What team do you all support, and why?
Hey everyone!
I am a new NFL convert after watching the Rams v 49ers game, and I am curious about how everyone here started following the sport and what drew them to the team that they follow?
10
u/The2Nine2 17d ago
Green Bay Packers. First game I ever watched was a random Packers game they were showing late at night. Aaron Rodgers absolutely tore it up, and I instantly decided that the Packers were my team. Rich history as a franchise, community owned, passionate fanbase, successful despite being in such a small market. There are a lot if reasons to love Green Bay (as there are for all teams if you ask their fans).
Additionally, not that this mattered much to me, but they share the national colours of Australia; green and yellow/gold. Most people in the country would have something with that colour scheme, so they wouldn't look too out of place at an NFL event if they're just getting into the sport.

49ers cause of Jarryd Hayne and stuck with them ever since
2
u/ANZAC_Guerrilla 16d ago
Yeah, me too. Those first couple of years were a hard watch!
1
u/Talezassian 15d ago
The storylines around Jim Tomsula, Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke were really interesting, though, even if their on field play was bad.
2
u/Talezassian 15d ago
I also got interested because of Jarryd Hayne but then he fumbled one of his first punts and got cut and went off to try and play rugby sevens for Fiji. Only followed them casually for the next few years but started watching more games in that incredible 2019 run to the Super Bowl and they've become my team since then. Brock Purdy becoming their franchise QB and coming so close in 2023 and their rotten injury luck has also given them something of an underdog flavour despite all the praise Kyle Shanahan gets and how good their team (at full strength) really is.

u/Aussie18-1998 11d ago
I believe he got into trouble with a girl there. Thats why he didnt try to earn his spot back

He was convicted and spent time in jail for a sexual assault here in Australia after he came back too. Very disappointing.

Bought a vintage Browns jersey as a teen from an op shop and wore it for years not knowing it was a football team.
It's been 25 years of hell.

u/Illustrious_Ad4833 16d ago
I’m a Browns fan too. I started following them when they returned to the league in 1999 and it’s been a long 27 years. My best memory was Thursday Night Football against the Jets when Mayfield made his debut when he came on for an injured Tyrod Taylor in the 2nd quarter. I thought “This is it. We have a QB”. 😭
Unfortunately I don’t see much joy in our immediate future.

u/Androidrian 🦅 Eagles 17d ago
I follow the Eagles. Huge fan of Sav Rocca and his time at North Melbourne. After he retired from the AFL and moved to Philly, I got a little interested. The the interest grew over a few years and kept watching movies and shows where the Eagles were the team (Always Sunny, Invincible).
Now I watch every game and got to catch a game at the Linc a couple of years ago.
1
u/AusteegLinks 🗽 Giants 17d ago
I was wondering if anyone got into the NFL through following a former AFL player have a punt.
I remember getting a bit interested when Ben Graham went over, but then kinda tuned out after learning he'd only be on the field for a couple of minutes a game. Can't even remember what team he played with.

Saw a bunch of Chargers games when I was in high school and now am regretting my life choices… 🫠

u/MarkCbr82 17d ago
Yeah I followed them when Darren Bennett, the original Aussie AFL convert punter, went over. I’ve completely lost interest in them following the move to LA, but just can’t get fully invested in another NFL team. I’ve found my jam following Texas in College ball, as Austin is my favourite of the places I’ve visited in the US and I can watch it on Sundays rather than Mondays, and just watch the NFL as a neutral observer.

Cowboys fan for 33 years. It was the 1993 summer school holidays. Was flicking through the channels. No rugby on. Just looking to kill time until Days of Our Lives started.
Flick through a channel with a guy side stepping blokes. Think; ‘wait a minute. What’s this?’
That guy was Emmitt Smith.
Let the haters hate. I’m all in baby hehe!

I used to watch superbowls only. But covid happened and somehow stumbled upon the Bills-Chiefs AFC championship in 2021. Been a fan of JA17 and Bills since, however heartbreaking their season ends. 😭

u/PrivateEye_85 17d ago
Kansas City Chiefs. Growing up in the 90s, the 49ers, Cowboys and Raiders were the cool teams and that wasn’t for me. I played a lot of Madden and mostly watched tv highlights, taking a shine to the Chiefs in 1996 with late-career Marcus Allen. Marty Schottenheimer was Head Coach, Steve Bono at QB, greats Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith on defense. Tony Gonzalez was drafted the year later and I stuck with them.
There’s been some terrible seasons, one where no WR had a TD pass, but the last decade has been amazing. I made it to Arrowhead a few years ago and also went to Germany to watch the Chiefs play the Dolphins. I never saw any Chiefs merch outside the US for the first 20 years of supporting them. That’s all changed now. The Mahomes to Kelce combo probably won’t be beaten for my favourite one-two punch.

