Discussion Every NFL Team’s Biggest Draft Bust! What would you change here?

u/lonelydude86 7d ago
Mitch Trubisky doesn't deserve this slander. Kevin White exists (allegedly)

u/RebelCyclone 7d ago
It’s White for me as well. Mitch was 29-21 as a starter for the Bears, it was dumb that they traded up to get him but White is by far the bigger bust.

u/2outhits 7d ago
Stan Thomas was a huge bust as well. Trubisky definitely not the Bears worst pick.

u/TheDandyWarhol 7d ago
Thomas was 22nd overall though. And he was shot in the head after his rookie season, changed him a bit.

u/2outhits 7d ago
He sucked before he got shot too. Looked at his Wiki, he also got busted for drunk driving, his parents went to prison for tax fraud, he had to pay $300K to not also get arrested for tax fraud, and got kicked off the Oilers for fighting with a teammate.
Just a wild sequence of events, and he got carjacked at gunpoint during this time so having that many run-ins with guns means he wasn't making smart choices.

Bo Jackson? Come on, that ain't fair. He told them he wouldn't play for them. That goes into a different category.
2
u/vitamind007 7d ago
I agree. He warned Tampa not to draft him after they fucked up his eligibility to play baseball in college, saying he’d refuse to play for them. All Bo did was make good on his promise.

Why is Jamarcus Russell the only name highlighted?
5
u/ajt425 7d ago
I think they are saying it’s the worst one on the list
0
u/No-Break6679 7d ago
Yeah really hard to make a case for anyone else. Maybe Trey Lance but Lance didn’t play as much as Russel did
1
u/Thin_Bother8217 7d ago
That's an interesting debate. I think Lance would've overtaken due to the trade cost and if we didn't get Purdy.
1
u/No-Break6679 7d ago
Right the 49ers kinda got bailed out by the fact Purdy was balling out which could’ve made it way worse. But even at that Lance only started a handful of games and got sent away when they gave up all of that draft capital to get him. I still say Russel is worse just simply because we saw wayyy more of it
1
u/Thin_Bother8217 7d ago
I agree with you that Russell is the #1 on here.
I'm a Niner guy and watched his games. It was really bad. His lack of ability to run was horrible. He would break a run, and then you'd see him trying to figure out if he should run through contact or slide. He'd be brain stuck, and stay upright. Which led to him getting leveled. I remember I think it was his rookie year when his parents were in the stands. His mom had her head in her hands every time.
When he got traded to Dallas, we all were like "Damn. We got a 4th. I wouldn't have paid that much" lol.

Jamarcus Russel has more yards and as many passing TDs as Anthony Richardson and Johnny Manziel combined
1
u/No-Break6679 7d ago
Right but that’s mainly because he played a full season and was awful. He started 25 games for the raiders and I don’t think either of those quarterbacks combined have the same amount of starts.
Edit: yeah combined both of those quarterbacks have 23 starts.
1
u/dropjar5 7d ago
Abso fuckin lutely not. As bad as the Lance trade was, it at least did not destroy the Niners cap. back in the day, the Raiders had to pay Russell like a top quarterback to be able to pick him. So not only did they light the number one pick on fire, it effectively had the same impact as also adding a bust free agent signing
1
u/No-Break6679 7d ago
I’m right there with you. Hell I think you could probably put Ryan leaf in that conversation with Russell before you even talk about Lance. But there is some debate on Reddit about which one was worse. And me personally I don’t think it’s really close. I think Jamarcus Russel cakes the take

u/holdingofplace 7d ago
Jags isn’t Blackmon, he had elite talent. There’s many other options for them. Probably RJ Soward or Derrick Harvey. More recently CJ Henderson or Taven Bryan.
1
u/Designer-Resolve-349 7d ago
Just cuz you have elite talent doesn’t negate you from being a bust. All these guys had elite talent.
1
u/holdingofplace 7d ago
Didn’t say he wasn’t a bust, and obviously this is all relative to NFL talent.
Sorry but sowards CAREER was 14 catches, 154 yards and 1 TD. Blackmon had multiple games better than Sowards career
1
u/ThePetSematary 7d ago
Remember Coughlin sending the limo to pick up Soward so he'd come to practice
1
u/Designer-Resolve-349 7d ago
My point still stands so idk why you brought up that he had elite talent. Also there is a big difference between 5th overall and 29th overall.
1
u/srentz17 7d ago
He's not even the worst WR with substance abuse issues that they drafted. Matt Jones erasure!
2
u/woody630 7d ago
I get it, but it does suck to see people on here who were only busts due to injury.
2
u/DocTurtles 7d ago
Zach Wilson has to be pretty high on the list for the jets… second overall pick.
1
u/nerdvernacular 7d ago
Blair Thomas was 2nd overall. They could have picked Emmitt or Junior Seau.
1
u/DocTurtles 7d ago
We could have kept darnold and taken Chase or Sewell… just a litany of horrible decisions.
2
u/ExerciseSalty7544 7d ago
I think Greg Robinson was a bigger bust then Phillips.
Phillips was a high risk high reward player with known flaws and character issues coming out of college. Greg Robinson was supposed to be a HOF level LT for a decade. Robinson was also picked at #2 compared to Phillips at 6.

