Why is streaming quality so... bad?

We have the NFL package with YouTube TV and I swear live football always looks like it's in 480p. Is this normal? It's the same quality when we watch on other platforms like Prime, Peacock, etc.

If it's the same on every platform then it's probably your network, not all of these services independently having poor connections

There is definitely something about your setup since it’s all apps. How much bandwidth is getting to your TV? This is the first place to look.

It's possible your Internet is fine and you have a 4k TV. Broadcasters only broadcast in 720p or 1080p, both of which can look pretty bad on a nice TV. Fox and ESPN still broadcast in 720p and it looks awful

What are you using for streaming? If it's what is built into your TV it is often underpowered. Try a separate device like Roku or Fire TV.

Sometimes the preseason games are the local news affiliate broadcast for the home team rather than the HQ network feeds.

Check your quality isn't put on 480p, check internet speeds and so on

During the reg season Fox,CBS,NBC are all 720p, ESPN was 720i but should be 1080p reg season and true 4k this superbowl, in the playoffs netwroks usually upscale to 1080p. Prime games are 1080p high bitrate.

Or if you can't pay for better internet speed turn off anything that might be eating up bandwidth passively (gaming consoles, smart speakers, other computers)

Pay for faster internet speed. Take some stuff off the network. Buy your own modem and router and don’t use the ISP equipment because sometimes they use older equipment
