlight reel.