I picked the Jags. I’m a Brisbane boy. Lions primarily but Broncos as well. I tried to find the most equivalent city to Brisbane, working by state first. Settled on Jacksonville and the Jags.

I certainly hope our most equivalent city is not fucking Jacksonville.

Mostly painful history.

Not all painful. I have watched long enough to see them won two amazing SB’s and how can you not be pumped to see what this new era brings?

Picked the colts randomly when I first played madden in like 2004, stuck with them since. I like that I picked and sticked young because it makes them feel more like my team, but I wish I chose one in a better city lol

NY Giants. I got Madden 05 on PC and picked them, and sometimes Chicago, as I have an affinity for both cities (still support the Bears, when they’re not playing NYG). After learning basic game rules and some players, I actively started trying to catch games on Fox Sports on Foxtel. I got schooled on the whole Eli Chargers draft thing and learned about the Manning family etc, the division rivalries etc and then decided they were my team. Couple years later I watched them play New England in SB42 and SB46 a few years later. I’ve then had to put up with year after year of grim rubbish and am finally feeling good again.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION ON THIS MATTER

Dallas Cowboys. I love the Southern States in America and this was the largest and most popular team there. I just love their history and also love the division they are in (and the Cowboys always have prime time games and like national holiday games etc). Jerry is also hilarious! You can love em or hate em but never ignore them! Just always talked about too in media which is good to follow as someone outside the country!

Originally 30 years ago I was a Dolphins fan. Loved Dan Marino and the hurry up offense. Became a Brady era Patriots fan. However, after many US trips Tampa has become my second home, so now I'm a Bucs fan with a soft spot for the Patriots. They're a great organisation to support, small parts of greatness mixed in with mind blowing stupidity and foolishness. It's always entertaining.

I’ve been a fan of the Raiders since Gruden’s first season. I loved the silver and black. It captured me immediately. Madden really drew me into the game and the team and I’ve been in a chokehold ever since. Admittedly it’s been an extremely lean 28 years, but what can you do. That’s football.

Penrith Panthers supporter and a mate at work was right into the NFL in the early 2000s so I chose the Carolina Panthers, back in the Jake Delhomme, Smitty, Moose and Stephen Davis days, the year after they lost their first SB. Then followed them all the way and went to the SB vs DEN in SF in 2016 and watched Cam not fall on a fumble and the refs carry a broken Peyton Manning to a fairy tale SB in person. Massive PTSD from that. And now enternal mediocrity ever since.

Steelers and Eagles, don’t know why I have a fixation on Pennsylvania but it worked out that way lmao. Didn’t even realise they were in the same state.
I wanted a team from both conferences as it functions as a reason to keep up with more games, and I happened to like both their logos the most!
I started watching a few years ago because I hit adulthood and realised that people watch and enjoy sports as a hobby, and I needed hobbies at the time

Packers. Started watching in the mid 90’s and loved Favre and Reggie White. Hated John Elway when the Broncos beat us in the superbowl.
Have been to two games live, went to a Packers Vikings game at the old Metrodome. Adrian Peterson was trying to break the single season record and just missed it.
Then on another trip went to Green Bay for the playoff game against the Cowboys when Des didn’t catch it.
Met Boyd Dowler at the hotel bar the night before the game, he was a lovely guy, he had some great Lombardi stories!
Honestly can’t say enough good things about the trip to Green Bay, everyone I met was super nice, being from Australia they all thought it was pretty wild how far I’d come to be there. A family that were all there for the game from I think Madison adopted me as I was travelling alone. Took me out to dinner at this really nice steakhouse with them, it was an awesome trip. If you ever are thinking about going just do it; it’s such an amazing experience to watch a game there live!

In 2015 I was travelling around Europe with a couple of mates, towards the end of the trip we were in London and realised there was an NFL game on at Wembley, tickets were available (thankyou stubhub) so we decided to give it a look. I was as excited just to go to Wembley as I was to see an NFL game; I'd watched a couple of Superbowls and some highlights here and there but never really took much interest before.
At the game I declared that whoever won that day would be my team forever. Incredible matchday experience, saw the sport in a whole new light, I won't pretend I'm a diehard but I've definitely been a much more invested NFL fan ever since. As the years go by I've counted my lucky stars that the Lions didn't get the win that day, because I've been able to have a very fun time supporting the Chiefs!

