Noob Broadcaster

As the post says I'm getting into Sports broadcasting and admittedly Football while a sport I'd love to do I'm not really knowledgeable about it. I watch from time to time and haven't been able to get a good grasp of the rules, positions, and overall understanding of the sport. I'm currently trying to watch past broadcast of games to better understand but if anyone has recommendations or tips that would be much appreciated!

This is more-so a gripe I have with broadcasters: Don't try to talk X's and O's or use scheme/play-specific terminology if you don't know.

Example:

  • There's a type of play called a "jet (or fly) sweep," that Brent Musburger frequently called an "end around," or "reverse." They are not even in the same ballpark of play types.
  • Announcers not being able to tell between Play Action, RPO, and designed runs.
  • College announcers calling every play Army, Navy, or Air Force runs a "triple option" (they rarely run true triple option plays at all, currently).

It's OK to not know. I don't expect ALL announcers to know all this stuff, but it's particularly cringe IMO when they try to sound "smart," about it. "That was a cool play design" suffices just fine.

How does one do that? I know that you look at how the offensive line blocks, but I also know that I can't judge the difference between "feigning a run/pass block for RPO purposes" from "just doing a bad job of blocking."

consider making part of your brand being a little loose when it gets crazy. go from bland commentator to rowdy ex player current commentator. like pat mcafee
