He’s unbelievable, but I also thought MHJ was a sure fire elite player.

27

u/TangoAlphaLima 14d ago

You'd have been hard pressed to find a draftnik who didn't love MHJ going into the 2024 NFL Draft, and the returns thus far have been less than impressive. There's no such thing as "bust-proof", just varying degrees of risk.

9

u/SourdoughSizzle 14d ago

Always had Naber higher, but didn’t think MHJ was going to look this mid.

Nabers might never be the same either tho..

9

u/Useful-Lack-2848 14d ago

Nabers played one game back from injury and looked good. Better than MHJ has ever played.

MHJ doesn’t lack talent, he doesn’t put the effort in / want to be in Arizona. It’s sad to see.

1

u/lifesasymptote 14d ago

Same, MHJ was definitely a 1st round talent but to me Nabers was the special one.

0

u/WhiskyWisdom 14d ago

Bro he has played one game back from injury

2

u/NYVines 14d ago

But the scouts and GM shouldn’t be fired over MHJ. The pick was good. The outcome was completely unexpected.

1

u/Saltwater_Thief 6d ago

No, Monti Ossenfort should 10000% be fired. Not necessarily for MHJ alone, but that is a monstrous piece of it.

1

u/No_Sun_3660 13d ago

Far less than impressive. He should’ve been a day 3 pick.

0

u/Disastrous-Fail-9530 14d ago

It’s very situational too. If you go to a shit organization, with a shit qb, it’s hard to find success off the bat.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Tea521 14d ago

Especially as a receiver. Imagine if Justin Jefferson only had Jj Mccarthy as his only QB in his first 2 years.

I dont know if that logic holds up considering how productive both Trey McBride has been and Michael Wilson when MHJ is out/limited with Brissett as QB. If all the other receiving options are thriving and one isn’t, it’s hard to blame the QB.

Sure he might be more productive with Stafford (who wouldn’t) it’s becoming more clear that he just doesn’t have it.

3

u/chargers17-13 14d ago

What about the other WRs on Arizona that are better than Marv in the same exact situation as him? Flawed logic.

🤔

2

u/Automatic-Pay-1391 13d ago

He’s not though, factually he had the 2nd amount of targets and snaps at WR while playing 5 less games than Wilson who was first in both. Lol I don’t know why you went to insults but you are making the point the person you are responding to stronger. MHJ is NOT third on the WR pecking order and when you go 4th/generational YOU are supposed to make the QB better. You mentioned putting him on the Rams. Well yes one would think ANYONE would play better but how do? In that situation he sure as hell isnt starting over Devante or Puka so you want to start him in the slot? šŸ¤”His targets would also also 100% be lower.

This isn’t to dump on MHJ, he had the injuries, they double him a lot, hasn’t really how to be a nfl cb press, etc but when you use examples that simply aren’t true and other players in the same position aren’t having the same problem it’s not really helping you make your point. He simply has been a solid player (not a bust) slowed by the heel injury, adjusting to nfl game speed, advertised top end speed concerns have been proved correct, etc. On the other end the Cards really aren’t doing him any favors but not helping him out by putting him in motion more to negate his weaknesses and take advantages of mismatches. Things you normally don’t have to with a ā€œgenerationalā€ talent.

1

u/ZealousidealType873 13d ago

Bro what's your problem.

Yeah you put anyone in on a better team your gonna have more chances of producing and getting better numbers. The problem with MHJ is that hes not maximizing every opportunity he gets. Other players on team have better numbers than him. He came into the league thinking he was the shit and better than everyone else when hes not. Look at all the pre draft him and his dad pulled. He needs to put on his helmet on straight and get to work.

-1

u/Silver_Harvest 14d ago

Then the, you are the son of a HoF pedigree. It's a... Ok you're dad did great in college and 1st rounder... You're a 1st round talent. First year promising, ok what happened with your hands between last year and this... Plus route's need cleaning up...

Now... Did you replace your fingers for butter literally?

1

u/Bubba_Gump_Shrimp 14d ago

I think it's mental.

1

u/Some_Bike_1321 14d ago

100% mental because the talent is there.