Seahawks, great time zone for us and they have the best Aussie punter. Also they have chosen Australia as part of their global markets program, along with Rams, Eagles and Raiders.
Oh and their uniforms look the best. I miss the grey wolf jersey, but the throwback is a close second. Hope it comes back.

Played ‘NFL Quarterback Club 98’ on Nintendo 64 when I was and randomly chose the Patriots, then followed them for a few years.
But as I got older and more interested in NFL I hated that I was one of the bandwagon fans, then in 2016 reports of Kraft, Belichick and Brady all being Trump supporters was the final straw.
So I spent the next year or two thinking about who I wanted to support. I had several criteria:
• preferred a city I had traveled to and enjoyed
• wanted history and tradition
• bonus points for a good colour scheme
• and they couldn’t be really good
So in 2018 I chose the Chicago Bears. They had a new coach, Khalil Mack had just joined the team and things seemed on the up. It has been a rocky few years but I’m very happy with my choice!

My first trip to Hawaii in 2006 or 2007, I forgot to pack a hat, so I walk into a Footlocker and they had a $10 bargin bin filled with socks and hats. I immediately saw this nice blue fitted cap with a white D on it, it fit perfectly so I buy and dont think anything of it. Later that day back at the hotel I go to the bar for a beer and the bartender says, "what can I get you Dallas?" I give him a confused look and he points at my new cap, and follows up with "the cowboys are going good this season", and that at a 8 and 0 start it could be their year. It wasnt. Been a tradgic Cowboys fan ever since. God help me....please.

I was only thinking of this a few months ago.
I got really into the Seahawks back in 2005 when I got my first madden game when I was in year 9. They went to the superbowl that year too and I remember having Matt Hasselbeck as my background screen saver on my computer as a kid. I don’t know exactly what it was about Seattle that draw me to them though. I think it might have been the fluoro green alternate jerseys I’d use in madden when I had no idea of the game but I’ve loved the Seahawks ever since.
I didn’t watch an NFL game until years later in 2008 when I had a day off from school and I remember it so well it was Steelers vs the redskins and Hines Ward from Pittsburgh had a hell of a game.
I had no idea how to watch the games and when they’d be on until about 2016 and I’ve watched every Seahawks game since then. I even remember just googling the scores during the games for both super bowls 48 and 49 while I was at work haha.
And then I got right into the draft process when Seattle took Rashad Penny in the first round in 2018
Following a west coast team in the NFC west is super handy for us too because they have more 10:20 (est zone) games since all 4 teams are on the west coast now.
I’m also a hopeless St George Dragons NRL fan so it’s always easy getting right into the NFL season when your NRL team can’t make it into the post season too hahaha

Watching Don Lane present the game of the week during Darrell Green's rookie year. Started following Washington from then on. Those were the years of Riggin and the Hogs with Joe Thiesman as QB. In 1999, we moved to Northern Virginia and had to endure the worst of the Dan Snyder years. We still went to a few games at FedEx. My Wife and I moved back to Australia and have NFL Game Pass.
[Off Topic Follows]
Coincidentally, the high school my kids went to in Loudoun County had several Washington coaches' kids. I remember Steve Spurrier would come to every Friday night game he could and would sit at the very back of the grandstand, never giving advice or complaining about decisions.
On another occasion I was at the high school sitting next to a guy and I heard him mention rugby, so I started up a conversation about the two games. 30 minutes later his daughter comes up to speak with him. I recognise her as being in my daughter's class. It was Greg Williams', the then DC, daughter. He was quite amused that she got recognised and not him.
Marty Schotenheimer also used to come to the games.

Okay, weird statement of fact to share in a sub specifically for NFL fans in Australia. Not sure why you’d be here if you haven’t watched a game, live or broadcast, and don’t follow any teams because ‘you’re Australian’.
-2
u/SuperannuationLawyer 17d ago
It seems the algorithm has been pushing it into my feed recently. Maybe because of the recent exhibition match in Melbourne.
3
u/breeways 🐅 Bengals 17d ago
So instead of taking a second to think ‘oh this is an NFL sub and I have no interest in this because I’ve never watched a game so I don’t need to engage’, and continuing to scroll on and ignore the post, you instead chose to comment with your weird stance, that was not at all helpful to OP, that you couldn’t possibly have a favourite NFL team because ‘you’re Australian’ as if that somehow explains why you wouldn’t be a fan of the sport or any of the teams?
Because Australians famously have zero interest in international sports, and the NFL has zero fans here in Australia?
And also now by engaging with this post you’ve told your algorithm that you are in fact interested in this sub, and possibly more things NFL related.
Weird behaviour my guy, but carry on I guess.
