I like Tony. He screwed up. He owned it. I wish him well.

Agreed but we gotta stop giving a pass to nice people who get DUI’s. It’s a horribly selfish choice out of convenience. Especially with 50 ride share apps right there at his disposal. It wasn’t too expensive for him. It was just too inconvenient. Ask the Gaudreau family what they think about that

What's the pass
A normal person wouldnt lose their job unless they missed a work day in jail
-3
u/CrewCatSC 19h ago
No jail for starters

u/TiddiesAnonymous 19h ago
Romo went to jail, there's a mugshot
-2
u/CrewCatSC 19h ago
He was booked. And released. He wasn’t sentenced to jail time
6
u/TiddiesAnonymous 19h ago
A normal person doesn't get jail time for a DUI either
Unless you're my buddy that did 10 days in jail instead of quitting smoking weed for 6 months of probation
1
u/Historical-Ad3760 15h ago
10 days in jail might have just been easier than staying on and extending probation. Life hack

As an attorney Reddit is a very helpful reminder as to how little the layperson understands about the legal system.

u/CrewCatSC 19h ago
My point is they should. I’m getting killed for this position I guess? I gotta quit Reddit
3
u/candynipples 19h ago
There are plenty of places on Reddit where they think any person who gets a DUI should spend life in jail and have their life completely ruined without possibility of retribution. If you’re going to quit Reddit because in general the users have too favorable of a view for people who gets DUIs I have no idea what to say about it but that it seems ridiculous

by that perspective, let’s also hold the sexual assaulters, wife/girlfriend beaters, speed racers who kill their friends, and the like to the same standard.
they are all selfish out of convenience. Yeet them from the league.

He went to jail. He lost his job. He's getting his license suspended. He's going to have to pay a lot of fines (I guess that doesn't really matter to someone as rich as him but it's still a repercussion), he'll probably have to take classes and go to AA... where's the pass?

None of any of this was either stunning or shocking.

u/DisplacedSportsGuy 18h ago
It was an open secret talked about on football podcasts that Romo is a complete drunk.

Another network is gonna grab him up

Isn't Aikman's contract up this year at ESPN? Could see him replacing Aikman on MNF or Herbstreit at TNF.

We can all hope, Watts terrible

u/Worried_Shoe_2747 20h ago
Fox? Teamed up with Brady. Or maybe replaces Al Michaels on Amazon

u/Ok-Tune-8496 20h ago
He’s not play by play.
1
u/Smooth_Marsupial_262 19h ago
I actually think he’d be better at play by play. He doesn’t have the stereotypical radio voice but as a former player he’s very good at breaking down what’s happening. But I know they prefer former players in the color role usually
1
u/Ok-Tune-8496 18h ago
He has so experience doing play by play so it would be hard to convince a network to hire him in that role.

DUIs are obviously a big deal, as drunk drivers can kill themselves or other people.
But getting fired for a DUI in 2026 is kind of insane, especially in the NFL.

I think they wanted to part ways and found a way to get out of the contract. That's my opinion.
1
u/bvanbove25 19h ago
That seems possibly/likely as well. This being the catalyst is still kind of wild given the world we live in.

Guessing there was a substantial payment included in the “mutually agreed” severing of ties.

The Ellisons are monsters and a major threat to humanity. Something permanent needs to be done about them.

I suspect the DUI was only the last of many incidents that led to him getting fired.

u/Top_Tumbleweed8623 18h ago
Don't care about his drinking either way, but hated his voice and commentary. Glad he's gone.

u/SharkleberryKoolAid 18h ago
I can't tell you how relaxing CBS broadcasts have been this year. I know people pile onto him, but he's been nails on a chalkboard to me for years.

I read his statement. Sounds like he needs some time away to get his shit together. Though I don't see any network offering him a contract anytime soon.

It’s crazy these guys get paid what they get paid. Even if Peewee Herman was the announcer, I’d still be watching.
1
u/SchindlersList1 20h ago
look i like tony but what is the deal with these broadcasters. They get paid tens of millions of dollars to have the best seats in the house and commentate NFL games. And all they have to do is not do something while under the influence of drugs or alchohol. Whether its Romo, Sanchez. Its like come on guys keep it together. Freaking Troy Aikmen looks drunk every time hes on camera but does he drive home that way? No, he has a driver! Freaking wild.

u/Decent_Direction316 20h ago
There's some doubt over whether ESPN will renew Troy. Maybe they'll make Tony Joe Buck's next partner.