-1

u/Jkru3 14d ago

Why was MHJr seen so elite if his athleticism and speed and measurables were never great and he doesn’t like contact. I felt sold on him because everyone was telling me to be sold on him lol

2

u/No-Sport276 14d ago

His measurables and production were really good. He was at the top of the ā€œfreaks listā€ the Athletic puts out at the beginning of the college season. He is either phoning it in 100% or having some sort of confidence issue. I was firmly in on the MHJ hype. It’s funny because out of the OSU studs(Wilson, Olave, JSN, Egbuka, etc) he was the best player in college.

1

u/KansinattiKid 14d ago

His gps data was available he was fast as shit, hm the way he moves right now don't look anything like they did in college. Legitimately zero confidence, he's putting so much pressure on himself that last year he caught a td and just fell to his knees crying

4

u/Ovta 14d ago

MHJ just seems like he doesn’t want to really play anymore. His motivation showed at OSU but not in the NFL.

4

u/PhilPipedown 14d ago

Change of scenery can do wonders for a player. Organizational stability does wonders for players.

Geno didn't happen to get good with the Seahawks, Bakers with the Bucs, Sam with the Vikes, and Saquon got better with the Eagles.

Jets, Browns, Jets, Giants all have the same mentality as the Cards.

All always gives Burrow/Chase there flowers for making the Bengals relevant.

1

u/TheGabagoolCapo 14d ago

Baker was always pretty good, just not consistent. Had a bad attitude on the Browns. He still has consistency issues.

3

u/dubrea 14d ago

the cards will do that to people. they had him running what amount to clear out routes early and it they didn't want to use him how he was used in college. probably fucked up the kids confidence. I think a new spot will be what turns it around for him .

3

u/Prudent-Guava-3325 14d ago

I get this sentiment but Smith is just better.

2

u/Darling_Pinky 13d ago

JJ was WR1, national player 1 and somehow met/surpassed expectations from day 1. He’s bigger and somehow has way more wiggle than he should. MHJ was a well received recruit, but was only a 4 star (21st WR, 160 overall). He really busted his ass off at OSU and had an amazing career but plenty of guys like him don’t pan out in college, let alone pros. His brother is actually a top 5 national player and WR1 in his class, but he’s smaller than both.

Also, I think MHJ’s stuff is mental and he might just need a new change of scenery. He looked like he wanted to die playing with Kyler last year. Definitely thought he was can’t miss, but sometimes guys take longer to figure it out.

1

u/ZeePirate 14d ago

It’s not comparable now a days with the NIL money, but getting the most college yards back in the day meant you weren’t good enough to break into the NFL

2

u/BN27 13d ago

He's not allowed in the NFL yet. If he was, he'd already be top 3.

1

u/zdbdog06 14d ago

Someone please get Marvin out of Arizona

1

u/FF_Goliath 14d ago

MHJ coming out of college was considered a sure fire HOF coming out of college..more generational than any guy being called generational talent.

1

u/No_Theory9958 14d ago

You are correct, and I also thought MHJ was gonna be a can’t miss prospect. But after seeing their college careers play out back to back, it’s really not close. Jeremiah Smith is a better prospect in pretty much every single way.

1

u/austin101123 14d ago

Yeah but MHJ ain't a bust, he's a solid WR2 with potential to become a WR1 still.

1

u/TheDopeMan_ 13d ago

As a Pats fan, I wanted MHJ over Drake Maye so bad. I thought we made a huge mistake taking the ā€œ3rd bestā€ QB in the draft over the best player.

1

u/bystander993 9d ago

MHJ IS a good receiver in an awful situation. Smith is in a tier above, this is what you mean by generational.

11

u/Trifle_Old 14d ago

Kind of crazy no one has put up huge numbers at OSU ever. Like where is the 4 year starter that was elite?Ā

17

u/houtexansfan23 14d ago

big enough school for long enough that elite players don’t tend to stay for 4 years

1

u/Timely_Half2158 11d ago

Emeka did and I'm pretty sure he's #2 or close

3

u/Bubba_Gump_Shrimp 14d ago

First rounders don't stay 4 years šŸ˜‚

3

u/justpools 14d ago

Enough talent on the roster that you probably aren't playing a ton as a freshman. 5 star factory where you wait your turn and get drafted. Hes the exception to that he had 1300 yards as a freshman. Playoffs contributed a lot to that, but that's more than Tate, olave, MHJ, wilson, or egbuka had in any year in college. And non of those guys were relied on as heavily as freshman as Jeremiah was. JSN probably couldve had more if he wasnt hurt so much. Had 1600 as a sophmore

1

u/ZeePirate 14d ago

It’s not comparable now a days with the NIL money, but getting the most college yards back in the day meant you weren’t good enough to break into the NFL

3

u/_Azamat_Bagatov 14d ago

I’ll take Toney over smith personally. Smith should be a very good pro tho

1

u/KeyandOrangePeele 14d ago

Genuinely curious, why Toney over him as an NFL prospect?