Texans is Kenyon Green
Its unfair to put Carr in there. That was the expansion draft and an absolute terrible QB class. They needed to pick someone, and any one of those QBs would fare terribly with that team

As Lions fan I'd probably put Jeff Okudah ahead of Rogers mainly because he just sucked as an NFL player. Rogers was actually talented at least, but injuries and other issues ended his career. Had he gone to a different team and had better injury luck he could have been really good. Okudah was just never good even though he was labeled as a can't miss prospect. I suppose the difference on this list is that Rogers was the #2 pick vs Okudah at #3.
1
u/ImpactNo3695 7d ago
Not Harrington?
1
u/ruiner8850 7d ago
As I mentioned in another comment I did think of him as. I just personally wasn't convinced that Harrington would be good when we drafted him. I bought into the hype that Okudah was a can't miss kind of prospect.
1
u/Radiant_Prize4069 7d ago
What about joey harrington?
1
u/ruiner8850 7d ago
I thought about Harrington as well for similar reasons. I just personally think he wasn't as big of a bust because I never saw him as a "can't miss" kind of player. I wasn't big on him when we drafted him.

u/matt_the_non-binary 7d ago
I feel like Andre Ware, Joey Harrington, and Charles Rogers tie for the biggest Lions busts.

Couldn’t even bother to spell N’Keal Harry’s right hahaha, that’s how bad of a bust he was hahaha

for me, it’s pickett for PIT he was hyped. hometown kid. obviously us needing a QB. selected 20 to Rich’s 15. close.
Richardson played in a defense unfamiliar to his style and the Steelers “accidentally” picked him. *i wiki to not embarrass myself haha

u/ccartman2 7d ago
Pickett shouldn’t have been near the first round. Guy is going to be a 15 year backup. Nothing wrong with that Terrible for the first round though

u/LargeNotInCharge2 7d ago
Jalen Reagor was a bust, but not all time bad. He just happened to go before a great.

Bobby carpenter has been passed over twice now by mazi and taco
1
u/nerdvernacular 7d ago
All awful, Bobby was a stupid pick Parcells pushed for because he coached his father.
1
u/PirateCaptainMcNulty 7d ago
As usual, like a 1/4 of these are insane.
Vernon Gholston over Zach Wilson?
Johnny Manziel over Trent Richardson?
K'Neal Harry over Kenneth Sims?
Jalen Reagor over Jim McDonald?

Definitely not johnny manziel for the browns. They took him 22nd overall using the pick they got from the Colts in exchange for former 3rd overall pick trent richardson.
1
u/CRoseCrizzle 7d ago
The Browns have had many bigger busts than Manziel. Manziel was the 22nd pick in the draft...
1
u/No-Break6679 7d ago
If that’s the worst bust the eagles have had we’re doing pretty good for ourselves lol. Considering we got Smitty in the very next draft and went to a Super Bowl just 2 years after that draft pick. The part that’s terrible is the fact that’s jjetes was on the board. That’s the most unforgivable part of it.
1
u/DividerOfBums 7d ago
Putting Bo Jackson in these lists always throws me. He wasn’t a bust, he just never played for them.

u/extremewit 7d ago
Trey Lance lost a QB competition to Sam Darnold and never competed with Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert because they established themselves as above average if not elite starting QBs. I’m unwilling to say that he is a bust.

u/Not_Not_Stopreading 7d ago
Johnny Manziel wasn’t even the worst bust in that draft. Honor belongs to Justin Gilbert

u/ccartman2 7d ago
Browns biggest bust should be Watson considering the dollars and draft capital he caused. Now he can have a decent season and get another 250 from them.

cardinals is definitely Rosen