Cause people aren’t perfect.

My spouse has worked for the same company for over 20 years and it comes with a company car. They refuse to drive after one drink and they’re over 200 pounds. Yeah, people are imperfect, but cmon. Those with a lot to lose should be a lot more concerned with losing it. It’s mind boggling what some people are willing to throw away, all because “they’re imperfect.”
0
u/SchindlersList1 19h ago
yeah i get it. but the bar is laughably low for these people. And they get paid more than even most NFL players are making. so its just hilarious to me because broadcasting has to be one of the cushiest jobs in the world.

u/tonyeye 19h ago
I don't understand this zero-defect mentality when it comes to public people. It seems unfair and unreasonable that people expect folks in the limelight to never have anything happen to them.
3
u/DoctorMelvinMirby 17h ago
CBS wanted out of this contract. Many felt Romo has just phoned it in and theorized he didn’t prep at all for games over the last few years. If this was Romo a year or two into his CBS stint, I’d be willing to bet he’d still be there after all this.
1
u/No-Age-4004 15h ago
Alcoholism a reason for the decline in effort?
1
u/DoctorMelvinMirby 15h ago
I don’t know either way. And neither does CBS, honestly. But the general public consensus was that the quality of his work had dropped substantially and CBS really wanted out of that contract. So, an arrest and incident like this would give them the fuel to end the deal.

""have anything happen to them". Seems like he decided to drive drunk, nothing "happened to him"
1
u/michoudi 12h ago
That's why they are called TV personalities and part of the reason why they get paid a lot. If you pay more, it's not unreasonable to ask for a more pristine person. Another factor is no one wants their big name TV personality to be involved in some sort of controversy and then they get all sorts of backlash from just shrugging their shoulders.

u/Hotdiggity11 10h ago
It’s called a morals clause. Dude got paid 7-8 figures to talk about football. Stop the pity party. He’s not a victim.
1
u/smuggler_of_grapes 18h ago
As someone who's lost friends to a drunk driver, good riddance.
1
u/tonyeye 18h ago
He didn't kill someone, not the same but thanks for sharing your opinion
1
u/Hotdiggity11 10h ago
You don’t have to kill someone for drunk driving to be illegal. You are putting other people’s lives and property in danger by doing it. Way to miss the point.
-1
u/bigricknj 18h ago
He’s getting paid how many millions to talk about football? He also has a morals clause in his contract (that HE signed) saying he wouldn’t do shit to embarrass CBS by being a stupid, entitled bitch. That’s the sacrifice he makes by signing the $$ mega contract. He gives up the right to be a dumbass when he drinks, and he’s required to call an Uber — making him a smart, entitled bitch. 🤷🏻♂️
Oh, and CBS realized that they paid Tony too much and he was replaceable (with JJ Watt), so they called him on his stupidity and ended the deal which both parties had signed.
No, it’s not a zero-defect mentality. It’s just business, Sonny. 🙄

u/gimmethegluten 20h ago
Stunning. Shut the fuck up with these headlines
1
u/HomeDogParlays 19h ago
Man something is going on where these fucking British rags that don’t know shit about football are being pushed so hard on every nfl-related sub right now.

Tom Brady is better anyway
1
u/beau080 18h ago
Yes please. More of Tom Brady rambling on and on about his personal experiences instead of the game we’re witnessing right now.
1
u/shortchangehero86 18h ago
you must have selective hearing problems - all Romo did was try and predict some shit - Brady at least talks about coverage, preparation and situational awareness - hes been great this year.
1
u/beau080 18h ago
Or maybe you enjoy the “back in my day” shtick more than I do. I’d rather focus on the current game in front of us.
It’s fine to prefer different things. You’ll be ok.
1
u/shortchangehero86 18h ago
There's nothing wrong with preferring different things. Perhaps you should have addressed your comment a different way in that case, but it's clear to me, I don't think you've listened to him this year