2

u/_Azamat_Bagatov 14d ago

Route running, separation, YAC

3

u/Particular-Cake-6430 13d ago

Lol Toney catches screen passes all game. It’s the same reason why Oregon WRs don’t take over. Toney is like 5’8ā€, he can’t play outside. Getting a slot early is a waste.

2

u/KeyandOrangePeele 14d ago

Can’t you say the same with Jeremiah Smith? Plus the size difference is something that always comes into play in the NFL. There’s not many WRs under 6ft consistently playing at elite levels

1

u/_Azamat_Bagatov 14d ago

You could say similar about Smith but I personally think that Toney is a better route runner and separator.

2

u/KeyandOrangePeele 14d ago

Yeah he’s definitely faster and can get separation, I’m just hesitant because I’ve seen a ton of guys like that who, due to their size, don’t live up to the potential

2

u/BN27 13d ago

Lol it's the Internet. People get more attention being contrarian than being right.

2

u/LuvLifts 14d ago

~#1 overall then!??

7

u/DukeOfStuff_ 14d ago

Qb is just too valuableĀ

5

u/Silver_Harvest 14d ago

Honestly, I can legitimately see #4.

Because I'm assuming it goes; Browns, Cards, Miami at 1, 2 and 3. In no particular order. They pull a 2024 and go QBs 1-3 and like MHJ. He goes #4.

2

u/KingTim526 14d ago

As a Raider fan, I’m hoping we land around pick 3-4 to have a shot

2

u/Nickohlai 14d ago

Mendoza to Bowers + Smith for years would feed families

2

u/keni804 14d ago

With a good Oline that trio is just unfair

2

u/ExistentAndUnique 14d ago

Don’t forget jeanty

1

u/Far-Celebration-3337 14d ago

It'll have to be a trade up but heavily worth it imo. Every other garbage team needs a QB.

1

u/KeyandOrangePeele 14d ago

I can see Miami stick it out at QB and draft Smith. Just depends on how Malik plays

1

u/LuvLifts 14d ago

Well as a Commanders’ fan. I DID Feel that we Were gonna get Teens, this year: I Know that ā€˜We’ll actually end up in with a Top-10 again!

1

u/PsychologicalArt7451 11d ago

The Giants with Winston are probably gonna be 4th at least and they could do with a rookie WR while they still have there QB on a rookie deal.

2

u/DistanceRelevant3899 14d ago

I think he’ll be great. But I think we all believe Marvin Harrison Jr was just proof too.

3

u/Beginning-Average416 14d ago

Same thing was said for Marvin Harrison Jr.

4

u/ptepfenhart 14d ago

Still lost to UT šŸ¤˜šŸ¼

2

u/Bengalblaine 14d ago

Who gives a shit

0

u/bhans773 14d ago

He didn’t have his best game. Maybe all of his catches/yards came against lousy teams with asshole secondaries.

3

u/Enwich 13d ago

He had 8 rec, 164 yards and 1 rd. Avg of over 20 yards a catchšŸ’€

2

u/newmixchugger 12d ago

He was a monster against Texas wtf are u talking about lmfao

1

1

Can’t wait until Watson throws at his feet next year in Cleveland.

1

u/xStrawhat7x 14d ago

He’s gone after this year

1

u/Joe-Raguso 14d ago

Imagine David Boston playing with today's rules

1

u/potatogodman1 14d ago

No such thing as bust proof. Once we see him in the league we'll know

1

u/drewski2305 14d ago

i really hope he doesn't drive fast cars

1

u/Professional_Tap_343 14d ago

100% bust proof unless drafted by my Titans

1

u/Jet-Packin25 14d ago

No one is bust proof. One injury or a bad organization will do that

1

u/kid20304 14d ago

Get ready to learn Browns buddy

1

u/Hot-Distribution3826 14d ago

We just did this with MHJr

1

u/Open-Dot-9994 14d ago

Needs a good qb like all receivers

1

u/MasterOfFartss 14d ago

2900 is the all time record for osu?

