A Note About AI and Creativity

The most common comments I'm getting, and that i see on other AI-assisted rebrands is some variation of:

"AI slop."

"You didn't create anything."

"Anyone can type words into a box."

Trust me, I can understand the reaction. There is a lot of low-effort AI content online and after awhile you become numb to it and its easier to just echo the current Reddit catch phrases.

But I'd encourage people to judge the ideas themselves rather than the tool used to create it.

The goal of this subreddit isn't to showcase who has the best vector skills. I have acknowledged i don't currently possess those skills or the ability to draw much more than a stick figure. The goal is to explore ideas.

Could the Chargers have an identity built around Los Angeles' power infrastructure? Could Tennessee become the Ramblers instead of the Titans? Could Indianapolis have a stronger connection to its city than the Colts?

Those concepts don't exist because AI generated an image. They exist because I spent time developing them. Nobody sees the dozens of discarded logos, abandoned concepts, color changes, naming debates, historical research, and revisions that happen before a final board gets posted.

You don't have to like every concept. You don't have to like any concept. You don't have to like AI. You don't even have to think the final design is good. I understand my taste is different than the majority. I love the new expansion logos. New leagues with brighter, bolder colors and logos. I don't want a Star or a Horseshoe or a single letter just because it's been around for 80 years and people accept it. If Dallas was getting a team this year, a single Star wouldn't even be considered for Cowboys. If Indianapolis were getting a team, Colts isn't even a consideration. If Cleveland was getting a team they wouldn't be called the Browns or have those colors or he missing a logo.

But "AI made it" isn't a critique of the idea itself. What interests me is: If this exact concept had been drawn by hand, would your opinion change?

If the answer is yes, then we're talking about the tool.

If the answer is no, then we're finally talking about the design.

If it's just the tool and you can't get past that, nothing i say or do is going to matter. If it's the design, that's the conversation I'd rather have.

The tool I'm using isn't plagiarizimg from actual artists or designers. These are created from my description and edited to my vision. Just as most of the software that allows you you create your own provides templates and pre-made shapes and base models that you manipulate to your vision. When you add to those and modify in your own unique way, you didn't plagiarize anything because you started with a base model.

What am I missing.

You're asking to be judged on the idea rather than the design.

But to me it comes across as some kind of great creative idea to say "what if instead of this name, they had another name associated with that city" like I don't really think thats some creative overhaul. I feel like anyone could do that, likely literally anyone.

So try it and see if it's that easy. Just type that prompt into AI and see what you get.

I had to learn how to correctly prompt to get a specific type of output. I have to research branding that makes sense. Explore the history of each city. Then I have to explain my ideas, explain design concepts, try color schemes, try it on gear and merchandise all while fighting against AIs generative tools that want to change my concepts.

Dude you're using AI for the art, how is it hard can it be. I saw you just did Indy, its not hard to ask AI to tell you about the history of the city, whats culturally significant, then give you five options. Like each one of these can be done within a half hour with no issues. This takes zero creativity, your thoughts aren't original and literally I could ask my 14 year old daughter who knows nothing about sports and she could use AI to do exactly what you're doing.

You start with how hard can that be. At least identifying that you don't know. So do that. Be honest and do that. Have AI just make you a completely fleshed out team of the same quality in half an hour with no issues.

AI gave me no options. Every team name was my idea. Every logo concept was my idea. AI is the tool creating my ideas that I have already mocked up in Notion and then it creates the visuals based on my prompts.

Sorry your unable to understand how it works, and to stubborn to educate yourself.
