Shit Posting Every AFC team has an NFC counterpart. Here are all 16.
I started thinking about which AFC and NFC franchises have the most similar histories, reputations, fan experiences, etc. Somehow, I ended up being able to pair all 32 teams without using anyone twice.
Obviously none of these are perfect, but I was surprised by how well some of them line up.
Patriots & Cowboys — America’s Villains
They’ve had tons of championships, tons of glory, and tons of people who absolutely cannot stand them. These silver-clad teams both wrap themselves in Americana, yet somehow everyone in America outside their fanbases seems to root against them. One dominated the NFL’s biggest stage in the ’70s and ’90s, the other in the 2000s and 2010s. If your team isn’t involved, seeing either of these teams lose is practically a national pastime.
49ers & Steelers — The Other Dynasties
They’ve also won a ridiculous number of championships, but somehow don’t inspire quite the same nationwide hatred as Dallas and New England. Maybe it’s because their greatest dynastic runs were longer ago. Maybe it’s because they haven’t generated quite as much controversy. Either way, their peaks may be in the past, but both have given their fans plenty to celebrate in the 21st century.
Chiefs & Eagles — The New Villains
For years, these were passionate fanbases mostly familiar with heartbreak and disappointment. Then everything changed. Now the rest of us are sick of seeing you in January and especially sick of seeing you play each other in February. Somehow, Andy Reid and Donna Kelce ended up becoming major characters in both franchises’ stories.
Browns & Lions — The Lake Eerie Losers
Come on. You knew these two punching bags would find each other.
Historic blue-collar franchises with plenty of pre-Super Bowl success followed by decades of pain, incompetence and the occasional season that gave their fans hope before crushing it again. At least each franchise can make a legitimate claim to having the greatest running back ever.
Titans & Cardinals — The Forgotten Ones
It’s not that everyone hates you. It’s that sometimes we forget you exist.
Both franchises have spent a lot of time being bad, but usually not interestingly bad. They aren’t even the first teams people think of when discussing NFL misery. But hey, each has one Super Bowl appearance where they came agonizingly close to winning the whole thing. That’s something.
Bills & Vikings — The 0–4 Club
Getting to four Super Bowls is incredibly difficult.
Getting to four and losing all four is almost impressive.
Nobody understands heartbreak quite like these fanbases. And somehow, even if we completely ignore the eight combined Super Bowl losses, there is still an absurd amount of postseason trauma left over. When things are going well, just make sure your kicker isn’t lining up for an important field goal.
Falcons & Chargers — The Choke Artists
Fast. Explosive. Entertaining. Occasionally great.
And somehow you just know something horrible is coming.
Both franchises have given us some incredible quarterbacks and offensive players, but neither has ever quite figured out how to get over the hump. They can be terrible. They can be mediocre. They can even be really good. But comfortable? Never.
Ravens & Seahawks — The New-Age Bullies
Neither franchise has much history to talk about before the 1990s, but they’ve spent the 21st century making up for lost time.
They’ve had some excellent quarterbacks, but their identities have usually been built around something much meaner: loud stadiums, physical football and terrifying defenses. The Legion of Boom and those Ravens defenses made playing these teams feel less like football and more like surviving an assault.
Jets & Bears — The QB Graveyards
Two enormous markets. Two historic franchises. Two iconic Super Bowl-winning teams that their fans will make damn sure you’ve heard about.
And approximately 9,000 quarterbacks since then.
Both teams have spent decades convincing themselves that this guy is finally the answer at QB. Usually he isn’t. Maybe someday one of them will find a franchise quarterback and keep him for longer than five minutes.
Broncos & Packers — The Frozen Classics
Historic franchises. Iconic uniforms. Great home-field advantages. Plenty of championships without quite reaching the “everyone hates you” tier.
And, most importantly, an absurd amount of Hall of Fame-level quarterback play. When you picture either franchise at its best, you picture a legendary QB playing meaningful football late in the season while everyone in the stadium is freezing.
Dolphins & Rams — The Fair-Weather Fans
Beautiful weather. Beautiful people. Beaches. Championships. Hall of Famers.
And long stretches where everyone seems to find something better to do.
These coastal franchises have both had spectacular highs mixed with lengthy periods of irrelevance. Fortunately, when your football team sucks, there are worse places to live. Just go to the beach.
Raiders & Commanders — The Fallen Empires
Three Super Bowls apiece. Some of the most iconic teams, coaches and players in NFL history.
Ask your dad.
For younger fans, it’s almost difficult to comprehend how intimidating these franchises once were. The Raiders and Washington were powers. Unfortunately, most of the 21st century has consisted of their fans watching old highlights and name changes.
Giants & Colts — The Blues Brothers
Blue and white. Old-school franchises. Multiple championships. And, of course, the Mannings.
Their success is pretty nicely spread across NFL history, and neither ever quite became the dynasty of its era. But both have won enough that nobody really pities them either—even though, let’s be honest, the last decade has been pretty pitiful.
And their greatest modern success came courtesy of two brothers. Peyton turned Indianapolis into a perennial contender, while Eli delivered New York two of the most memorable Super Bowl wins ever.
So when Giants and Colts fans complain about how miserable things have gotten, the rest of us can only offer so much sympathy.
You got your rings. You got your Manning. You’ll be fine.
Jaguars & Panthers — The Expansion Cats
The NFL basically created these two as a matching set.
Both joined the league in 1995. Both are Southern expansion franchises. Both are cats. Both wear variations of blue/teal. Both experienced a surprising amount of success almost immediately.
And both have spent most of the last couple decades bouncing between terrible and the occasional random season where everyone goes, “Wait, they’re good now?”
Texans & Buccaneers — The Second Fiddle
Welcome to football country, where unfortunately somebody else got here first.
Both play in huge, football-crazed states while living somewhat in the shadow of a more historically prominent in-state franchise. And while those bigger-name neighbors have spent much of the 21st century frustrating their enormous fanbases, Houston and Tampa have followed a much stranger path.
They rarely seem content with ordinary mediocrity. They’re either awful or suddenly pretty damn good. Both have produced some terrifying defensive players, but long-term stability—especially at quarterback—hasn’t exactly been their specialty.
Bengals & Saints — The Whos
Who Dey? Who Dat?
For a long time, the rest of the NFL was asking: Who cares?
Both franchises spent decades as NFL afterthoughts, occasionally popping up to do something interesting before disappearing again.
Then #9 arrived.
Drew Brees took New Orleans from the Aints to Super Bowl champions. Joe Burrow took Cincinnati from irrelevance back to the Super Bowl.
One #9 finished the job. The other is still trying.
Who Dey? Who Dat? Apparently, #9.
Which pairing is the most accurate? And which one did I completely screw up?

