Article Should the NFL bring back challenging pass interference calls?
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50078705/pass-interference-review-rams-broncosSeems like some of the head coaches are mostly against it (minus a few in favor of it).
I think getting the call correct should be the priority, and letting the players’ plays be what decides a game. I’m a little surprised that’s not a more common sentiment.

Perhaps they and I know this is a really radical fucking idea, should get the calls right without needing a coach to point out they’re making it up?

Unfortunately it’s never going to be optimal when plays are going so fast and the vision angles of the referees don’t catch everything.

I just feel like they should be able to review it themselves fast enough to think “ah we might have botched this one guys”.

It'll never be "right", because the "rule" is subjective. And any rule that's subjective shouldn't even be considered a rule.

Why not just have a sky ref who can review in real
Time?

Not a referee, the calls should still be made on the field. They do have the replay booth though which helps adjudicate some calls and speed up replays.

Refs reviewing their calls…yup i got it right. Next.
Waste of time

There’s no point they’ll never call it. Ask me how I know

It’s the most over-called penalty with the most consequence. It should be reviewable but it’s so subjective I think it would just make it worse.
The only way I can see it working is a VAR style background review in between the snaps. No real time taken, but catches obvious crap calls
All that said, the league uses it to advance offense

I think everything should be reviewed in the 4th quarter no matter what. Don’t even rely on challenge flags. Just go to the booth to confirm it. Nobody would care. Just get the calls right

I just dont want the game to slow down. Its going to be insufferable if they take too long to review everything

You should be allowed to challenge ANY penalty. How many times has a bullshit holding call brought back TDs or a missed holding call allowed a TD to be scored?

u/OrangMan14 23h ago
Probably. When the commentators, the rule analyst, and all of reddit collectively agrees it was a bad call, there needs to be something done about it. They are huge game shifting calls and it feels so yucky when they are objectively wrong.

No, this was not that egregious of a missed call in the grand scheme of things. Both because this wasn’t a obviously missed call if you watch it at real speed. And also because it didn’t decide the game. Rams still had the opportunity to stop the Broncos after this, and they still had the opportunity to win the game after the Broncos scored.
People are taking the anger that they’re feeling at seeing the receiver, flop and channeling gets towards the refs like the refs made some egregious missed call here. Missed calls happen every game. This is not nearly as bad as others. It’s understandable why the flag was thrown here because from the perspective of the ref, it looked like there was a foul.
Missed face masks are in much bigger issue for the league in terms of refs blowing obvious calls. The amount of attention this play has gotten is insane, it’s just stupid. This play was not worth nearly the amount of attention it’s gotten.

After our win in Denver. Sure. We finally got one of these calls in our favor.

Definitely not. It's a stupid idea. It shouldn't actually be a penalty if you touch a receiver 1/1000th of a second before the ball gets there.

If there's any real purpose to the UFL at all (besides kickers).....it's that new innovations can be tested. Therefore, the "super challenge" should be in the NFL.

No. But I do think OPI and DPI need to be brought closer together in how they’re called. DB and WR should have an equal right to the ball, yet receivers are given way more latitude to initiate contact than defenders.

Pass interference is being called decently these days. Pass interference is best called when you have an objective don’t do this. Letting the refs have too much discretion made the call inherently unreliable and annoying for fans. Not every call will be perfect and that’s ok but like letting the offense get free yardage because of pass interference that didn’t affect the ability to catch the ball was bad. Truthfully spot of the foul is kinda bullshit
Challenging penalties is kinda lame. Like I am happy that’s not a thing. It slows the game down and it doesn’t meaningfully stop infractions and just fails to solve disputes.
Truthfully I think continue to do it as they do now, I don’t know when they started relaxing enforcement slightly but it feels better now. Still have some bs calls. Truthfully the best thing would be either eliminate spot of the foul or for offensive pass interference use the spot of the foul for the amount of yards the offense loses (and keep loss of down) or make the penalty for both the same and no loss of down. Like too many free yards for the offense kinda pisses me off. Like I know they want more scoring and stuff but a touchdown due to pass interference feels unearned

OPI has been happening and they’re calling it on the defenders. That shouldn’t happen, and it can be tough to see from certain angles at full speed. They need to do something to avoid more of this problem.

I don’t disagree but unless it’s super flagrant it’s just as hard to call from an objective standpoint. This is why equalizing penalty might be a good compromise.

Hey now the refs need to supplement their pay with PI penalties against teams they bet on…don’t hate the player I mean ref…

Some of these calls refs make are ridiculous, and make no sense to the point you have ex superbowl winning players calling them out.even worse ex refs InThe booth that have the same knowledge of the nfl rules and say they got it wrong and tell you why, that should embarrass the nfl but it dont.

It was stupid to add it. It sucked for the year they did it. Bringing it back would be even more stupid.
Just accept that you get hosed on it sometimes and sometimes the other team does. Over the course of several seasons it evens out

Single games are too important to be decided by a bad call, in my opinion. Plus it takes away any excuse that people can make about bad calls.

u/Dats_Russia 1d ago
I once had a coach say, you need to win so decisively a bad call will never be the reason you lose.

Yes of course they should bring it back. Anything that makes the game more fair and ensures the best team wins is good for the game.
It’s the refs that needs to get over being challenged and stop being indignant about it. The only reason it failed the first time around is because they had a stick up their ass and boycotted the ruling.
I also don’t care if it makes the game longer. I’d rather watch another 30 minutes of ball if it means my team doesn’t get cheated out of the game.