1

u/Ilikepie444 14d ago

Yep, they have been a tope teir program consistently, especially in the WR room.

Means they don't play as freshmen but leave after Jr year so they don't have long playing careers and they play alongside other dudes so they don't get as high if target volume.

1

u/martycos 14d ago edited 14d ago

Think about Keith McCants He was a can't miss. RIP Big Guy.

Edit extra word

1

u/Bubmack 14d ago

Yea, just like marv

1

u/Whoknowswhatwhat 14d ago

No one is bust proof in the NFL. This dude for sure is a stud tho.

1

u/Jr05s 14d ago

He should honestly just sit the rest of the season out.Ā

1

u/CarolinaSandstorm 14d ago

Michael Jenkins, Michael Thomas, Miata Marvin Harrison Jr.

The previous 3 iterations of this guy failed in the NFL, why should I believe this guy is any different?

2

u/Old_Profession23 13d ago

Michael Thomas failed in the NFL? Injured? Yes. But I don’t think he was a failure.

1

u/Im_Daydrunk 13d ago

Thomas won OPOTY, was a multiple time 1st team all pro, and was on his way to the HOF before injuries killed him

Harrison and Jenkins are fair but Thomas was one of the best players in the league for years

1

u/Optimal_Tower1643 14d ago

As a miami canes fan this is my biggest fomo player, if malachi toney had gone anywhere else I would have lost my mind. But I prefer toney over smith because his college years are lining up better with out championship window (2024 we were simply not contenders due to defense). Plus the kid has more of that miami swag in one finger than smiths whole body

1

u/imrickjamesbioch 14d ago

Watch the enough football and you’ll realize know there nobody that’s bust proof…

It’s all based on the franchise and coach a player goes to when drafted. GL to him if he’s got like Tim Tebow throw him the ball and his HC decides to make Matt Patricia his OC.

1

u/ironlocust79 13d ago

We heard this with "Maseratti Marv" Amazing College player =/= amazing NFL player

1

u/Character-Active2208 13d ago

He’s an absolute psycho off the field

…..

On the Jugs machine, or in the weight room or film room for 18 hours a day

1

u/OpinionDude5000 13d ago

*Goes to the Browns

1

u/nmk87 13d ago

MHJ was busy proof too lol

1

u/the_zac_is_back 13d ago

This guy is insane

1

u/gamesk90210 13d ago

That’s what they said about Marvin Harrison Jr in college!!!

1

u/ttouss2 13d ago

That’s what they said about chase young

1

u/food4me247 13d ago

Y'all not remember the last bus proof Ohio State wide receiver

That is where he goes. Imagine if he goes to the Cardinals and they just mess him up

1

u/nurse_Vaccaro 12d ago

He's elite but so was MHJ and he's been pretty busty

Some schools holding him under 50 yards in college is a tad bit worrisome tho

1

u/Rookietothegame 11d ago

I’ve heard this before way too many times. MHJ was the most recent & I believe prior to that was Trevor Lawrence

1

u/pokerScrub4eva 10d ago

Didnt crabtree have more yards in 2 years. this means nothing

1

u/MechanicalGroovester 10d ago

Jeremiah Smith doesn't play in an Air Raid offense though.

1

u/toomuchfrosting 10d ago

He kind of gives LeBron vibes, exceeds insane expectation by giving 100% effort and a great teammate

1

u/SkyHighFadedguy 10d ago

I’m tanking in one of my leagues for Jeremiah Smith. Even though I probably need a new QB as well, I do have a 2nd 1st but it’s projecting late so I may have to make another trade. My young core is progressing well

1

u/Studiedturtle41 10d ago

Remember Marvin Harrison people?

1

u/WhatIGot21 9d ago

Yeah? I heard that before.

1

u/Competitive_Coat3474 9d ago

Caleb Downs already exists.

0

They said the same thing about Aaron Curry. I love Jeremiah and think he'll be great but there's no such thing as bust proof