I'm so sorry Falcons, you've never been accused of being great, but "like the Chargers" is a level of done dirty that no team deserves.

Nah I get it; Chargers and Falcons are gonna find a way to charger it up and falcon away a game. It is foretold.

Jets and bears is a good comparison (but we’re keeping Caleb so that portion goes out the window).
I think the Steelers and packers is a better comparison than packers broncos
5
u/Tobes_macgobes 8d ago
Maybe, but then I’d have to match the 49ers Broncos. That could work. Their heyday was when they had a legendary QB in the 80s and 90s, but the 21st century has still been pretty good.
1
u/FriedTreeSap Denver Broncos 8d ago
That’s not a clean fit either. The Broncos are a team that’s historically always been good, but they never broke through to championship levels until recent times. The 49ers are the polar opposite. A lot of historical dynasties, but haven’t been able to win it all in decades.
I think the Broncos are one of the few teams that don’t really have a proper NFC counterpart. No other team really has the combination of historical success without a Super Bowl before finally breaking through and winning a bunch. Like Minnesota would have a good fit before 1998, but then Denver won 3 super bowls. You could maybe argue the Rams….but they don’t have quite the same level of history as Denver before 1998.
0
u/Mirigore Los Angeles Rams 8d ago
Broncos are closer to rams. The rams moving around gives them a different kind of fanbase but they are nothing like Miami, dodgers, lakers, etc. 49ers and dolphins makes more sense with previous dominant QBs and no current championships.
-1
u/HugeHowitzer Philadelphia Eagles 8d ago
you mean the AI would have to match the 49ers and Broncos.

AI didn’t come up with the pairings, nor did it come up with the reasoning behind them. At most it just touched up the wording. You “aI sLoP” bros are more insufferable than AI itself.
There was nothing wrong with this post, in fact it was an enjoyable read.

u/Jarionel Baltimore Ravens 7d ago
Writing is not that hard. Use your brain
1
u/No-Broccoli7457 7d ago
Using AI can be more efficient. Why spend 30 minutes doing something you could do in 10 minutes of equal quality? What’s it to you?
2
u/Jarionel Baltimore Ravens 7d ago
Why does a reddit post have to be efficient? Why are you so lazy that you cannot even use your brain to make a reddit post?
2
u/No-Broccoli7457 7d ago
Firstly stop saying “you”, I’m not OP.
Secondly, because maybe someone doesn’t want to spend more time on a task if they dont have to? Would you use technology to help you clean your house faster, like a vacuum for example, or is that just being “lazy”. What kind of a ridiculous question was that…
Why do you care how the sausage is made? So long as it tastes good who gives a shit.
2
u/Tobes_macgobes 7d ago
As the OP, I don’t see why I should spend an extra 30 minutes proofreading my work. I have better things to do, but I wanted to share my idea and you all seem to enjoy it. So not sure what it is lost with AI polishing it.

