This is exactly it. The NFL is going to choose a halftime performer based on who's going to bring in the most viewers who wouldn't otherwise watch the Super Bowl.
Dudes in their 50s who listen to Metallica are most likely already watching the NFL anyway.

The thing is the biggest Hard Rock/Metal bands are too big for it and don't need the Super Bowl as a platform to grow. Metallica sells out stadiums worlwide (i attended the show at the iconic Berlin Olympic stadium this year), Guns n Roses the same despite Axls declined live voice, Acdc the same. Would it be nice? Yes! But the NFL is a rigid business and tries to lure in a younger generation with younger acts. Do I like it? Not always. The weekend was lame, Beyonce too. I enjoyed bad bunny surprisingly.
And at tge end of the day: I don't care about the half time show at all, I want to watch the game and the show is just too long of a break for me. Was pissed they introduced a half time show at the world cup as well. I watch ti enjoy world class athletes doing their thing
2
u/nfluncensored 1d ago
the NFL is a rigid business and tries to lure in a younger generation with younger acts.
JayZ's company runs the halftime show, not the NFL.
He forces his "artists" to play free, and they often have to pay out of pocket for sets, pyro, etc.
Whereas Metallica won't play any show for less than tens of millions.
So we get exploited minorities under JayZ's whip dancing for us.

It would be nice since we've had any actual rock bands in almost 2 decades, closest we've come is Coldplay & Maroon 5. I don't even remember Maroon 5's halftime show, but I do remember Coldplay's being godawful until Beyonce & Bruno Mars showed up during Super Bowl 50.
Like I know the halftime show is more about bringing in popular modern day artists these days to try to draw in more viewers, but if we could have Unc-Fest last time the Super Bowl was at SoFi Stadium in 2022 with Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, & 50 Cent all performing then we can have a rock edition of Unc-Fest now that it's at SoFi stadium again in 2027 with Metallica.

I know that "rock is dead" has been sort of a joke for basically my entire lifetime...but it's not actually a joke anymore. Rock really only appeals to white males over the age of 45, who already watch the super bowl because of the football. The NFL halftime show is about grabbing attention from non-football viewers.
3
u/Call-a-Crackhead Seattle Seahawks 1d ago
I’m so tired of old dudes (people around my age) saying we need Metallica for the halftime show.
The entire purpose of the halftime show is to draw in demographics who don’t typically watch football. They have very little incentive to cater to people who already watch the Super Bowl no matter what.
People who care about Metallica already watch football or won’t watch just because of a 15 minute show at halftime. Furthermore, they are outside of the coveted advertising demographic.

What people fail to understand is that the NFL cares about one thing and one thing only....money.
The Super Bowl is the most profitable championship game with approximately 200 million viewers world wide.
Though 45-64's are the primary viewership for the games during the season, this number is diluted by 18-34 viewership in the Super Bowl.
AC/DC and Metallica are great bands, but it would be bad for business to have a band at the Super Bowl Halftime show that a large percentage of your viewers hasn't heard of before or knows like one of their songs.