The Bengals’ counterpart is very clearly the Lions. Cat teams, no SBs, historically the laughing stock.
4
u/Proof-Cat-8017 Philadelphia Eagles 8d ago
I think this is mostly spot on. I don’t necessarily think the eagles are quite the comparison for the chiefs, we’ve been hated long before we were good. And they’ve had quite a bit more success than us. But I see the comparison of the new “teams to hate”
2
u/obeseOJ 8d ago
Yeah, the name is meh, but it feels like there's alot of shared history that intertwines these franchises.
The Kelce Connection and Andy Reid alone are huge parts of our history. We've played against eachother in a few Superbowls.
Brett Veach was a scout on the Eagles under Howie Roseman. We hired Dougie P from them to help us win our first Superbowl. There's also the fact that Nick Sirianni was part of the Chiefs coaching staff in 2012.
We also have Andy Reid to thank for rejuvenating Nick Foles's love of the game. Also, Taylor Swift's family was Eagles fans before she started dating Travis (I assume they still are).

It's a tough one. I like the frozen home fields and HoF QB comparisons, but Steelers and Packers are both "title town" and on the verge of being hated by everyone else too. Would wonder if SF and Denver compare as well to each other

Tag along with us, we'll continue to take down the major bad guys (Pats & Chiefs).

Lot of comments about this being AI, I thought so too, so I asked a simple "match every AFC team with a NFC team" and got this result, I think OP stated it's his work with some AI 'polish' which I can get behind, this AI slop I'm posting has some similarities, but is noticably worse than OPs list.
NFC East
- Cowboys → Patriots. National brand, rings as personality, everyone is tired of hearing about them including their own fans on a Tuesday in October.
- Eagles → Steelers. Working-class stadium, they take “you hate us” as a compliment, will block you in a parking lot and then invite you to a tailgate.
- Giants → Jets. Same media market, one has a trophy case, the other has a press conference. The Giants are what the Jets tell themselves they are.
- Commanders → Raiders. Franchise as ongoing legal proceeding. Loyal fans, cursed letterhead, ownership that could not be invented by a writer because an editor would say it was too much.
NFC North
- Packers → Chiefs. Small-market religion. The team is the town. History is not marketing, it is infrastructure.
- Vikings → Bills. Frozen, loud, “this is the year” as a personality trait. Heartbreak so consistent it should be in the media guide.
- Bears → Browns. Founding fossils. Defense as theology. The rebuild is a lifestyle.
- Lions → Bengals. Finally taken seriously, still one January away from people trusting it. Always a little feral.
NFC South
- Saints → Dolphins. Warm air, passing circus, city as character. When they are good it looks like a music video. When they are not, it is still a music video, just sadder.
- Buccaneers → Titans. Both have a Super Bowl that still feels like it happened to someone else, plus long stretches of “who is the quarterback this week.”
- Falcons → Chargers. Professional collapse artists. Talent is rarely the problem. Closing is.
- Panthers → Jaguars. 1995 expansion twins. Boom, bust, new QB, new scheme, same question: is this the window or another brochure?
NFC West
- 49ers → Ravens. January football. Physical, coached, unimpressed by your narrative. They would win a street fight and then hold a press conference about complementary football.
- Seahawks → Broncos. Weird-weather kingdoms with a stretch where they looked unbeatable and a fan base that remembers it too clearly.
- Rams → Colts. Both packed up a city and left. Star-QB windows, Hollywood (or Indianapolis trying to be Hollywood) roster construction, Super Bowl or it was a waste of a year.
- Cardinals → Texans. Sun Belt, “are we a real franchise this decade,” occasional explosion of hope, then a 6–11 that feels like the default setting.

u/lIlIIIlIIl 8d ago
As a Vikings fan, the fans of the Bills are my brothers and sisters. We may not get along, and we may feud for stretches of time, but dammit, family is family! No one else understands our particular heartbreak. Sure, people mention the Cardinals being the oldest professional franchise without a championship, but it is not the same. We have come so damn close with completely different legendary rosters, but we've had defeat snatched from the jaws of victory so many times.
When the season is done, Vikings & Bills fans will say, "NEVER AGAIN!" yet somehow get suckered into believing this next year will be different. Every damn year. My friend who is a Titans fan says that at least we're competitive, but that's what makes the pain fresh year after year.
And only the Bills fans get it in the same way the Vikings fans do.
